Title: Nintendo DS games of the holidays
Post by: NWR_pap64 on December 13, 2006, 07:55:15 AM
Since its very likely I won't get a Wii this year, and SB is lending me his copy of Elite Beat Agents, what DS games do you recommend me getting for the Holidays?

Just so you know, I already have New Super Mario Bros. I asked for Starfox Command, is that one any good?

Here are the DS games I already have:
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
New Super Mario Bros.
Feel the magic
Super Mario 64 DS
Mario Kart DS
Mario and Luigi Partners in time
Electroplankton
Metroid prime pinball
Animal crossing Wild world
Nintendogs Lab version
Nintendogs Chihuahua version
Wario ware touched

You need to BUY your own copy of EBA. This game deserves more than a try-out.../cry

And besides, you're making Reggie mad. He wanted 300,000 sales, and so far it's only done 120,000. You don't want Reggie to be mad do you?

Also, don't forget to peruse GBA titles, your DS can play 'em and they can be good ol' fashioned fun any way you slice it. Not to mention cheaper.

Well, I am completely broke right now, and with school ending this week I am DYING to play something right now. I didn't even expect it. SB just added it a care package he sent. I wasn't even expecting it. It will be more than a try out, though. I will be erasing the data so I can play it as if I just got it.

Mario Kart DS.
Any of the GBA or DS Castlevania games, they're all amazing.
Advance Wars: Dual Strike.

Already have Mario Kart DS.

I better put my list of DS games I already have.

As for Castlevania, I was thinking about it. I heard good things about it, so might as well bite.

Hmm, you don't happen to be the friend he gave his winnings from the PGC contest away to?

Gotta add in Kirby: Canvas Curse.. I love that game. Also, Meteos and Sonic Rush.

I only got the Naruto swag from the Birthday contest, since I am the only one in the group still following Naruto. From the Podcast one I am trying the GC game out, since I always wanted to play the second one the most.

I also played those DS games you mentioned. I beat Sonic Rush last summer and Meteos was fun, but gets old after a while.

I was really skeptical about FFIII but I'm having an absolute blast with it right now.

It's definitely technical, grindy, and unforgiving but it's really brought out the oldschool RPG player in me.

I also loved Contact, though I think I'm in the minority on that one.  It's easily one of my 2 or 3 favorite DS games.  Bar none the best RPG on the system.

I also love Contact, but it's very easy to see that it's a game that is either loved or hated...There is no middle ground... ='D

If you like point-and-click adventures, buy Touch Detective and/or Trace Memory...You should already own Kirby Canvas Curse!

I don't get Kirby Canvas Curse... it's like...I just don't get it. What was so great about it? I got bored real quick.

Canvas Curse annoyed me.  Getting Kirby to go where I wanted him to felt like a chore to me.

WHAT?! That, my friend, is blasphemous.. You "just didn't get" Mario Galaxy either. I'm speechless

I've been a fanboi so long that not even Nintendo games can slake my thirst. I hold Nintendo to the highest standards!

... but I buy third party games by the bucket load because I condescendingly don't expect them to be that good at all. When I buy third party games its more like a "oh, that was a nice effort, here, have a game sale" act with a sneer on my face.

...I don't like the new me. /scared

if you like strategy games i suggest advance wars, its really good.

other then that i think your covered, especially with partners in time, i love that game, i wish alpha dream (or who ever developed it, i think its alpha dream) would translate their gba rpg game and send it here

I don't like Canvas Curse either, one of the most boring games i've ever played in my entire life, Yoshi Touch N Go is 100 times better. There wont be any good new DS games until Hotel Dusk. The only DS games I really play now are New SMB and Brain Training anyway, with the occasional Mario Kart. I'm happy.

advanced wars, all three of them are great. (though i found 2 to be the hardest...)

final fantasy 3 is a great DS game. it has actually distracted me from my wii playing.

of course there are ff4 and ff5.

pokemon games are fun too (i am a RPG kinda guy, if you didn't notice)

Thsi should be the official "what game should I get?" thread.  Since I'm here, one more vote in favour of Canvas Curse.

OK, let's narrow down my choices (the * indicates that I am very interested in them):
Advance wars
*Final Fantasy III
*Castlevania Portrait of Ruin
Touch detective
*Yoshi's Island DS
Canvas curse
Mario hoops 3 on 3
Mario vs. DK 2
*Super Princess Peach
*Clubhouse games
*Rocket slime
The Rub rabbits

I used Gamestop's list when making my own. If anyone has further info on these games I will greatly appreciate it.

I'd recommend against Yoshi and Rocket Slime, personally.

I thought Rocket Slime was an absolute blast for the first few hours but it that enthusiasm faded and all that was left was a overly simplistic Zelda clone with a series grating, forced attempts at humor and paper-thin gameplay.

The tank battles were indeed fun but the fact is that, like the rest of the game, they're so easy that have to try to fail.  I died once in the entire game, during a tank battle where I'd forgotten to put the new ammo I'd gotten into my tank.

Yoshi has all the elements of a good platformer, but plays everything so safe that it just feels bland.

We already have one of those.

I whole-heartedly recommend Dawn of Sorrow.  I've purchased but haven't tried Portrait of Ruin yet.

Well, Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow, the first one, is easily better than the new one and probably the best DS game i have (and i have quite a few)

My younger brother is sooo addicted to Advance Wars: DS right now. I bought it used waaay after its release and now its consumed his life. It's not just advance wars too, it also has some sort of real-time mode where you use the touch screen to control one unit in real time versus enemies... yeah, that game is more fleshed out than the straight sequel I thought it was.

Rocket Slime is the only other game on there that elicits a personal response from me. Yes, it's a 6-8 hour playthrough with maybe 10+ hours including collecting. Yes the tank battles aren't nearly as challenging as they should be. But you know what? It's just good, clean fun. It's relaxing to play, and a joy to control. It feels like the Super Nintendo. And it's the closest that SE has ever come to plain, straightforward, action-rpg fun since Secret of Mana, in my opinion.

Not to mention the game's great, punny humor and simple-concept-yet-satisfying-gameplay are also big pluses.

Put an asterisk next to Touch Detective. O:<

Well, the main reason I want Portrait is because of the Wifi co-op mode. If I can't play a Wii this holiday, at least I can do some DS online with SB. I don't get to see him and Cap often, so I am looking forward to playing online games.

And Smoke, the reason I didn't put an asterik on TD was because the game might be rare around here.

u do not want mario hoops or super princess peach. i thought they were both horrible games....hoops AI is terrible and the comp players dont present a challenge whatsoever and the game just gets really really really old really quick.  I would def recommend both castlevania games....ive never played a castlevania game before dawn of sorrow and im absolutely in love with it, my favoirte game on the DS...also yoshis island....and canvas curse was pretty good.
