Title: Wii Sports Carboard "Case"
Post by: Shecky on November 23, 2006, 03:13:02 PM
Started to scratch my disc so it *had* to go.  Here is the replacement I created:

Works perfectly and it won't scratch my disc.

That is very nice looking. Good job!

Funny, I never though about just putting Wii Sports in a standard jewel case. I was planning on buying an official Wii case, but something like this would work for now.

Shhhhhhhhhhhiiiiitttttt that looks awesome... You are going to post source images so we can print out our own, right?

I would be glad to do it, but I have nowhere to throw it.  The free hosting I get with SBC couldn't even keep up with those pictures, and my local webserver wouldn't be able to take the load (not to mention SBC would likely have a fit)

I'm just using a generic white dvd case and printing out this cover for it on the colour laser at work.

Well the problem is that the compressed postscript file is ~20MB.  The program I used to lay it out is Nero Cover Designer on my Windoze box, and that file is ~12MB.  Neither of these would make it past most email size restrictions.

If you don't mind artifacting, I can run a stock ps2pdf and get it to around ~4MB.

I'll work something out and try and get it available.

That wouldnt eb a problem if I was emailing it I do not have size resrtictions on files. maybe I could PM you my FTP info and you could upload it directly.

Have you tried loading in into a Wii and emailing it from there? I dont think they have size restrictions.

Nice!  I didn't think of a CD case, maybe I'll do something similar (only lazier).

Yeah, I got mine made today and I used the fourth one that's on TCP:

It's MookyJooky's... I think it's one of the best I've seen.

i saved it and printed and it was on like 4 sheets of paper and waaaaay to big for the case

Ok, so I got it into a reasonable sized JPG....

I uploaded it to thecoverproject.net.  not sure what happens after that, but you should be able to snarf it directly from:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=1838

Here is a preview:

This is a CD/DVD jewel case cover design, designed to go with the WiiSports booklet and DVD that come with the US Wii.  It is not for a traditional DVD case.

Yeah, a lot of people have been wanting a new case. Well, can't you just cut up the original cardboard it came in and then stuff that and the manual in a jewelcase? The only difference would lie in the cover of the cardboard, that would have to be trashed. Also, the sides of the case wouldn't have anything on them unless you printed something off. Is there a way you could give us a nice 24-bit PNG of just the sides of the jewel case? That wouldn't be too large in size.

Really, the JPG link above prints ok.  You have to put your nose up to the thing to see any notable artifacts.  Print it on plain paper using a print resolution of 300 or greater and take a look.

If you really just want the side, you can follow this link.  For as long as the 4.2MB/hr rate holds out at the SBC site.

For getting it to print at the right size, it depends on the program your using.  Thecoverproject.net has a nice guide.

The CD case version is really what I want.  Both are very well done!
I'll probably just make my own though, downloading on dialup SUCKS worse than ever and I only saw links to he DVD case version.
Good job Shecky!

Kings X> There is a link above for the CD case version if your interested (or just follow this link)
It's a little under 2MB so it may not be too bad on your dialup.

Also, I suppose I could email the PNG to anyone directly if they're so interested.  Just PM me.

guys I am having some problems with printing the DVD inserts from TheCoverProject.   Everytime I print it ends up on 4 or 5 pages.   I tried shrinking it down to like 25% of its original size and i got something that is decent but not nice.   I have been using MSPaint to print, because I dont have any other Paint type program.   If anyone has any solutions, I would be much appreciative.

Someone should have told me the colors were off... I used a better Windoze PS driver and updated the links above.... Blue now looks blue and not teal.

Ugh, to print a DVD insert you need legal paper...who uses legal paper?

Nice job, Shecky! But I have to believe that you could run that postscript file through Adobe Distiller and get it down to a more reasonable size... I run press-quality PDFs out of Distiller all the time for publication in magazines and newspapers, and it's rare that the files are over a couple MB.

A PDF should make it easy for LunaticFringe to print as well, since Reader is the intended program for PDFs, and it's free and widely available...

EDIT: speling

I'll just wait for the official Wii Sports DVD cover.  Apparently us Aussies get a real DVD case instead of a cardboard sleeve.

I can accept 40MB per e-mail. If you want, I'll host it on my server. I get 2.5TB (yes, terrabytes) of bandwidth a month.

Did you notice these people selling an artwork + empty dvd case on Ebay?
Sure they're usually around 3 or 5 bucks but still, that's kinda lame.
Title: RE: Wii Sports Carboard "Case"
Post by: Shecky on November 28, 2006, 09:22:22 AM
Only lame if they didn't do the legwork to create the insert right?  Otherwise, someone creates something nice, they should be able to sell it those who don't want to bother collecting the resources to make their own.  Especially if they also make it freely available for those that do.  If jewel cases weren't a pain to ship I might have done the same thing (seeing as how I have a few spare clear-tray jewel cases).

Edit:  Another kink (and another reason why I will not try to sell any) is that the created insert contains copyrighted images/property.

I went the E-Bay route (because I'm too lazy to go through the hassle of going to Target, buying the Wii Preview DVD, printing a Wii Sports cover, cutting the cover and placing it inside the case.)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190060124493

I bought 2 for $4.99 each, plus $8.98 shipping.

Before everyone proceeds to tell me how I got molested by these shipping charges, I already know.

ya, cause thats a lot easier than just getting a white dvd case and printing out a cover that

total cost - $0.05 tops

your cost - $14.00

dude, thats like almost 2 virtual console games, or almost 3 NES games

.....SMART CHOICE?

It only costs 5 cents if your time is worth nothing.

We got actual DVD cases here in the UK too, if anyone wants I can post a scan of it, when I saw a video of someone with a Wii and saw a cardboard case, I thought we'd get them like that too, but I found out Europe gets DVD cased ones on another video, also NoE forums are crap.

Wow, all you people going to so much effort makes me feel lazy.  All I did was stuff the instruction manual into an old cd case.  Works perfectly and works fine, even if it isn't the correct dvd size.
