Title: Always connected.... my ass maybe...
Post by: therat on December 21, 2006, 04:42:01 AM
Wiiconnect24, always connected, wifi inside, get updates automatically.

ok, heres the kicker... the system is never always connected to the internet.

it has to reconnect after you change channels.

this is why it takes 3 minutes to load the forecast channel or the shopping channel. (it first connects to the hotspot then to the service)

i doubt that the forecast channle effects gameplay, i dont know where this rumor started, but it wasnt from big N and none of the games are connected to the net now anyways.

when games finally come out for this "always connected" system, its going to take 3 minutes to actually connect first.

i am NOT happy what they have been doing with the net service. i thought it would always be on, id always know who else was on, id always know who else was playing, id be able to flip through all the net services as fast as it would take to load and not connect first.

im not happy i cant see who my friends friends are, making a REAL community, right now its like "Oh, we are all connected, but you are confined to your own cell and have no options to leave it"

Unless N updates their system to be actually always connected (which i know they wont, i think the japanes are scared to hook people up for some reason, i dont get it, is it an american christian influance...??? ) their net service sucks ass, and can never compete with xbox360 or prolly even ps3... def not compete with the pc. (think the pc makes me realize what they can do, but wont).

ok, thats my pissed off rant, time to play more wii now!

(I'm not sure what Christianity has to do with being scared to be online...)

Anyway, I don't think WiiConnect24 is literally 24 hours, and even if it was, it's not "WiiConnect86400" (as in, not connected every second).  At least it isn't for me.  Is it just me?  I have a spotty connection with my Ninendo Wi-Fi Connector from my computer in the other room with ZoneAlarm always getting in the way.  Or maybe it's not constantly connected because there are no games or services (yet) that absolutely need near-constant, live, real-time data transfer.  That could change as new Wii games or new Wii Channels and features are added.

I plan to figure out some way to get a wired connection in the new year when the official USB LAN adapter things are available.  (I assume that will be more reliable, and also then I won't need the computer to be on every time I want to go online with the Wii.  Problem is figuring out how to get the phone line all the way from the computer room to the living room without it being in the way.)  Then I'll be ready for WiiConnect24 when its potential is more tapped.

right now its basically like using a cell phone text messaging service, in the future maybe it will be different. I remember Nintendo made all these deals with gamespy and AOL whTF did those go?

I noticed this when I connected via the Nintendo USB wireless adapter. Every 5 minutes or so, the tool gave me a small notification bubble in my system tray that a user had connected... that user being my Wii!

The system seems to always be connected for me. I have friends who tell me that they sent a picture or a email to my Wii account and when I walk into the other room, guess what the Wii is glowing that nice neon blue.

I think why it takes a min for Forecast Channel or the Shopping Channel to boot up is not that its connecting to the internet but becuase its 1. Booting up Opera and 2. Loading the web page.

Give Nintendo some time, Even MS didn't get their Online servies out the door untill 1 Year after the Xbox was released and even that it was pretty close to the same level as Nintendo is right now. It took MS 5 years to make XboxLive the way it is now on the Xbox360.

The gripe I have with WC24 is that leaving the "standby" connection turned on, the Wii is always running on the hot side of warm. Up until the Forecast Channel became available, I had the standby connection turned-off. I honestly don't care if I a message or not waiting for me. I figured being connected while my Wii is turned on, should be enough. The Forecast Channel actually requires that the WC24's standby settings to be "On" otherwise, it will not connect.

Anyways - a quick check of my router's setting, shows that the Wii is, in fact, always connected.

whenever I leave my Wii in standby, it messes up the whole house's wireless connection for some reason.  So I have to turn it off all the way if it's gonna be off for more than an hour or two.

I had the same problem when I used to leave torrents downloading overnight.  The wireless network would just quit.

I know it's not a Wii problem, but does anyone know why nothing on my network can stay connected?

Try updating your wireless router to the latest firmware you can find for it on the company's website.

Thing is, when Animal Crossing comes out (or any online game PLAYED online), that kind of live updating will HAVE to happen in order for players to connect to each other.
