Title: I want a Wii now...
Post by: MedievalMan on November 21, 2006, 03:24:27 AM
I'm still a bit disappointed by the launch lineup, but it's pretty good compared to other launch lineups
To me, at least, there's only 1 game worth getting so far (besides playing Wii Sports!), Zelda. Some other games definately look worth a rent though (Excite Truck, Red Steel.) It seems Red Steel had some great ideas, but wasn't implemented as good as it could have been. Perhaps we'll see some awesome FPS's on Wii (certainly, Metroid Prime 3.)
Although, from reviews I've read, a lot of people feel the Zelda controls are just "tacked" on (which I suppose is true from a development standpoint.) I would have liked to see actual sword strokes converted from Wii controller --> game accurately, instead of the more "digital" conservative control Nintendo went with.
My point is, there's not much reason to play Zelda on Wii over Zelda on Gamecube (which I already own).
However, I still can't wait to try out the Wii next week at my local EB (requires a driver's license, guess they don't want you running off with a Wii Controller!).
A few questions:
1) Can you play the Wii games (ie. bowling) multiplayer by just passing the remote around and taking turns? I want to buy a Wii, but at $70 Cnd a pop, the controllers are a fortune.
2) Will Super Smash Brothers Brawl utilize the Wii controller for sensing of the fighting moves? This would be damn cool, but perhaps too frantic (as Smash Brothers is very frantic gameplay). Then again, look at some people on YouTube playing Wii Boxing...
I hope they do.. else what's the point of releasing the next Smash Brothers on Wii if they don't take advantage of the new controls (as the Wii isn't really significantly better than the GC in the graphics department.)

In an effort to keep this forum clean and because this was another thread I don't think belongs but I don't know where to direct him, I'm making this the offical "Ask a random question about Wii" thread.

I'll try and answer your questions too..
1) Yes, all turn based Wii Sports games (everything but Tennis and Boxing) can be done by passing a remote around.
2) It has been said that Brawl will not take advantage of motion controls (from E3). This may change. As for your what's the point comment... Maybe because the game needs a sequel and the online component of Wii could really help it. Also, why change one of the best fighters of all time?

I think you're right. Super Smash Bros doesn't need to much changing.
But if there going to release a new one for Wii, shouldn't there at least be an optional control scheme (keeping GC version style controls available as well) using the Wii remote sensing?
Hopefully Nintendo's online service for Wii remains free (the one for the DS is, it's handy, I like it).

I can say with absolute certainty, having played the GameCube version of Twilight Princess, that the Wii version's controls do NOT feel tacked on. The Wii version "feels" better and more responsive. The reason to play Zelda on the Wii is that it's the superior experience, period.
As for your questions ...
1) I believe you can, though if you have multiple controllers, they rumble and make a chime when it's your turn, so if someone wanders off to the kitchen to get a beer or something, they'll know you're waiting on them. I'll have to check to be sure.
2) If I remember correctly, they've stated that Super Smash Bros. Brawl would be playable either with Wii controllers, or with the GameCube controllers, though this was over a year ago and may have changed by now. I agree that if they don't use the Wii controllers or give people a reason not to use them, there doesn't seem to be much of a point. Every Nintendo game should show off the new control scheme, not regress. It's part of taking a leadership position.

Allow me to offer a tidbit not in the form of a question.
If you send an message to someone on Wii, it allows you to attach a Mii so that your Mii's face shows up on the letter. This does not send someone that Mii to roam about their Wii or attach to your address. You have to send the Mii from the Mii channel to do that.

The most frustrating part about attaching a Mii to an address is you have to do so based soley on their face. Why the heck can't we see their names too?

Quoted for truth. I haven't played the GameCube version, but compared to the other 3D Zeldas, the only complaint I might have about the controls in this one would be that you can't rotate the camera 360 degrees a la the c-stick in Wind Waker. Even that's not a big deal since the Z-targeting/camera centering seems to have been sharpened up a lot since the N64 games.

I have a question regarding Miis. If I send someone a Mii and then I update that Mii, does the Mii get automatically updated on the other person's Wii or do I have to resend it? If I resend it does it overwrite the old one or will be two of Mii running around his Wii?

You've been on my baseball team quite a few times, Pale.
Also, something important...
The Wii manual suggests that, the FURTHER you are sitting from the sensor bar, the higher you should set the sensitivity in the Wii's options menu.
Something to keep in mind for those sitting further than 8 feet back...

I've been wondering this too. I made a change to my Mii yesterday and I know I didn't resend it to SB...
SB, when you get a chance, look at my Mii and see if I have a open mouth smile or a closed mouth half smirk. If it's an open mouth smile, it auto changed.

I will when I get home, but I suspect it won't change because that would require that, upon logging on, the Wii would have to check every Mii ever created in the entirety of the Mii plaza for updates.
I'll check, but if it DID change, that "THUNK" noise will be my jaw hitting my knee.

Hmm, here's a question...
Has anyone discovered a way to stack VC games in a single channel? I'm starting to stress about save space. Nintendo kind of screwed up here. The SD cards don't expand anything... they back crap up. This is stupid. Why do I have to waste time swapping saves back and forth?
Also, many people will have more than 40 VC games by the end of the first year. When the channels get filled up those have to start being swapped in and out too, and the save states won't remain.

Yeah, but think of the volume of traffic we're talking about.
1. You can have up to 100 Miis in your plaza. If EVERY one of those Miis needs to check their "Mii of origin" for changes, on EVERY Wii on the network, it would be an insane amount of bandwidth moving around.
2. I don't think Miis are registered or tied in any way to the console they were created on, ergo, there's no way my Pale Mii knows that it should be updated from the original Mii from which it was wrought.
The more I talk about this, the more religious connotations it seems to have: is the creator relevant to the Mii, or are Miis made in our images entitled to the free will of possessing their original characteristics without vindication from the update procedure?
I need to think about this...
In the meantime, Pale, send me a new copy and let's see if he overwrites the one I have now.

I think you drastically overestimate the amount of data/bandwidth this would require. Remember, you can fit 10 Miis on your Wiimote, and it only has 6KB of memory resident. That means each Mii is less than 1KB, so even 100KB would only take a few seconds.
Title: RE: OFFICIAL Ask Random Questions About Wii Thread
Post by: Smash_Brother on November 21, 2006, 09:02:45 AM
True, but multiply that by a potential: 100 Miis per Wii X Every Wii sold which is online and has Miis on it sent from other people.
Besides that, I think point #2 holds up: has anyone seen any indication that Miis retain the knowledge of where they were created, beyond the simple "name of creator"?

I don't think Miis would update in emails, 'cause I'm sure Miis don't update on the Wii Message Board's memos. On the first day with the Wii my Mii looked a little different, and after adjusting my face, a couple original posts about Wii Sports still have my old face.
EDIT: Oops, I thought we were talking about Mii faces on emails and memos or whatever, and not the Mii Plaza...

Last I read, you can connect any USB device, it will "light up", but will not get a response from the Wii.
Which makes me think, did Nintendo implement the USB JUST for the USB router or are they actually planning to make good use of it.

They update when a controller which contains the Mii is connected, but I've yet to receive an updated version of Pale's Mii with a smiling mouth.
A friend did send me a Mii directly that I already had and the new one replaced the old one already in my plaza.

Did anyone else have Mii's on their Wii when they first got it?
I have one that says skin and another one that says Lil' D. I think somebody at the store I bought it at played it in the backroom or something since it has a message board post that says someone played a game I don't have the same day I bought it. All the contollers were still packaged tightly but it is possible someone took out the console. It would explain why Wal-mart miraculously had one Wii on Tuesday night and I was able to get it.

I didn't look at my Wii that closely so if it is true you can hook it up to a monitor then I cant figure out hwo to do it and the manual didnt say anythign about it.

I have a question about the firmware: is it possible to know what version is installed on the console? (via a menu or something) I'm still freaking out about the whole firmware update bricking the system and I'm not so sure I want to go online with mine, since it's imported from the US to Europe, I couldn't really send it back to Nintendo if it bricked.

I had the firmware problem, and when I called Nintendo about it, he said it was likely because when I downloaded the first update the internet connection was likely interrupted for a split second at a critical time. When I got my new one, I didn't even had to download anything. My advice to you would be to try to connect to the internet as soon as possible because if by a small chance your system does mess up, you cannot transfer your old saves from system to system, trust me I tried for a long time, and I guarantee you will eventually want your system on the internet. Hope this helps.

Here's a random question I haven't seen answered (and have no way of answering myself because none of my friends have a Wii yet).
Do Wii Sports points travel/update with your Mii from Wii to Wii? For example, if I have 1,000 points in Bowling and then I send my Mii to a friend's Mii, does my Mii on his Wii have the same score? More importantly, if I go over there to bowl and earn some points on my record does my Mii have the points on my Wii when I get home?
My guess to this is no. So here's a follow up question.
Could I send myself my own Mii from my friend's Wii to replace my Mii and update my Mii's record (assuming records transfer with Miis).
This is a confusing question; did anyone understand a word I just said?
Title: RE: OFFICIAL Ask Random Questions About Wii Thread

No, your Mii's points are tracked on the specific Wii: they don't travel with your Mii.

Smash_Bro is right - this is why the game tells you that if you delete the Mii off the console you will lose your stats. Miis are Miis only, not stat trackers; I've moved my Mii to many different Wiis now and have had no stats transfer and none of the stats on my Wii affected either. (This is partly due to the fact that you cannot copy Miis from Remote to Wii, you can only move them. I don't think I ever bothered to move a Mii back from a friend's Wii to my Wii, too much effort.)

Actually, I don't think this is as big of a problem. My friend tried to update the Wii with the new Wii Shop firmware and had to turn off his Wii mid upgrade and had no problems.
Also, several times I had to hard shutdown my Wii trying to connect to the internet and had no problems.
More likely franky005 had one of the Wiis that had initial problems out of the box. Just my theory.

Ok what are you considering copy? I moved my Miis from my busted Wii to my Replacement Wii and there on the memory. The thing is they get the blue pants and I can't edit them.

You can't copy them. You can only move them. If my Evan Mii is on a Remote, and I want him on a new Wii, he will be moved, and he will no longer be on my Remote. That's all I mean. I don't think it's functional, honestly, because you can copy the Miis back onto the Remote if you want and they'll stay on the Wii. It just makes "copying" a two step process.

1. Go to the main channel menu (i.e., turn on the Wii) 2. Select Wii options button in the lower left 3. Select "Wii Settings" on the right. 4. In the upper right corner, the firmware version is displayed (e.g., "Ver. 2.0U").
The version number might not be displayed in earlier firmware. If you have updated console since it was purchased (and you haven't), the number should be up there (at least on American consoles).

Is anyone else having slight Crackles in sound on their Wiimotes... ive had a lot of trouble with Zelda and more recently some glitches with Sports... is this cause my speakers are on too high, their on default settings, but i just want to make sure they are not defective... i thought with zelda it might have just been because the sounds were Ported, but now with Sports im slightly concerned

Hmmm, it's odd, I just double-checked and I don't see any number up there... Oh well, I believe I have the original firmware on it since I bought it on launch day at Amazon.com I also noticed I'm missing 2 options in the "Wii Settings Menu 3" (I've seen that on a Wii FAQ on Gamefaqs): - Country - Wii System Update Mine only shows "Language" and "Format Wii System Memory". Anyway, I'm waiting for Nintendo to release the ehternet-to-usb adapter to go online but I'm also a bit freaked out about the possibility of "bricking" the system.

Why didn't you have your friend in California run the update before sending it to you? That way, if it got bricked he/she could have gotten a replacement from Nintendo without all the hassle.

Errr, that's a good question vudu! lol I didn't think about that. Well, he doesn't play videogames at all and I guess I didn't want to ask yet another favor (the Wii story was pretty crazy). I don't even know if he was a wi-fi network at home (I don't think so). What happens to the bricked Wii btw? what goes wrong with it? can it still play games?

Here's a random question.
Is it possible to play multiplayer Wii Sports using my Mii but not have it affect my ranking? When I show friends/family how to play the game I generally like to take it easy on them at first and let them get a hang of the controls. This tends to bring down my ranking. Any way to avoid this (and still be able to use my Mii)?

You have to answer my random question before you can answer one of your own. Them's the rules.

Vudu: Clone your Mii, and use him for family multiplayer events. He will be like your loser doppleganger (Like with Xander in that one episode of Buffy)
ThePerm: Never heard of rough squadron. but the answer is yes. The Wii is very powerful. (go look at the rebirth tech demo for the gamecube and double it) http://youtube.com/watch?v=ylyXEMPaVHQ

Ummm, the Rebirth tech demo was pretty much all FMV. It's not an indication of what the Gamecube can do, let alone the Wii.
The Perm: I'm going to have to say no. I could be wrong, but Rogue Squadron was a first gen Wii, and so far nothing released or announced for the Wii has touched it, graphics-wise. We might get shorter games that look that good since there'll be more resources to devote to it, but I wouldn't expect any sort of epic game to look that good.

It's ridiculous how Rogue Squadron has held up against the new consoles in terms of graphics. That game is simply amazing- definitely one of the best looking games on the GC along with RE 4.
