Title: Loading noises

Is it normal to hear loading noises coming from the dvd drive of the wii when it boots up and shuts down. It sounds as if it is reading a disc (even though none is read)

Yep, totally normal. Probably checking the disc to see if there is updated software on it, not to mention loading the Wii Channel stuff.
