Wow, the DS really is the world's most powerful system! For the Wii would be awesome as well, but this is just as good. (Though the DS needs it less?) Still, this is a major blow for the Sony!

This is seriously the craziest piece of gaming news I've heard since I saw the first unveiling of the Wiimote.
Holy crap.
Wow. I'm in tears, not sadness, happiness, or anything, just CRAZED BEWILDERMENT.

This not only proves that S-E means business with Nintendo, the DS is a powerful gaming juggernaut.
I mean, the main DQ games would ONLY appear on the hottest gaming consoles, and this proves it.
Also, it occurred to me...With the announcement of a new main DQ being a Nintendo exclusive I wouldn't be surprised if they included a DQ character in SSB Brawl.
As someone mentioned in Go Nintendo, hopefully the DS version will sell so well DQ X will go to the Wii.

Damn, that's unexpected.. although I'm pretty sure that there will be at least one Dragon Quest iteration on a console this generation. Hopefully it's on Wii!
I wonder how much more the DS will sell when this comes out.
EDIT: This is the first non-spinoff/non-remake Square Enix game on a Nintendo platform since the SNES, right?

Wow. I'm way too tired (w00t 14/20 pages on a term paper done) to comprehend this news right now.
IceCold, I believe that is correct.

If you don't include Japan. Square has been making Mystery Dungeon games for the the Gameboy Advance. (Though it could be argued that its a spin off game but its popular in Japan.)

This is WOW.
ISure, fanboys would've wanted it on the Wii, but this is almost as good since it shows that SE is willing to throw its weight behind Nintendo again and it means that DQIX will not be a major selling point for the PS3... Now FFXIII is the prop that's holding up the PS3 in Japan and little else... hmm...

There is a real risk the DS could print too much money, and cause NCL's bank of choice to explode.

I hope Nintendo had already finished building its new plant to manufacture all the DS's that they are about to sell. 300k sold weekly for the next year and 120+ new games announced by various small and large 3rd parties over the next 4-5 months.
Believe.

Crazy. It would have been wonderful if this were announced for Wii. . . But this is also wonderful and absurdly shocking! Ha! I wonder how much heads-up Sony had. I can only imagine their shock. Co-operative online play makes me happy!
Oi! Go you crazy lil' dual-screened handheld!

Like I mentioned in the talkback thread, the Wii was just released. I think Square is waiting to see how the Wii does before dropping its big guns, while the DS is already a proven worldwide success.
Like some has said, if the Wii does well (which will) and the DS game sells well (like it won't!) we can expect DQ X on the Wii, alongside other big names.
This will completely affect Nintendo and its consoles in a BIG way, trust me.

Can we start calling the DS a console now? ='D

I read about this and my jaw dropped. This is such a HUGE kick in Sony's teeth. Not only did they just lost the #1 game in Japan to Nintendo, But they lost it to a handheld!
Its funny 1pU was going on about how this "unknown" DragonQuest game was most likely going to be a PSP game since its being announced on the same day the PSP was released in Japan 2 years ago. Tis a Dark day for Sony Fanboys everywhere. But its a day of celebration for us Nintendo fans!
From JoyStiq
Quote The strange and somewhat pathetic sobbing you hear in the background originates from the offices of Microsoft and Sony, where once diligent executives have now completely broken down and given up on much of their lives. Square Enix just handed Nintendo the keys to the Death Star. As if the DS wasn't already an unrelenting steamroller in terms of sales and popularity, it was announced today that Dragon Quest IX would be released exclusively on the most touchy-feely of portable systems.
In the unlikely event that you've been stuck in some sort of spatial anomaly (like Disneyland) for the last few years, it's important to remind you that the Dragon Quest franchise is one of the most popular properties ever in the minds of Japanese gamers. It was widely expected that the next instalment in the franchise would move to the PS3, an expectation that has now been crushed beneath Satoru Iwata's diamond-encrusted boot. Expect more news on the title as the week continues -- for now, all we know is: it's being developed by Level 5, it supports multiplayer battles and the subtitle is something along the lines of "Protector of the Starry Sky."

This makes so much sense!
- no gambling on new systems that are barely available to the public - compared to putting it on Wii, it's probably not as enraging for Sony or for gamers that were expecting it to be on PS3 - strategically, it doesn't doesn't help Wii create a Nintendo monopoly in Japan
Anyway the game looks pretty nice, I hear the battle system is going action based - I'm all for that but I hope it plays well. Nice news!

Personally I'm hoping for the next iteration of the DS itself. Physically Larger and brighter Screen, Thinner, More ergonomic, better batter life, and quality internal speakers.

Its official, handhelds are the new consoles. Everyone is shocked that the real deal is being released on a handheld. Handhelds have always been looked at as some sort of secondary, wannabe system. Some people here are even disappointed it isn't on a console. Welcome to a world where a handheld can satisfy all your gaming needs. In the past companies always tried to move the experience of consoles to handhelds, believing the console experience was what people wanted. Now we have the big games going to handhelds and the handhelds being used as a basis for consoles. Welcome to the future, or maybe we just entered bizarro world.

Quote -The game has been secretly under development for over a year now.
-DQ IX can be played through as a single-player game. It's stressed that since this is part of the main series, it wouldn't be right for it to just be an online multiplayer RPG. Thus, having great single-player is very important too.
-As if it wasn't obvious already, Akira Toriyama will be returning for the character designs. He says the DS has made things fresh.
-When you change your characters' equipment, the changes will be visible on their bodies.
-The 4-player online demo played at the conference took place in the starting town and nearby field.
-Monsters will be seen moving around on the field; no random battles. If you get close to one, it may approach you and attack. In battle, you'll be able to move around and attack enemies in real-time.

Many of those replies on Joystiq's article are hilarious.
Quote from a Mr./Mrs. OrganicShadow "Sure, the DS is selling like crazy and tons of people have one, but is sales of the game worth sacrificing the depth and graphical brilliance that Level5 keeps nailing on consoles? I think not. SE/Level5 are making a very grave mistake by basically raping a franchise for it's revenue."
What it must be like to live in their heads...

Well its finally official now, Sony lost. DQIX not being on the PS3 (or even PS2... PSP even?) means a large portion of Japan no longer cares... or at least their interest in the system dropped pretty low after this.
Funny how SE was responsible for Sony's success, and are now taking it away from them... lol. Next is Kingdom Hearts.

Regarding Blue Plant's comments:
You know, I'd prefer DQ on a home console just because I believe RPGs aren't great for handheld gaming, but if it's designed for handheld gaming, DQ IX could still be amazing. My response to anyone who thinks otherwise is: Have a look at the portable The Legend of Zelda games, especially Link's Awakening.

am i one of the few who will miss 'old school' rpgs? don't get me wrong, tales of symphonia and gaunlet were great games, but i'd rather see a breaking from the norm rather than an abandoning it.
that being said, DQ9 on the ds is an amazing announcement. depending on how they do the wifi team (can i play the same game with friends and off line?) this is a step towards mmo for the ds.

Then you were never that interested in Dragon Quest anyway.
Traditional vs. Action RPGs: It depends on what you classify as an action RPG. Personally, I'm all for adding Super Mario RPG / Paper Mario-style action to each and every RPG, where it's still turn based but you have a little bit of reflex action in there - it just adds more interactivity to the combat. However, in terms of say, everything being like Tales of Symphonia where battles are totally real-time and have kind of a simplistic fighting game engine thrown in, I would be disappointed if all RPGs went that way.
In DQ's case in particular, I'm worried they won't pull off the action that well but in theory I don't mind the change. One thing I'm all in favour of both in this game and in RPGs in general, is eliminating random battles. I don't hate them as much as some people, but I do think they're outdated and inferior.

Toriyama still being on board is great news imo. Having DQ without Toriyama? You might as well have Zelda w/ out ... Link (maybe not the best comparision, but you get the idea). Having Toriyama is a big part of the series' success imo. The man has moved multiple industries, he is a god in Japan.

I agree. I believe that the how the Mario RPGs did it is the evolution of RPGs in the proper direction. Mini-game menu driven combat.
Also if that video is all real-time color me impressed.
