Title: Metal Slug Anthology is OUT !!!
Post by: Martin Q. Blank on December 14, 2006, 06:22:19 AM
I went looking for an extra nunchuk and saw the game available at my local Walmart.  I would've purchased it but have it on reserve at GameStop.

Some of you may be disappointed though because word around the net is that it doesn't support the Classic Controller.  But 7 games at $40 is still a great value.

This game is worth 40 just for the all new Metal Slug 6, but since they're so nice, the game also includes 1-5 as well. GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunate news folks, apparently MSA is already showing some holes on the Wii.

First up: NO CLASSIC CONTROLLER SUPPORT
On Gamecube pads, D-pads dont work
Weird compression issues on Metal Slug 6
Bosses dont flash to indicate their weakpoint hit for massive damage (Sorry)
While all the control methods work for all games, using the Wii remote for MS6 that originally used 5 buttons forces players to use "Shift" buttons to operate. (B+Up+1) etc.

I did read there are trade offs for each of the control options. I may be getting this but I just went to Gamestop to pick up Elebits and Super Swing Golf today and found out that when I told them I wanted to pay for everything at the end of October, I paid for everything except Super Swing Golf which I only had $5.00 down on still so I had to pick it up latter.

No classic controller support?  WTF?  Not cool.  May not buy the game now ;___;

The lack of classic controller support is completely unacceptable for a collection of classic games like this.  Do the people who make decisions like that actually PLAY the finished product?  If they did they probably would notice how stupid a decision like that is.  That alone to me makes this a not-buy.  I'm fed up with half-assed retro collections done by people who are either too lazy or ignorant to do it right.

Can you imagine if this kind of stuff happened with DVDs of old movies as often as it happens with re-releases of old games?  The music and movie industries usually don't half-ass updating their old stuff to a new format so why does seemingly every game publisher in existence not seem to care at all about the quality of their re-releases?  Why in the game industry is cutting corners considered acceptable?

Because games require a bigger budget and there aren't enough of us that bitches about these things. Well atleast the gamecube controller works minus the Dpad which is sort of stupid.

Classic controller support would have made this an instant-buy for me. Now I am going to wait to hear opinions on the various control schemes. Some seem like g!mmicks ("Nunchuck Only"), but I hope there are some rock-solid options in there too. I can not believe the D-Pad does not work on the GameCube controller.

The fact that there are six control options in this game shows that the developer (SNK, I assume) was experimenting with the controls. We can find the same idea in games like Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz. Experimentation is fine on such a new system (we saw the same thing on the DS), but until they are able to come up with decent control schemes for the Wii, I think classic control options are a must. I can't speak for Metal Slug Anthology, but Super Monkey Ball was definitely hurt by poor controls.

Wow, you truly can't please people...I mean, SNK went above and beyond the call of duty by including all the classic metal slug games, including the latest games, and created more than 6 unique control schemes, including Gamecube controller support, and now that the Classic controller is not supported, the game is not worth it anymore?

Yeah, I know, eh?

I mean, geez, yes, you'd think it would support the Classic Controller or use the D-pad on the GameCube controller, but apparently they screwed up.  So?

Are ALL of the remaining control options that are left so unplayable that all of the sudden this compilation is crap?

I love Metal Slug but I haven't gotten to this compilation yet.  And even if I didn't love Metal Slug I would probably raise the same point.

It doens't matter how much effort you put in or how great your intentions are if you f*ck up.  The fact that they screwed this up is more frustrating because they did so much else right.  This looked like such a well made collection at first.  But controls are incredibly important and despite having six options the most ideal control scheme wasn't included.  I figure with the Cube controller the controls will work okay but you're still compromising when you shouldn't have to.

Wait... Isn't Metal Slug an Arcade Series first and foremost?  Wouldn't that mean you where using an arcade stick which closest equivalent is an analog stick.  I'm just saying...

SHUT UP!!!!

Please everybody.

This is insane.

Here is a thought.  Metal Slug was developed to use the cool features of the Wiimote in the classic games.  Then they added Gamecube control support for those that don't want it.  Perhaps the reason you can't use the D-Pad with the Cube controller is it plays fine without it.

I am tired of pointless complaining about the virtual console about not supporting this or that.  Its just a waste of time and energy.

(And I know the irony of this post)

Anyway, the game has 7 complete classic games.  It has 6 control methods.  Some of them may be gimmicky, but they were having fun developing them...let them.  If all of a sudden no classic controller support (which saves you money in the end) means you won't buy the game.  Then don't buy it, and don't complain.

They did f*ck up.  They choose not to include an option...after giving us several other options.

While the concerns of the controls in MS are understandable, what I mean is that SNK DID include more than one controller option, GC included. What I mean is that its best to try all the control types before knocking the game down. It would've been EVEN WORSE of a f*ck up if SNK forced us to use just one type of control motion without the option of changing them.

This seems like more of a retro fanboy argument that a valid concern, since everyone wanted to play with the D-pad.

Oh, ho!  That's true!

I don't get why people don't rent games for the majority of their gaming time like I do.  You're not going to be as disappointed if you paid $8.99 (Canadian, Blockbuster, no coupons) and then get bored of the game in less than a week and return it - than if you paid full price.

If you do want to OWN the definitive Metal Slug collection because you're just that much of a fan, okay, yeah, you have reason to be a little miffed that particular control schemes may not be available.  But I seriously doubt that the options that are there are unusable.

Maybe there'll be a (likely third-party) joystick controller where you could map buttons.  Heck, couldn't you use an X-Arcade joystick through the GameCube ports?  You already have some options, it's not the end of the world, sheesh.

I just noticed NWR took out the PGC forum tagline (Where PGC readers go to bitch about EVERYTHING).

Make a new one. It's just not the same without it.

I don't want people to think that I am writing off the game because of the lack of Classic Controller support. I am just saying that having it there would be a sort of safety net in case the other schemes don't work well.

I love the Wii to death, but I realize that it is new technology for most game developers and so the control will not be perfect. Knowing this, I see no problem with being skeptical of launch-window game controls. I am sure this will be a great compilation (and I will probably buy it), but having a traditional option with D-pad support would have comforting for me.

I've unlocked everything except the Tonko Gallery, and the Special Music.
I have no clue whatsoever on how to unlock those last 2 items, if anyone has them unlocked please do reply with the solution.
