Title: CES 2007
Post by: MaryJane on January 13, 2007, 12:47:23 PM
Did anyone else catch G4's coverage of this amazing event?

There were a lot of cool things there. The new alienware laptop with 2 Core 2 Duo proccessors (essentially it has 4 processors) that they hope to release for under $2000 makes me glad I waited to before buying my laptop.

The new Verizon/LG phone that has Vcast (live T.V.) only available in NYC for now, but that means it'll leak to part of N.J close enough to the city like Clifton where I live, and even more probable, Jersey City where I work.

So many companies had 100"+ plasma's and LCD's. There was a new kind of HDTV not SED, it was called like Ilia or something(that's not the name but I just remember it sounded close to the character in Zelda, that I'm still trying to save). In one of the final segments, G4 actually had on Matt from IGN and he said he went to a closed door event where a company showed off a plasma HDTV that would poop on SED which is supposed to be the best ever.

A really thin sheet of something that could charge low consumption devices, for travellers so if you go international you wouldn't have to bring a hundred adapters + convertors.

Asimo, the Honda robot has been vastly improved. It can run now, which looks kind of creepy IMO, but the advancement is cool.

There's a laptop that has a small LCD screen on the front (ala a flip cell phone) that provides access to basic functions, like music without using the main battery of the laptop - this IMHO will be the thing we will be seeing most reproduced (along with portable T.V's that use Vcast and other such yet unnanounced services)

There were a lot of cool things there, and you can either go to g4tv or cnet to check out all the cool stuff that will be permeating homes across the country in the upcoming year. IGN also has coverage, but I personally prefer the other two sites I mentioned.

"There was a new kind of HDTV not SED, it was called like Ilia..."

OLED?

"In one of the final segments, G4 actually had on Matt from IGN and he said he went to a closed door event where a company showed off a plasma HDTV that would poop on SED which is supposed to be the best ever."

That would be a new Plasma TV that Pioneer showed off, and if you must know it is really good because it features technological innovation instead of just a software/processor upgrade. Oh and it offers a contrast ratio higher if not equal than SED is capable of.

"Asimo, the Honda robot has been vastly improved. It can run now, which looks kind of creepy IMO, but the advancement is cool."

Watching the vid, from Engadget, was so totally cool, when it ran I just got goosebumps, at least it didn't fall back on the stairs like last time.

I'm dreaming of that supposed 100,000:1 contrast ratio.

Sony had a 27" 1080p LCD-TV with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. That's right, 1 Million: 1.

I'm holding out for that HDTV that has living tissue in it.  It's going to be sick.  I eagerly await the one they'll release in 10 years comprised entirely out of human souls.

Is that anything like how the PS2 can push something like 27 million polygons per frame?

"Asimo, the Honda robot has been vastly improved. It can run now"

Running robots?  I don't want a robot that can catch up to me.  If sci-fi movies have taught us three things they are:

1. Don't enslave apes.
2. Don't clone dinosaurs.
3. Don't give robots the power to take over the world because they'll SO do it.

Running robots counts as this.  I feel robots should have the mobility of an 80 year old.  So they can still get around but they're in bed by 8 and could never hurt anyone effectively regardless of how ornery they get.  They would be dangerous drivers but I think that's a worthy risk for having robots.

The thing is that this is like the number one sci-fi movie warning.  I can assume that a fair bit of people don't have the patience to watch far enough into the Planet of the Ape movies to learn the important lesson hidden within and yet no one suggests enslaving apes.  The crisis has been averted.  But every second sci-fi story of any sort has machines going mad.

Terminator trilogy
Matrix trilogy
I, Robot
Metropolis
2001
Short Circuit

The warning is everywhere but here's Honda giving robots the power to run after us.  FOOLS.

D-ILA, maybe?  That's what JVC calls LCoS.

That is the first time in a long while that one of Ian's posts have made me laugh..

Now imagine in the future somebody builds a harmless but curious robot that reads these books, watches these movies and starts asking us questions on why we hate robots so much.

I think I know why Ian doesn't want the robovolution, it's because the first thing the robot would do to his master (Ian serves as the only example) is kill him, Ian drives the robot insane and therefore the robot has to kill him, no?

Vudu: Living tissue paper?
You said it right 27 million polygons per frame, still frames.

Actually I'm more afraid of robot's becoming intelligent enough that we start having robot rights activists.  So suddenly we're no longer machine owners but machine "companions" and if you mistreat your microwave the government rescues it and charges you with robot abuse.

Lol I'm going to have to agree with you on the robot activists. There would definitely be such people. I, Robot had people like that if I remember correctly, but hey Will Smith saved the world so I'm not worried.

With the way the CPU industry works and how they love their Moore's Law I think that we won't live to see intelligent robots, so you're safe.

Just wanted to post the stats of the laptop I'm going to buy, the only bad thing about this laptop is that I was planning to buy a laptop last weekend for about $1800, HP NX9420(not just because of the 420 in the name ) now I have to wait until March to buy the Alienware m9750 here are the stats:

Industry First: The Area-51 m9750 is the first and only 17” notebook to match dual graphics cards with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processors, delivering maximum performance.
Overclocked Core 2 Duo Processors: A gamer's and multitasker's dream, the Intel Core 2 Duo processors on the Area-51 m5790 have been overclocked to 2.66GHz for faster, smoother performance from startup to shutdown
1GB of Graphics Memory: Dual 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7950 GTX cards combine to give the Area-51 m9750 enough graphics firepower to top the competition.
Huge Hard Drive Capacity: Up to 400GB of storage space on dual hard drives makes storing massive amounts of games, TV programming and other entertainment a breeze.
High-Definition Viewing: Enjoy games in extreme HD resolution and Blu-ray videos with HD video playback.
Widescreen 17” Display: The spacious widescreen LCD delivers pristine imagery with the help of Clearview technology.

The best part? It's going to cost around the same amount as the HP that I wanted to buy!! They're both desktop replacements which I need because well I'm replacing a desktop, and I want the 17" screen for roadtrips which I go on about 10 a year, maybe more if it can be helped. I'm just glad G4 aired it's coverage of CES before I bought the HP, while I likely would have been satisfied the alienware is going to be PIMP! I just wish it had HD-DVD and not Blu-ray, I feel like I'm supporting Sony by having Blu-ray. I suppose I can always swap it for a HD-DVD drive later, or wait until they make a combo drive like LG stand alone player(which I'm getting for my B-day) small enough for laptops.

Edit: Added one more spec I found on the alienware site.

Ew Ew ew ew ewwww... Intel no no! No! No me hates them! I'm an AMD man myself. Hook me up with the 64xF2's

I've got an Athlon 64x2 myself, but in all honesty the Core 2 Duo kicks the crap out of basically anything else out there at the moment.

I like AMD also the desktop I mean to replace is powered by it. However, as knowsnothing stated Core 2 Duo is the best out right now, and this laptop has 2 of them... which essentially is 4 proccessors. 4 CPU's, and 2 GPU's in a 17" laptop I can't resist. Well actually if it was priced much higher I could, but at under $2000 (most likely $1999) it is hard to resist. Plus alienware hardware looks super cool, i'm not aesthetics man, but I like how the individuality of it. When I bring this around my Macbook loving friends who's books all look the same except for slight differences (like screen size) I'll stand out. When I play F.E.A.R on it I'll really stand out!

4 CPUs and all games use only one of them...

well in the case of the core 2 duo, one processor is 2. not only that its better for multi-tasking playing a game like F.E.A.R while simultaneously looking up cheats and creating spreadsheets, or writing contracts. it also will help when I dual-log in asheron's call. I don't play WoW so doesn't really help me there.
