Title: USB Thumb Drives compatible with Wii?
Post by: trip1eX on November 18, 2006, 02:49:46 AM
Be nice if they were. Probably easier for most folks to transfer music and photos from their pc to their Wii.
Oh and how about networking. Can I transfer music and photos over the network to an sd card inserted into the Wii or to the built-in flash memory?
Some how I think the answer is no given that Nintendo is very cost conscious.

I thought at one point Nintendo suggested that you could connect any type of USB hardrive, but they'll probably code in some sort of a restriction so that only Nintendo(And Perlican, of course) branded USB drives work.

They confirmed the possibility of using USB-based media for storage, but never announced any actual support or products.
The safe answer is "no" for now, but we'll see what happens in the next year.

At this point the data manager only recognizes internal memory, SD cards, and GameCube cards. You can't even transfer saves from SD cards without connecting to the network first, so I guess there's some firmware update needed. They can likely update the firmware again if they want to make USB storage compatible.
