Title: Wii already has 1/3 of 360 sales! Snowball to stay frozen in hell?!
Post by: Requiem on December 27, 2006, 08:55:17 AM
Don't know how reputable this site is (though from a quick look around, looks legit), but they show (with perdy graphs) that the Wii already has 3 million sold! That's crazy!

well we have to remember, to Sony a Sold unit is just a unit that has been sold to the Store. Depending on where they are getting their sale numbers they could just be getting the number of units for the PSP and PS3 that have been "Shipped" and sold to the store and not actual units that have been sold to actual people.

I don't know, Microsoft was so confident it would sell 10 million by the end of the year (even going as far as to suggest it might exceed 10 million) that I have to question VGCharts' 360 numbers.
Still, Nintendo has had a really good launch.

Next Gen Wars has the 360 with more but that number is still below 10 million. So I don't. We will definatly get better number in April when the companies release their financials for this year. But I'm expecting an offical announcement on how well Sony and Nintendo did over the shopping season from their respective companies sometime soon (as in about a month).

I think VG charts is wrong. Xbox360 is closer to 9 million, at least according to other sources.

I trust the 7 million thereabouts number for the X360. In America, the Xbox 360 sold only 500k units in November, and has been consistently outsold all year long by the PS2. According to NPD numbers up to Novermber 2006 reported here, the X360 only has about 3.7 million units sold in the U.S. If you multiply that by a factor of 1.1 to account for Canada and the rest of the Americas, the X360 has only moved about 4.07 million units in America. Japan is practically nothing with maybe 190k lifetime sales there, and with the X360 reportedly quite lukewarm in Europe, estimates range at about 2 - 2.5 million in sales there. All that together means we can weather a guess at 7 million X360's sold worldwide QUITE easily.
NPD numbers discourage any higher estimates in the North American Market, and the numbers are very clear about Japan. Europe has no such independent reliable and public tracking service, but all indications point that the X360 Is not exactly gangbusters over there, definitely not enough to account for 2 million "phantom" units that MS needs to make its magical 10 million number.
... which they're gonna say they did by giving us shipping numbers instead anyways.

Don't get me wrong, I like the VGCharts numbers a lot better, I just don't know if they're very accurate. I've seen numbers from Microsoft that were higher than this, of course they could be using shipped instead of sold.

BINGO. MS uses shipped instead of sold, just like Sony.
Also, the numbers on VG charts for the US market are straight from NPD, the closest thing we have to a sales tracking group in America. They're not perfect (they don't track Walmart but are forced to guesstimate them), but they're our best guesses. They also don't cover Canada and the rest of the Americas.

Does this chart account for December North American sales? If so, all the consoles would be boosted.
Yeah, those 360 numbers are quite accurate - it may be a bit over 8 million at most.. The PSP numbers seem inflated; even the Japan ones seem too high. The Wii sales look about right - Nintendo missed their target by about a million, if this holds true.
On another note, New Super Mario Bros is at nearly 8 million worldwide, and Nintendogs is at 10 million! Amazing.

All things considered, the 360 has actually done pretty poorly, what with being the first next gen system to market with a year-long head start.
I'm curious to see when Wii demand will taper off. It's looks like the Medacast predictions of the Wii being impossible to find for the rest of the year are indeed correct and could likely carry over into the next year as well.

I found 4 at Wal-mart but they sold out in under 20 minutes.
For anyone with a 9-5 job, this still classifies as "impossible" since all these shipments come in around noon.

Well for now they are going to be "easier" to find then in December. But I don't expect them to be in great quanity when found but they will stay on the shelf a little longer. I just finshed reading an article on the New York Times where he didn't want to get one until he played it then he couldn't find them. His last few sentences were that he hated Nintendo and the guy how showed him the console. (The games editor) There was another writter for them that had to get a police escort out of Target because she recieved the last one in the store.

That's true throughout.
My GF didn't want one until she tried Wii sports, and I've showed it to coworkers at the xmas party who seemed genuinely interested in it.
The Wii has the viral effect going for it, even more so than the DS ever did.

Well that's because Nintendo knew what type of game to have with the Wii this time because of what they went through with the DS.

Indeed they did.

360 numbers would be much much stronger if the 360 wasn't prone to breaking early on.

wasn't sure were to post this, but G4TV reported the Wii sold upwards of 3.5 million systems worldwide with about half in the US
not sure about the half in the US sounding right, considering Nintendo said 1 million in the US by the end of the year

Half sounds about correct, Nintendo has sold less then 1 million in Japan (.82 million) and I'm guessing a little over a .5 million elsewhere. So I guess they will hit their target for 2 million Wii this year in the US.

microsoft must be cringing as the Wii closes the gap in next gen sales a bit further each day, slowed only by the fact that Nintendo seems happier making DSLites than Wiis.

If Wii units are slow to come around, do the next best thing and promote the games to help increase that tie-in ratio.

Well, I bet Nintendo makes more money per DS sold, in comparison to the money they get everytime they sell a Wii. Plus, there are far more AAA games on the DS assuring Nintendo's pocket becomes even fatter. Basically.....they don't have to put much effort into making money at all.
However, ignoring the Wii would be a disaster, but then again....they wanted to have 4 million out by the year's end, and they have sold 3.17 mil. I think by years end they'll have 3.5 million around the globe, which puts them ahead of schedule to sell 6 mil for the fiscal year.

They better get the lead out and make or BEAT that figure, as far as I'm concerned.
Enough Wii searching will eventually piss people off to the point where they eventually forget about buying one (it happens).

Not neccessarily....
If you don't want a Wii, I'm sure someone will take your place. For instance, just today my brother said to me "Yo...Christmas is over.....let's get a Wii." Whether we find one or not, it doesn't matter because Wii is as viral a system as one can be, and once more games come forth it will renew interest.

I'm not underestimating its viral power as I've personally witnessed it well over 10 times already, but I do think the window won't stay open indefinitely.
But early Feb should be the latest for Nintendo to get piles of systems into stores. The problem with the Wii (and every company wishes they had problems like this) is that every Wii sold practically guarantees another Wii sold, possibly more.
I mean, when does the average chain of friends end? Usually, they don't. You'll always know at least one more person who will see the Wii, want one, and then show theirs to a different set of friends/relatives and the chain continues.

Let's not be blinded with optimism. Sure the PS3 has had a tough time entering into the market, but hindsight's a bitch. I seem to remember the PSP launching terrible as well, but it is still sellling (slowly, but steadily).

I doubt that. If they drop the price, I see it being able to do well versus the 360. The question is when and by how much the price would drop, though. If Sony gets desperate, I could see them cutting the price pretty quickly, much like they did with the PS1 which eventually led to it overcoming the Saturn and N64. However, Sony will be bleeding money to do so, considering how much they already lose on the system, and there is little to stop Microsoft from cutting the 360 price even lower to counteract it.

At which point Nintendo will simultanieously drop the price to $220 (with Wiisports included), and announce the itunes channel; thus, successfully pressing the "WIN" button.

if sales of 360 don't go up any, you can probley count on a price drop annouced at E3, to compete with nintendo Wii if it continues to do well
on the other hand, sony would just be cutting their throuts even more if they cut the price, and as long as sony doesn't lower the price, 360 has no reason to lower theirs

I think it would be the nail on the coffin for Sony if Microsoft lowered their price any time soon. Heck maybe even for Nintendo...but not so much.

I agree... If the XBox 360 continues to track under or around original XBox numbers, then Microsoft will be tempted to do this.
..UNLESS they're happy with a niche market. But they'll probably do it anyways just to throw stick it to Sony.

They are advertising the 360 to a niche market though. The features that are pushed the most are xbox live and HD (there are still many people without internet/broadband.) These are both features that not everyone is capable of using and should not be pushed as the primary reason for purchase. They seem to want mainly the most hardcore gamers because of this and the types of games available. If you don't have online (or don't want to pay) or don't have an hdtv (or don't care about hd resolution) the xbox isn't very tempting especially when the features are advertised as almost necessary.
The Wii's big selling point is something everyone who gets the system can use, just like it should be.

But wasn't it Peter Moore who said he wanted to sell a hundred million 360s (or some ridiculous figure like that)? That's not exactly a niche figure.
