Title: That Internal Speaker...
Post by: MarioAllStar on November 19, 2006, 04:42:37 PM
How do you guys feel about it? Personally, the low quality eliminates any immersive feeling that it may provide. It just sounds "off" in games like Zelda. I love pretty much everything about the Wii hardware except for the speaker.

Not surprised. The general agreement is that the speaker is weak.
I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being one of the least used components of the system (like the mic is on the DS).

I like it. It's like rumble, but better.

My only problem with it is that the default volume is too high for Zelda. I haven't looked into changing it yet, though. No time for such little tasks. ;-)

If I ever have a spare Wiimote that I don't mind possibly breaking I am going to try and wire in a headphone jack or something. Then I could just put in a single ear bud and take advantage of it that way.
Remotes are already expensive, but it would have been interesting to see how the idea could have worked with better speakers.

Besides Zelda and Red Steel, what other launch games use the speaker?

Monkey Ball does to a small extent.

I also like the speaker in Zelda, especially the laugh.
But it is a bit loud on default settings.

Midna's laugh
But yeah, a simple press of the Home button in-game will bring you to the speaker volume adjuster if you so care...

It hasn't bothered me much, honestly. Well, the menu chimes from Monkey Ball annoy me when I'm flipping through the stages, but I just turn it down a little. Zelda has been OK with it IMO.

I turned that sh*t right the hell off. Every time it made any noise while playing Zelda, I looked at it, shocked and offended that the quality is so piss poor. What did it was the "You found a secret!" jingle. It sounded so much better coming out of my stereo speakers then it did out of the remote. I think it's a great idea, but its execution leaves a lot to be desired.

I don't have a problem with the quality so much as I'm still in the dark as to how to turn it up/down in game. It's a bit alarming to be playing and hear a loud laugh or other sound effect coming from next to you.
And yes, Midna (and her voice) is unbelievably cute (and that adorable always-evil grin!)
Edit: And now reading Bill's post, I know! Thanks. :D

I'm enjoying it in almost every other games except Zelda. (Well Rayman and Wii Sports it work.) It just some of the noises that come out of Zelda are unneeded and really don't fit.

I agree, except for the bit about it being better than rumble. I think rumble has gone from a neat novelty to an absolute necessity with the Wii.

I think it's a great idea in concept. In Tennis, it's very cool. In Zelda, it does seem a bit off. I'll try turning the volume down and hopefully that will help.

The remote speaker is good when you are playing Wii Sports because it lets you know it's your turn. Other than that I think the remote speaker in general sounds like crap. The sound is really low quality, and like my friend said, "It sounds like the speaker in those crappy action figures." If Nintendo would have put something of a little higher caliber in there it would've been much more effective.

I like it. Hearing (and feeling) when it's your turn when playing Wii Bowling or the mini games in Super Monkey Ball is helpful. I've even come to enjoy it in Zelda. It is awfully loud by default, but I think if you turn it down a bit, you'll get used to it.

Maybe I need more exposure to it, but I really dig ther speaker. It isn't hi-fi, but it's good enough to do voice and by gosh that's good enough for me! Is it really as good as the DS speaker... because that's excellent quality by non-audiophile standards.

the speaker is my favorite feature of the Wii
I don't know what the complaints of lofi and hi-volume are about..
it says in the manual how to change the volume I didn't care to
Madden uses it extensively the QB talks thru it Madden himself gives advice or mocks you
WiiSports uses it well
Its about timing and so far its never seemed out of place to me
but all ya'll seem to be complaining bout its use in Zelda a game a don't own so mabye it suck in that I don't know
In tandem with rumble it provides unparalelled feedback I personally can't wait to see how devs use it to enhance gameplay

At this point I've turned the rumble off and kept the speaker on. The wii menu rumbling was a waste of batteries to me, but the speaker has amused me in the hour and a half I've played of Zelda. You throw a rock, and the whoosh comes from the remote, but the crashing of the rock breaking came from the tele vision. Kinda neat

After putting a bit more time in with Zelda, I take back what I said. The speaker sucks. It is now muted.
It works well for Wii Sports. And there are certain times in Zelda where, if the speaker volume isn't too loud, and sound is coming out of both the speaker and the tv simultaneously, it creates a nice surround effect....like when it's raining. Oh, and Minda's laugh is nice.
...But then there are times, like when you swing your sword, or cast your fishing line, where you'll look around for the cheap action figure that's making all the annoying noise, only to discover that, apparently, the $300 you paid doesn't quite cover non-crappy sound effects that don't make you want to claw your eardrums out.

For those asking, you change the volume by hitting the home button and going into your controller options.
I expected the speaker to sound pretty bad, so I'm not really disappointed. I hope it's something that can be improved in the future. I'd certainly buy new remotes if the speakers sounded significantly better.

I was going to read all of your posts, but I got bored after like 6 of them so here are my 2 cents; When playing WiiSports I was oh cool, that was awesome to hear the sounds of my racket, fist, and bat hitting things and people. In Madden, the speaker blows, because you hear the QB say HUT! HUT!, it was very unnerving, if I'm supposed to be the quarterback I shouldn't hear someone else yelling out MY cadence!! Hearing the catches and throws(maybe i was hallucinating?) was cool though.

People seem to be talking like it's possible to shut the speaker off AND have the sounds that would have come out of it come out of the main speakers in Zelda. I do not see this option.

Pale, almost all of thesounds will come out of the speakers when you just simply turn the speaker all the way down. It is in the home button menu in-game.

I personally do not mind the speaker. It is not the best quality (especially zelda), but it gives it a nice touch so I can overlook the poor quality of the speaker sounds.

Anyone notice the plastic on the remote strap has a corner flattened off - just like the back of the wii? There should be a thread for all these little things.

Right. The only thing that doesn't come over, as far as I can tell, is Minda's laugh.

The speaker sounds fine. What do you honestly expect from something shoehorned into a controller? It's just not going to be able to handle full-quality sound fidelity and maintain acceptable battery consumption. I have found that if you set the Wii-mote speaker volume to "3" it sounds crystal clear and is more of a compliment to the audio coming from the TV/Home Theater system than when it's at the factory default volume of "8" and overpowering the audio coming through your main speakers.

Also on the power brick. And the sensor bar input plug. I like it, it's an homage (or a blatant lack of new ideas) to the NES' controller plug. Or an homage to Battlestar Galactica, but they have all four corners on everything flattened off. Maybe Nintendo is admitting they're only 1/4th as awesome as Battlestar Galactica.
Anyways, back on topic. I turned the speaker back on for Zelda, but I turned the volume to the lowest possible setting. It's a bit better that way, but I think it's used too much and relied upon too heavily in Zelda. I like the sword unsheathing, Midna's laugh and the slingshot wind-up sound, but the "I found a secret!" jingle is awful. That speaker should be entirely supplementary and used very sparingly. It should work in that role.

To bump my own topic, I would like to add that my opinion has changed a bit. I no longer cringe when I hear the speaker and the quality does not bother me. In fact, I enjoy to hear some of the sounds come from it (like the bottle cap being inserted after capturing the fairy). So the speaker does have its uses .

I've found that by lowering the volume of the speaker the crackle and popping is decreased. The end result is it does sound better.

I would like that speaker more if I could make it quieter. Even on the lowest setting the speaker easily overpowers the actually audio in Zelda and all the games that use it, except for the one mini-game you need it in Rayman go figure. I have it on the 1 bar setting. I just don't need my system that loud to hear everything. I like it a lot more if I could make it softer.
