Title: Tell me what I can do with a DS...
Post by: ryancoke on December 20, 2006, 08:44:10 AM
I am thinking about purchasing a DS. I have looked at many websites and I have no question that there are some great games out there for it.  However, I am wondering what else I can do with a DS besides games. I know there is a browser coming out soon for it.  Does anybody know of any other non-game type applications for the DS?  Any good hacks out there?

I suppose you could use it as a hat if you have a very tiny head...

Lots of homebrew.

You can't make beer with your DS, that's crazy talk.

You could turn it into an MP3 player but keep in mind it's not a PSP, it's meant for games.

No.

But it should be noted you'll need to invest in additional equipment (a PassMe and a GBA flash cart) in order to said homebrew.

Out of the box the DS does one thing: plays games.  Everything else is done through add-ons.

Aren't there CF or SD based solutions for getting the homebrew data into your DS?

There is a Flash Me cart that supports SD cards, it can play MP3 & homebrew games (among other things that shall go unmentioned )

Thanks guys that's great.  It's weird but since i got the wii and from all the stuff i've read about the PS3 I kinda expect consoles to do more than just play games.  Games are my primary focus but wouldn't it be cool to have things like a Mii channel on the DS?

I have an additional question:

I've noticed in pics i've seen of the DS that the headphone jack looks a little weird. It has the circular jack and then something right next to it.  Do I have to use proprietary headphones or will regular h-phones work?

I think the thing next to the jack is a microphone connector but I have no idea what headset(s) actually use it.

The DS can also play games online. But there arent very many worth playing online yet so that might not satisfy you. Or at least it hasn't me anyways.

I picked up a DS (last one in the store that wasn't pink!) yesterday with Metroid Prime: Hunters.  I got my wireless connection set up but I haven't played it online yet.  It's a pretty sweet game I must say!

Oh be prepared to be very very pWn3d! Playing that game online for the first several times is brutal. . . or at least it was for me.

Just see if you can get a grip on the multiplayer maps before you go online. The competition is nasty out there.

The DS also prints money if you have the proper DS printer accessory.

You were 100% right on that. I got so owned when I tried it online  Good thing online really isn't my thing so I'll pretty much be sticking to single player mode.  Is it just me or does anybody else's hands ache when they play Metroid Prime Hunters?  Especially in a heated boss battle. I have to pause the game several times because my left hand aches so bad.
