Title: Official Izuna thread
Post by: KDR_11k on January 03, 2007, 09:01:08 PM
Since screenshots don't get talkback threads this is now the Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja talk thread.
I'll start with this comment:
I'm sure Bill agrees.
(if you don't look closely at the front page before entering the forums, I'm talking about this)
Play-Asia says it's coming in... you guessed it... FEBRUARY!

What's sad is that I don't even like dungeon crawlers and I'll still end up getting this for the super cuteness and awesome Atlus localization...

I've vowed to quit the random dungeon crawler genre, but I'll be picking this game up anyways for charm alone!

I want this game but seeing that Atlus is doing it I'll have to preorder it or something to avoid getting stiffed on the limited run.

This game sold me for one reason: one of the female characters in the screen shot was saying, "Maybe I should get a personality."
If the humor like that continues throughout, I'll definitely grab it.

At first I thought the one piece of art might be too innocent to be suggestive...
But then I found this...

Is that for real, though? It looks a little different from the rest of the art. (edit: *drool*)
Like Bill, I'm not a dungeon crawling fan, but I may have to check this out just for the girls. And the funny dialogue.

Yeah it's for real. It shows up multiple times on both the Japanese publisher's and developer's websites as well as in an art book, which I'm assuming this SAMPLE is advertising.

should've been indicative of the whole game.

It says "action adventure" on the Play-Asia item description. Is it a roguelike or do enemies move independently of the character?

Pfft, no duh she's unemployed. She's wearing BRIGHT RED. Ninjas are stealthy, wearing bright red != stealthy...

Bright red could be stealthy if you're in a place with lots of bright red stuff... Hiding in plain sight! It's innovative!

She doesn't need stealth for the jobs I'll give her.

Ninjas didn't wear anything that would identify them as ninjas, the kunai is popular because it's a gardening tool and as such would not be very suspicious during a search. These days ninjas would probably wear a suit and a silenced Walther PPK (or various movie-inspired equipment in the case of a Russian one, the Soviets thought US spies had all of those Bond gadgets so they wanted to keep up with that technology). Female ninjas usually assumed the jobs of prostitutes (although the existence of female ninjas is disputed, "kunoichi" are probably the creation of fiction writers).
Izuna is a fiction ninja with all that magic stuff so she could probably bust in through the front door and annihilate an entire army. If I had people of such power I'd probably not dress them in stealthy garb, I'd make them visible from far away so my enemy would panic long before the actual slaughter begins.

Good thing I waited, was about to import it at one time thinking it would never be released here.

I'd never try importing an RPG.

Yeah, more peachy-pink-coloured.
I saw a couple of videos of this game...meh. Random dungeon design isn't my thing, as much as I like the characters, with my limited handheld gaming time my money could be better spent.

I'd have said covered in whiteish goo.
I wonder what the gameplay is like, I can withstand faults in games as long as the humour (or interesting stuff) keeps coming but if it's 2+ hours of grinding between interesting events I'd probably get bored (okay, we're assuming the worst for the gameplay here...).

I don't have the money to pick this up, considering I still need to pick up WiiPlay and Sonic...The impressions will help me decide whether it's worth it or not! (Go go low Atlus shipments...)

It's an Atlus game. You don't have the luxury to wait for reviews... which is why I have it!

Ah Izuna. This is one game where it's hard for me to give non-biased impressions. I like a good challenge. Ikaruga, Viewtiful Joe, and TRauma Center are some of my favorite games. All three, of course, have one thing in common...they are NOT easy but with the right amount of play (And in VJ's case, style) it can become easier to manage. That's how I feel about Izuna as of my 3 hours with the game.
SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO GO IN COMPLETELY UNTOUCHED!
I've cleared 2 dungeons (They are most definitely revisitable) and what I've discovered so far is that item management is your bes tfriend in the world! Deciding what to keep on hand and what to ditch as you travel further and further down is most vital when you do not have the right item needed to return to town. It is a pain in the ass when your weaponry breaks on you...particulary the Cat Claws but that has way more to do with certain Izuna thoughts than gameplay ;x
The game is difficult. There's a catch though. The game is, to an extent, only as hard as you make it. You can run around to regain health or use your, pretty damn limited early on, healing items to take some of the sting away. Moving to heal has a bit of a drawback though...the enemies move in time with you. When you move, so do they. You can, however, thankfully see them on your map if they're getting too close and you need to change your tactic.
Thinking of that lovely map, I love the always seeable map! Damn thing's a godsend. The map will show you where you have been on the floor you're on, enemies (Which appaear as red dots), items (Appearing as blue dots), and the stairs which take you to the next levle down (Shown as a little triangle). The same screen (Top screen) is also used to show your health, spirit energy, and a few other btis of info I've forgotten ;x
Be warned, when you enter a dungeon you are stuck in there until you either reach a point wher eyou are returned to town or you have a town warp talisman. The dungeons are randomly generated (Which I confirmed to be pretty damn random through a few deaths heh...I admit it ;x) and are fairly large in size. It is possible to clear all the enemies on a single floor so before you go to the next floor you can run around and regain your health.
Combat's pretty straightfoward. It's turn based in essence, though you'll think it's realtime when it isn't (Though it just may be...but I always get to decide what to do once I'm fighting so I will say turn bsed with a real time feel to it). Items playing anice role in your combat as your weaponry is far and few between.
On the whole I am enjoying my time with Izuna so far, quite a bit actually. It's fairly quick paced, a challenge, but most importantly, it's just fun...even if I'm not a 100% sure why it is it just is!I say if you're into the whole dungeon crawling scene and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon was a letdown? Go for it. But again be warned...pansies need not apply to this game. Do not be afraid to die over, and over, and over again depending on your gaming skill level/how much you are into grinding. On that note I should mention that if you take the time? You can damn near become an overpowered freak. (Not unlike another Atlus published handheld title I recently discovered after wondering about it isnce its release...Summon Knight: Swordcraft Story.....damn I love Atlus) So there you have it. If you want me to go into more detail on something just ask and I hope that these impressions were competent enough to understand heh ;o

Hard RPGs scare me, so I may have to think about this for a while...*shakes fist at near-empty wallet*

A review on an RPG-centric site called the difficulty easy but punishing, i.e. the parts that you have control over are easy to deal with but there are lots of random things that can screw you over, e.g. traps that have a tendency to destroy your escape-from-dungeon items so you can't get away when you get pounded by enemies and getting pounded by enemies makes you lose all items you carry with the game saving in specific moments to prevent you from undoing that loss (turning off during a dungeon will make the game assume you died and you can only save in those load-once saves and only when you go through a staircase).
