Title: Two different prices for Wii accessories through Nintendo's store?
Post by: JonLeung on January 16, 2007, 07:06:47 AM
I was looking for the URL for the component cable page on Nintendo's online store to help out a co-worker (who just got a Wii yesterday, and she won't stop raving about it today), and found something odd.

I went to www.nintendo.com, then I went to the store from there manually, selected Canadian prices, and found my way to the component cables.  They're listed as $35.99 (CDN).  However, when I copied the URL and pasted it into another window, it read $29.95 (CDN).  I double-checked, and yes, it does say CDN and not US.  I did the process again just now and it still does the same thing, as long as you're pasting it in another window.  Going through it manually from the American side, I noticed that the American price is $29.95 U.S.

I don't need component cables as I already have them, but I wonder if this is a glitch that might allow a Canadian to get component cables for six dollars less?  I would guess that when you get to the checkout the proper price will be displayed, as I can't imagine Nintendo being so careless and it's probably just a cookie screw-up that shows a different price.

Using Firefox 1.5, this glitch does not occur for me using the steps provided.

However, if I clear the cookies before pasting into the new tab, it does work. So Nintendo stores the currency type in cookies (which defaults to U.S. dollars) but stores the currency name in the URL itself ("currency=CAD").

I highly doubt this could be used to receive a discount. The product database should be referenced for the actual billing, not data provided by the user. This would be a pretty big slip-up on the programmer's part.

Edit: For some more fun, I modified the URL further to produce this. Notice the currency is CAD (but should be USD), the system is NES, and the category is "Xbox 360 > Chips & Dip". So there are a few things that Nintendo derives from the URL itself.
