Title: 3rd party Wii Component Cables at Best Buy
Post by: BranDonk Kong on November 18, 2006, 02:57:02 PM
I was just there, they have 2 or 3 different brands which I'm assuming will be available for sale tomorrow. Just thought I'd pass it on.

Hmmm.

Along with a GGC, these would be $20.

If they work well, this would be a great deal.  Someone needs to compare them to the official ones pretty quick.

yay! That means Nintendo has opened up the market on Component cables. Anyone seen any Monster brand Component cables yet?

No, I haven't, but frankly, why would anybody buy Monster, unless you want to pay $$$ for a product that isn't demonstrably better in the real world...

Oh geez... Do we really need "Monster" cables? I mean, I guess it's ok if you arbitrarily paying more for the same exact thing.

I mean, if you like bottled water, i've got "PREMIUM" spring water to sell you. $3 for 20oz. It's crystal clear, pure, premium, spring water! Even the lable has gold color in it!

I read on another forum, from a Best Buy employee, that the "React" ($24.99) cables are going to be absolute crap. This could just be because they work at Best Buy and that's what they're programmed to say. I have my cables on backorder from Nintendo, but if these come out first I might buy them and give them a try, since I can always return them.

Slightly off topic, but I've gotten my third party S-Video cables from the Gamecube to "halfway" work with the Wii.  By halfway, I mean it only displays in B&W.

LOL.  Thanks for sharing your experience.  Now I know to avoid that one.  I guess I have to hold out for Nintendo to release official ones in America; that, or import them from Japan.

Whoa, it actually fit?

Somewhat.  The plug itself was flexible enough to go in without screwing up anything.  Keep in mind though it is a Pelican product.

Unless you construct a completely new plug such that luminance and chrominance conductors on the plug and the Wii console match up properly, black and white is the best you'll get.  So far, you only have luminance information.

Or hey, try experimenting by routing a piece of foil to the right conductors when you plug it in and probably destroy your Wii for the sake of science.

Joystiq has a link to another site that has the pinouts so you can make your own component cables...but it looks kind of iffy. And if you screw it up, you're not going to find any type of AV cables in stores to replace yours.

at least your BB's have something.  the ones near hear are completely cleaned out of anything Wii-related except for maybe 5 or 6 games.   no wiimotes, nunchuks, classic controllers, points cards or cables!

Hmmm, I think I'll pass on the tin foil.  It is tempting though.  I think I'm gonna keep a lookout for anyone who may have modded theirs to work.

I just got my Nintendo component cables today.  They're very nice, as far as Nintendo-cables go.  They're heavier and stronger than the GCN component cables, despite the same introductory price ($30).  It makes those "premium" double-priced 3rd party component cables seem like ripoffs, cuz you'd basically be paying more for extra cord length and heavy-duty EMF shielding.  If you DO happen to have nasty EMF's where you live that do degrade your picture, then I would say the premium cables are justified.

if you have really stronf EMF fields where you live, the quality of your wii video signal is probably the least of your concerns. I'd be more worried about the mutant tumour riddled babies that will feast on your brains in the night
