Quote 'This Week' column in Yomiuri Shimbun morning edition reports that Square-Enix will hold a Dragon Quest presentation this Tuesday (12th December).
Details about it are unclear at this point but its likely that Dragon Quest Monster Joker (DS) and Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors (Wii) will be present.
Still unknown at this point if new Dragon Quest games will be announced.
I'm prety sure they wouldn't hold a press onference w/o something NEW to announce would they? Anyone think this could be the long awaited DQ9 for Wii announcement or is it still too early?
p.s. 3000th post!!!! pop the Champagne and throw some confetti, I'm havin a party!!!

DQ9 exclusively for PS3. Because they're just that stupid.

If DQ9 is a Wii exclusive we can stop questioning right now and know that Wii has won this generation for sure. I agree with Bill, I think it will be for PS2 and Wii.... I hope if thats the case the Wii version is a timed exclusive. But for some reason I'm thinking DQ9 won't even be mentioned at this thing...

I have to agree with this as well.
I honestly don't see the next DQ game being a Wii exclusive. As much as I believe Square when they say that they don't want Sony to be the market leader they are still supporting Sony.
As for the conference I suspect the following: - Square/Dragon quest games for the VC in Japan - Re-release/remakes of the classic DQ games on the GBA/DS (considering the success of the FFIII remake on the DS I wouldn't be surprised if they greenlight a DQ remake) - New footage of DQ Yangus (the DQ spin off starring Yangus from DQ VIII) - New info and footage of Itadaki Street special featuring Mario - The unveiling of DQ 9 for one of the next gen consoles
I may be wrong so all of these may not happen, but considering some of these are the latest games under the DQ name this is the perfect opportunity to show them all off.

You forgot the FF13 CGI footege, oh well.
Here's another prediction: the wii gets another spinoff of a greater game that's on the PS2/3
If they were really stupid they's make FF13 for the 360 because of how well Blue dragon increased it's popularty.

Actually. I know it makes good business sense and all to port the DQ series to the DS because of how many there are out there but it be nice if they instead put them on the Virtual Console. It be elegant solution for them. They have a game in the DQ Universe coming out for the Wii and having some of them on there would be a nice way to get a little hype in.

Dragon's Quest IX will not be announced for PS3 at this event. Dragon's Quest games have alway been brought to the system with the biggest install base. Enix always wanted to see how system sales went before making that determination. I wouldn't expect to hear a DQIX announcement sometime next year. DQIX will be on which ever system sells the best over the next 6 to 12 months.

Dragon Quest 9 for PS2 and Wii sounds reasonable. Here's a thought... Say DQ9 is announced for PS2 and Wii. Would it be possible for developers to put a "PS3 mode" into the PS2 version that would up the resolution, texture detail, etc when played on a PS3? This would also apply to GCN/Wii if there was anything good still coming out on the GCN.

No. Because of the space requirements at the minimum for the extra detailed stuff. Now lets say that Wii games could be on GCN discs and PS3 games could be on PS2 discs. They could on the other hand take advantage of the faster processors in other ways that didn't involve keeping large assets on a disc.

Well Square-Enix said they don't want either Sony or Nintendo to be the monopoly leader. PS3 already has Final Fantasy 13 and the spinoffs, so Dragon Quest would have to show up on either Wii or Xbox 360, lest they look like royal stupid hypocrites.
Having both Final Fantasy main series and Dragon Quest main series on one system is going against the statement that S-E made about not wanting Sony or Nintendo having too much of a market share.

I'll play Devil's Advocate: with the recent popularity of Nintendo's non-gamer games, Nintendo doesn't even need Square Enix's support.
Not that it would be unappreciated, and without more Square Enix Nintendo won't dominate the way it could. I want DQ9 on Wii as much as anybody, but I'm mentally preparing myself for disappointment.

With S-E, the only thing to look forward to these day, generally speaking, is disappointment. Sad to say, but S-E has fallen hard. Most of their PS games are crap (Xenogears (yes, I said it's crap) Threads of Fate, Brave Fencer Mushashi, Legend of Mana, on and on, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII) And the PS2 hasn't done much better.

Square-Enix should shorten its name to SEx, so if they make games for the Wii we can all say "I have a Wii, so I can enjoy SEx games." o_0 Admit it, it's funny.
I actually liked Legend Of Mana, but to each his own, I guess. But that's true, at some point Square(-Enix) slipped. Perhaps after printing money with their most-overrated-game-in-the-world Final Fantasy VII in the world, they just didn't put as much effort into their games since they knew the Square name would sell a game regardless. Or something. Or maybe it's just that expectations have raised with each of their good games that everything less is a disappointment, so maybe they shouldn't churn out games as fast as they do. Generally their games are probably still decent (if I ever owned a PS2, Kingdom Hearts is on the short list of games I'd play, and yes, even FF X and XII just because I played the first nine, but then again maybe that's my problem), and maybe I'm just all oldschool, but I missed the Square(soft) Super Nintendo RPGs. I honestly wouldn't mind even playing FF: Mystic Quest again. Yes, I said it. Tristam is cool.

FF: MQ was a fun game, even if my copy had a dreaded freeze glitch in the ice waterfall area, it would freeze up after every fight. I had to save the game immediately and then reset because it would always freeze after a fight in that area.

With the reliance of the FF name to sell games (FF: Adventure is really Seiken Densetsu/the original Sword Of Mana, FF: Legend is really part of SaGa or something, FF: Chronicles included Chrono Trigger, FF: Mystic Quest isn't like other FF games, FF: Spirits Within had some elements from FF games but was overall just an unrelated sci-fi adventure, some people I knew were disappointed in FF: Crystal Chronicles because they were expecting different, etc. - I'm surprised the Chocobo games aren't more explicit in their relation to FF) I think Dairy Queen might have the right idea... "DQ: Something Different."
But DQ isn't as popular worldwide as FF. I wonder why DQ is so big in Japan, sometimes even more popular than FF! Slimes > Chocobos?

Just look at how beautiful it is for a ds game. . . .
Square really knows how to push the limits of the system they are working on. This and Chocobo's magic storybook look like 2 of the most beautiful ds games coming out in the near future.

I am playing it right now and I am loving it. It has a very old school feel to it and the cel shading is great. In battle the enemies look so close to their 2d counterparts its scary. It rivals other games as the best cel shading in a game yet.

DQ8 is long, has great grafix and a pretty good story. I really miss the turn based RPGs with the characters standing in a row and and not moving all over the battlefield. Although FFXII is pretty sweet. I'm a little concerned about DQ Swords. It looks like it could be absolutely retarded. I really hope it's good but I don't have high hopes.

Ah DQ8...great if for JEssica alone. But it has more than that! Love the music, lvoe the story, love the graphics, love the tried and true gameplay that just feels good and right in DQ8. Easily my pick for 2nd best RPG of 2005. (Apparently some forget that fire Emblem: Path of Radience came out the same year. That, of course, isntantly becoming the ebs tRPG on the freaking GameCube...my love of Tales of Symphonia, Skies, and Baten be damned!)

But maybe it should have been. Think about it. Look at Japanese sales figures.
Half of the top 30 games are DS games. Granted there are a lot of Wii games on that list, but remember that was the Wii's launch week. I think there is a real chance this is the start of some new trend where major IPs don't just do side games on handhelds.

I would say that is because when DQ came out in America, are little minds didn't catch on to that style of play until much later and by then it was Final Fantasy that was being delivered to us. Japan on the other hand I believe got DQ first and fell in love with it from the start.
I can't wait to get my RPG fix, Children of Mana, FFIII, FF: Crystal Chronicles, Tales of the Tempest, and now DQ!

We had that long drought of Dragon Warrior (as they series was called in the US until Dragon Quest VIII). We got Dragon Warrior (I-IV) on the NES, and Final Fantasy. However, Enix of America closed and as such did not bring later Dragon Warrior (V, VI, VII) games to the US, where as SquareSoft (except III) brought Final Fantasy over. As such the series never had a continuous cache in the US. Final Fantasy became THE STANDARD.
In Europe only Dragon Quest VIII and Dragon Warrior Monsters have been released, so the brand had very little recognition.

This proves my theory that they might re-release the missing DQ games through the VC or as remakes or re-releases.
I think some people are severely underestimating how this piece of news will affect Nintendo, the DS and the Wii. I see nothing but great things for Nintendo.

Yeah, it would have meant a lot more to Wii than to DS, but I think that's exactly why Square Enix put it on DS. I don't think the company wants Wii doing "too well", and right now all indicators suggest that Wii is ready to kick some serious butt.

I don't see square making that choice based on how well wii is doing currently. PS3 is still getting final fantasy after all. Square from what I've read is disgruntled with Sony, so I don't see why they wouldn't put DQ on the wii to help it further compete with Sony. I mean face it, once FF13 hits japan PS3 by all means should sell like hot cakes.

Yeah but like I said, the Wii was just released, so I wouldn't be surprised if Square is waiting to see how the Wii and its games do before pursuing anymore games on the system. Besides, they already have FF CC and DQ swords for the launch window, so the support is there.
Also, remember that it took Square nearly a year for them to reveal Before Crisis FFVII for the PSP, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the reasons was that they were doubting if the PSP was going to take off. Its true that the PS3 has FFXIII and its spin off games, but I'm guessing Sony is paying them off to have that game exclusive. I mean, considering that the PS3 has very little killer apps, canning the game would kill it for good.
And one last thing, DQ is far more popular than FF in Japan. Not only is DQ one of the first RPG series in Japan (the creator of Final Fantasy even admitted that he was extremely inspired by DQ), its so popular that they created a law that demands the DQ games to be released on a weekend because schools and companies fear that its employees and students buy the game and play hooky. Can you mention any other series that has this type of power?
Title: RE: Square Enix to Hold a DQ Press Conference on Tuesday

We won't be seeing DQ on the VC. The writing is already on the wall. Unless Nintendo has a wicked tie-in ratio between Wii owners and DS owners that is. If not then they'll port each way to the DS making maximum profit from the larger user base. Then re-releasing them on the next Nintendo Console VC.
But I still want a release date on the Dragon Quest game for Wii. (Swords something or another.)

Ok, I'm with ryancoke on this one.
I played Dragon Quest VII too, and while I won't say it was the WORST RPG I've ever played, it was definitely far from being one of the best (and nowhere near the quality of most Final Fantasies, if you ask me). I really don't understand the hype surrounding this series, and the screens and videos don't look interesting at all. But that might be because I can't stand Akira Toriyama and his 'One Face Fits All' art style. So yeah, this is no megaton for me. DQ on DS might make waves in Japan, but I don't see it making much of a splash here in the states.
But don't get me wrong, it's SILL nice to see them supporting Nintendo. But I won't consider Square-Enix fully on board with Nintendo again until they put a serious, big-budget, mega-hyped (doesn't have to be the big FF or DQ, but something that seems like there's been just as much thought put into it, and not some doomed from the start side-project like FF:CC) RPG on a Nintendo home console.
