Title: Dear Canadaianites
Post by: UncleBob on December 28, 2006, 01:38:43 PM
I know we have more than one person from the great fridgid north on here, so I wanted to share my discovery today... however, before I do, I wanted to ask...

Do y'all have those quarter pushers up there?  They're machines that are found in arcades and gas stations a lot that you drop a quarter in and the machine does its thing and possibly pushes quarters out....

Oh yes, we do have those.

I saw Wiimotes in Zellers today (4!) but decided against getting a second one.

Cool!  I have an awesome money making plan for you!

I noticed today that your quarters are magnetic!

So get a really strong magnet, go up to one of these machines and *bam*, you're rich!

Quarter pushers, huh? Do you mean those machines that you can find at laundries where you can make change out of bills?

The dime, nickel, and toonie (outer ring) are magnetized. I don't have any loonie at the moment so I can't say that it is magnetized.

Eh? You drop a quarter in and it pushes quarters out? Do you mean you put a loonie (dollar coin) in and it pushes quarters out? Yeah, we have those.. But how exactly would you get the quarters with a magnet, if they are contained inside?

UncleBob's talking about coin-pushers.  You often find them in arcades.

There's a flat surface with a bunch of coins (generally quarters, but other coins/tokens also work) laying flat on it.  There's a mechanical "wall" in the back that moves back and forth (about to the halfway point of the surface).  As this wall moves forward it pushes any quarters that no longer fit on the surface into a gap on the other side; any that fall down are won by the player.  The player's job is to launch coins via a movable ramp so they land in spots that will cause coins to fall when the wall readjusts them.  Fortunately for arcade owners the coins can shift so a ridiculous number of them can fit on the surface at any one time.  Even when it looks like no additional coins could possibly fit on there they somehow manage to shift and hold dozens more.

Also, on the sides of the insides of these machines is a "bank" - it's where coins fall off into the side, but the player doesn't win them.  It's how the machines make money... and they make tons of it.

But it seems to me that if you had a strong enough magnet, you could even the odds a little.

vudu, thanks for telling us what it was.

UncleBob, even if we could have access to a strong magnet don't you think the security (camera or human) wouldn't notice?

Strong enough magnet and the security camera wouldn't be a problem... (Or any other electronic item for that matter... Or credit card...)

Today, in the interest of verbal efficiency, we decided that Asian people who live in Canada will be referred to as "Canasians".

Just as white New Hampshirites will be shortened to "New Hampshirewhites".

There are really stong magnets that can be ordered over the internet... I dunno if they're strong enough, though.

As far as security... Well, that's for you to figure out!

Why not just take a hammer to the glass casing?  If you're going to steal you might as well go all out.

EDIT:  Better yet, get a gun and rob the damn arcade.

My idea doesn't involve vandalism or armed robbery...

Nope, just plain robbery.

Did anyone ever get to try this for me?

I'm thinking you could make a big ol' Belt Buckle from the super-magnet...

Sorry, we're all too nice to do something like that.

You could try it, see if it works, then throw the money back into the machine.

So is Unclebob planning a trip to Canada or something is that why he is so interested to know if this works or not?

This has no relevance, but Tesco > Wal Mart.

I don't know what a Tesco is, but I hate Wal-Mart anyways.
