Title: Wii forces Gamecube games to play in 60hz problem
Post by: kiniki on January 01, 2007, 08:20:35 PM
Hi all
I am new here and fairly new to the whole Wii experience.
I have a Pal Wii and I'm based in the uk.
I have been trying to play my gamecube games on the Wii, however everytime I try to run a game the Wii changes from 60hz to 50hz and I can't stop it from happening. Someone told me that by holding down the B button on the GC controller it will change it back, but I have had no luck with this at all.
Can anyone tell me whether this is a bug that needs to be fixed by Nintendo, or if anyone can confirm the correct way to switch back to 50hz whilst in Gamecube mode?
Thank you

Gamecube games aren't required to support 60Hz so some don't use it. The Wii can't force them to go 60Hz since that would break the game. If holding B at startup doesn't do anything (though I think the Wii automatically does that for you) the game doesn't support 60 Hz mode.

That's really weird.
I am playing Metroid Prime 2. I start the game, and the screen jumps up about two inches. When I reset the Wii, it still has the 2 inch gap, to remove it I have to go into settings and change the screen option from 60hz back to 50hz.
It was set at 50hz originally.
I will check that some of the other games don't do this... But if Prime 2 does support it then something is going wrong!

Metroid Prime 2 doesnt support 50hz, the PAL version even states it on the box

Ah!
That will be my problem then!!! Couldn't see the wood through all the trees..
Doh!
Now all I need to do is lobby Nintendo so that they get the GC Freeloader working on the Wii and everything will be rosy again!

Yeah 50hz is slowly being phased out, there's a few GC games I recall that don't support it and are 60hz only, including the Zelda Bonus Discs.

That may create a slight problem for me as I only have 1 tv in my house that supports 60hz... Looks like I may have to go shopping in the near future!

I may shop for a new TV this summer cuz my 10-yr old 27-inch CRT TV is EFFING HEAVY.
The convenience of a more portable and less back-breaking tv set is what attracts me. Progressive scan from a modern set is a nice bonus.
