Title: Random thought: I'm dating myself, but...
Post by: Edge on January 05, 2007, 05:02:24 AM
..does anyone here remember the old Infocom games (Zork, Enchanter, etc.) from back in the 80s? I've been playing Phoenix Wright the last two weeks (great game, btw) and it reminds me of the great interactive stories that Zork and other games had. I would absolutely love to see a Zork or Enchanter game in the same style as Phoenix Wright. Comic book animation and a great story: perfect fit for the old Infocom games.

More adventure titles PLZ. Sprung is also a good "text adventure" game for the DS (no really!)
BTW, if you haven't tried Touch Detective, it's like the old Sierra adventure games.

Trace Memory was an excellent DS game. It makes me want more games. Manaic Mansion DS anyone?
Also, the upcoming Hotel Dusk (by those who bought us Trace Memory) looks wonderful.

I only really got into Return To Zork...which was bundled with the first CD-ROM I got, a 2x one! Not even a CD-writer! But an early CD-ROM graphic adventure doesn't compare to text adventures, wow. I grew up on BASIC games, and other similar games, but I didn't ever play the original Zork games when they were relatively new.
Sprung for the DS is more fun that you'd think, it's an "adventure" game, not so much a dating game. Sure, some young people and hormones are involved but it's not a true dating sim. I actually played it through five times (three times as Brett, twice as Becky) to unlock everything (except that the game might be glitched and there's a couple things no one knows how to get, at least last time I checked)!
I thought Touch Detective was annoying near the end, when it was no longer item-based but dependent on dialogue to progress. It got pretty bad. If it was longer with more exciting missions, and maybe a tad more colourful (I mean visually), it could easily be pretty hot.
I must've missed something because Trace Memory wasn't as great as I'd hoped. >_> But I do want to try that Hotel Dusk game or whatever it's called.
Point-And-Click (or rather, "tap") FTW.

"Not even a CD-writer!"
Now I'm dating myself because that doesn't seem odd to me at all. I think it was well into the 21st century by the time I had the hardware to burn my own CDs. When people say "CD burner" I still get the mental image of some expensive hardware that only well off people have, even though I have a DVD burner and they don't even make PCs that can't at least burn CDs. Hell I remember CD-ROM PERIOD being expensive futuristic technology.

I remember when the ability to copy 1 Gig on a Jazz disk was amazing... like, we were in awe at holding one Jazz disk.

We had an external tape drive for backups. :'D Like, futuristic tapes. It was like around the time of ZIP disks and stuff.

I had an internal zip drive back in the day...
The first computer that I bought for myself was back in 1998 (right after windows 98 came out)
Pentium 2 400mhz 128mb RAM (64 was the norm then and the 128 cost me $250) 2 speed CD-RW ($400) 20 gig HD
I don't even remember the rest of the specs but I think it cost me something like $3000
I also bought a 1.2 megapixel Olympus digital camera with an 8mb memory card for $600.

My first computer was an Apple LLe.
My first real computer was a 486 AST. It came with 8 MB RAM, which we upgraded to 40. 8x CD-ROM, 1 GB hard drive. We had one of those fancy tape backup drives put in (internal) No USB ports or anything fancy like that. And it was about $1000, purchased right before Windows 95 came out. Like, one month before you were eligble for a free upgrade. My mother threw a piss fit and got the free upgrade.
Oh, can't forget. 14.4 bps modem. Like, when browsing the internet, we had images disabled just so pages would load in less than a day.

My first real computer was before the internets. DOS and Windows 3.1. Those were the days, boys. Putt Putt Saves the Zoo!

Oh man that brings me back. My good old Pentium 386 and Windows 3.1. I'd love to get that sucker running again and just browse around for awhile. It's been too long.

I started on a Tandy1000 HX. My first real game for the system was Kingdom of Kroz, an ASCII based adventure game. I got it by sending Scott Miller about $5 from an ad in Video Games and Computer Entertainment. He sent me a 3.5 floppy with the demo. This title was one of the first shareware games and Scott Miller is of course now CEO of 3D Realms.

Well I am still a young-un by the standards of many of you people, but my first computer was a gift from my grandparents (after they got a new one). It was an older computer than ran Windows 3.1/DOS. My favorite game was Lemmings. Such a great game, it is a shame there are few good incarnations around these days (DS version please). I played around on that PC for hours and hours. I learned the meaning of "delete" by deleting the "Main" folder.
I am really into computers and so I actually would like to explore older systems. I have a few old ones hanging around, including an Apple IIe that sadly does not have a disk drive. I really need to get one.

The first computer my family had was a Timex. It was a copy of....
Hint- This family of computers was popular in Europe but not so much in the US.

My first computer was a 386 with 8 Megs of RAM. I slaved drove that thing to the edge. Using MS Paint, I pixel by pixel from a B&W hand handled scanner cleaned up and recreated a the Burger king logo for my dads company back in the lower 90's. I still managed to put the copyright R in the wrong place. Plenty of scorched earth was played on that machine.

Zork. Right Here. Apple IIc.
That's really digging into the past there. We also had Lode Runner, Mario Bros., Bard's Tale III, Skyfox, Montezuma's Revenge and a ton of other oldies. Oh, what was that wierd vector shooter called?. . .

Holy crap! And how could I have forgotten Rocky's Boots!!! Oh man that was weird! Also I spaced on Maniac Mansion. . . which was. . . well, kinda creepy. Being rather young I don't think I fully appreciated all the humor in that one.

My first computer was a TRS-80 Model 1. Whopping 4k of ram. My second computer was an IBM PC jr. Love that thing. First game: King's Quest (the original in all it's 16 color glory).

I played a ton of scorched earth back in the day. I still play a game that's very similar to SE called Pocket Tanks. Google it for a demo, you won't be disappointed.

GeoWorks? Which version?
My uncle had an old copy of that. It was interesting for it's time.

I just read "I'm dating myself" and thought, Wow that's a good idea, save me looking for a girlfriend!
Anyway, my first 'computer was a C64, but my first PC was a 386. I remember we could bring up this rotating picture of a clown, we thought it was amazing! It almost looked real!

Wow, Scorched Earth, Zork... text adventure games. I don't think I ever actually beat one of those, but I played quite a few of them. First computer was a 486SX 25mHz, 8MB RAM, running DOS 6.0 (I think). I miss DOS sometimes...
Hey, whatever happened to Commander Keen?
EDIT: The most amazing thing I ever did with that computer was upgrade my 2400 baud modem to a 14.4, and play Doom over the TELEPHONE LINES with fellow-forumer DrewMG. Those are some of my fondest gaming moments right there. To this day, all he has to do is mention the level 4 debacle, and it just all comes back.

I'm just surpised that someone mentioned GeoWorks. Very few people remember that program today.

I remember GeoWorks, I do.
Boy, games were so simple back in the day when DOOM was so revolutionary. I was like, "whoa, a gory game? That involves Hell? And it's in 3D?" My teenage mind couldn't comprehend. And then I was in awe that my 386 could handle it! 0_0
In junior high I doodled in my notes about Wolfenstein 3-D so much that I'm surprised my teachers didn't think I was taking in some neo-Nazi propanda (even though I'm not white, obviously).

My first computer was a Commadore C64 we replaced it with the 128 later on. It had a tape deck drive also and a old giant floppy drives but they didnt hold much data.
We were poor we got it when Windows had already been out for a while.
we had a program called Geos somthing or other, it was kinda sorta like windows in a way but it didnt use a mouse it used a pad instead. Is that the same thing ya'all is talking about? We never had internet till we got our first real pc which was running windows 98 SE and was a total mind blow sicne we had little experience outside of school on real computers only having that old commadore forever.
