So, how about us North Americans?

$5 is right on the money for something we can do for free on any computer.
If only the virtual console followed suit, heh...

Wonder why we have a weather channel when, with Opera, we can check the weather with the service of our choice? Seems a bit redundant.

Even more redundant will probably be the News Channel (I mean, geez, you could just go to CNN.com in the Wii browser) but it's all about the convenience and instant accessibility. Plus, the Forecast Channel and the News Channel are probably better formatted as they're specifically designed for the Wii so they will be easier to read and also to navigate with the Wii Remote.

I heard they were releasing "line rider" for the wii. Does anybody else think it's stupid to sell a flash game that anybody can play for free on the internet channel? Ditto for the DS

I`m typing this post from it, it seems to load really quick, typing takes a while but its neat how it gives you suggestions to finish off the word that you can click on, and reading stuff requires zooming in and scrolling around. Scrolling is slow. Heh im already heaps quicker at typing with this. About to try and watch a youtube vid.
EDIT: Sweet, back on my PC now while a youtube vid is running on my TV, works great. Sound is perfect and the picture is very slightly blurrier because the zoom isn't quite right.

Whingers, this is a top browser. Sure it doesn't have tabs and it's a little blurry but it's by far the best tv internet I've ever seen.
Also, as I'm sure you're dying to know. Typing speed compares to predictive SMS.

Oh ok. HIDDEN BUTTON THEY DIDN'T MENTION. Pressing 1 resizes everything on screen for you and makes it only scroll vertically. It's really really good.
Title: RE: Opera Browser for Wii launches Dec 22nd....
Post by: KDR_11k on December 21, 2006, 08:38:31 PM
Pressing 1 makes it show the bookmarks for me. 2 sets the browser to mobile device mode.
After trying it I stay with my oppinion that there's a reason Microsoft's attempts at WebTV failed and that's TV resolutions. 640x480 isn't enough for anything these days. You'd need HD just to be able to see crap and even then you have to sit very close. MS has the only current-gen console without a web browser. Now you know the reason.
For some reason the scrollbars on the NoE website work in the Wii Opera but not the PC Opera. I have no idea what messed up coding they used for that...

Ok as a beta this is a solid offering. Their are a few things I like "fixed."
Scrolling with B is cool and all but I kept finding myself reaching for the d-pad to scroll. Password fields shouldn't show up in readable form when typing them in. Should be multiple levels of zoom. Both way. A way to bring up an address bar without going back to the start page. Be able to go to different views like desktop. (Its in the mobile column layout.) Tabs. Mouse Gestures. (They just make sense.) Copy paste be a nice plus. Also a Wii page compatible certification program. (Like what w3c has for html and like.)
If they implemented all that I plop down 5 dollars easy.
Also after typing this I sort of wish the keyboard had a transparent background, their was a button on the Wiimote for space and one for shift. That would greatly speed up my typing. Might as well put this out there too. Optional Letter/word announcement from the Wiimote and rumble level control. I find I would like to have about half the intensity of

Post by: Ceric on December 22, 2006, 03:04:29 AM
rumble. Also as, I found out typing this, getting rid of the character limit. I'm all for that. Also special symbol support and alt ctrl del.

I am quite impressed obviously, things need to be fixed for easier use...but as it is, this is very solid.
ceric I disagree about password text being starred. The Wii isn't a keyboard which means it would be very hard to know you typed the right passwords using the Wiimote if everything was starred. This was something I thought the Wii browser did right.

I have to disagree. PDA's do the star thing like everything else and in all actuality it really isn't much different then typing it out. In fact I find it easier. Though think about this scenario. You want to show some people something on an account you have but you need to login. If your like most people you probably have a common password you use for ease of use. People now this because they themselves are the same way. So what are you going to do? Have everyone turn around why you login?
I personally would like it there by default being somewhat security oriented but I wouldn't mind it just to be a check box for if you wanted it or not. I'm all for choice.

My two cents on the Internet Channel Trial Version: It's pretty good as it is, although it obviously has much room for improvement. For instance, I'd really like to see USB keyboard support added in the final version, which is evidently due for release the last week of March, 2007.

Not that I know of but that does bring up a problem does the browser use system memory to cache or does it use the free blocks on the system to do so.

I must have the worlds greatest Wii (ha,ha, get out of your system people) because I have never had any of the problems described by people occur on it. You Tube worked fine all day yesterday and I have yet to have my Wii freeze up on a site. I chalked it up to robust Nintendo brand product now I'm thinking extremely good luck from the Wii gods themselves. Anyway, my wife and I watched a ton of videos but what I cant wait for is the ability to download game saves Dreamcast style once again. That was one of the coolest functions of the DC on-line.

I think almost all of the features that should be added for March have already been listed... but I would add a find/search function, as well as remembering more back/forward pages (I think 5 is the max?)
I also managed to freeze the Wii earlier just going back/forward between 2 sites. Had to pull the plug to get it to reset...

They should never have a "final" version. Maybe something like a 1.0-type version (a satisfactory version) should be due in Spring next year or whatever but they should always consider possible updates. Security fixes, support for other things like different types of streaming media, etc. I don't expect that Nintendo should give up on it, especially if it turns out to be a popular feature.

I'm going to test something, so bare with me.
According to GoNintendo, this site should allow tabbed browsing on the Wii Internet Channel.
I'm gonna go see.
EDIT: Okay. It does work, but it's a little wonky. Anything that is target=_blank wipes out the tabs. To get it to launch you have to register (blek) and then click on the link that reads "basic" from their link under the Wii category called "tabbed browsing."
It also adds a Google search bar and a scroll bar.
