Title: What Virtual Console Game Will You Download on Launch Day ??
Post by: Martin Q. Blank on November 15, 2006, 04:34:00 PM
What virtual console game(s) will you be downloading on launch day?

The only game I will be downloading is Super Mario 64.  I need my Mario fix for Wii.  I hated the DS version, Mario 64 + analog stick = heaven.

I've still never received a clear answer, are N64 games on the Wii simply emulated, or do they get a boost in resolution & framerate?

At this point in time, nothing. There really isn't anything worth downloading in the first batch.
But IF I had to pick one, maybe Altered Beast.

Nintendo has said all Virtual Console games are direct ports of the originals nothing has been changed, infact I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the in game directions will be for the original controller and not the GameCube or Classic controller.

On launch day? None. I'm going to wait awhile, until the whole picture is clear, before I even start with virtual console games; the first of which will probably be Super Mario RPG assuming that's in the next group as hinted.

I might try Mario 64 just to see how the whole download process goes, but I do intend to replace my entire collection of NES, SNES and N64 games with Nintendo's new digital formats for preservation's sake.  I'm taking a gamble here and assuming in five years Nintendo won't switch the format and prevent you from using your old ROM files.

Edit: And by ROMs I mean the digital game files you can download with the Wii.  :p

By the way, any word on the Wii being able to download NES/SNES games to the DS?  It'would be a nifty feature, although fairly limited (Turn your DS off, and say bye bye to your progress).

Maybe Nintendo will be kind (Ha ha) and make an SD card receiver for the DS so that you can just access the Wii's data directly with the DS and take it with you (And maybe even manage it, etc).  This would also allow in a few years down the road for GameBoy, GameBoy Pocket, and maybe even GameBoy Advance games to be downloadable onto an SD card and played on the DS.  One can only hope.

I mean is it legal to suddenly say that you cannot play a game that you purchased.  It seems he was asking if Nintendo might suddenly change formats and prohibit the use of the purchased games.

If Super Mario World were an option, that'd be mine.  But Zelda or Donkey Kong would be a nice starter.

NES: Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong,

SNES:SimCity

N64: Super Mario 64  (have it for N64 and DS so must complete the package)

Sega Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Columns, Ecco the Dolphin, Gunstar Heroes, Space Harrier II, Toe Jam & Earl, Ristar,

TurboGrafx16: Bonk’s Adventure, Super Star Soldier, Victory Run, Bomberman ’93, Dungeon Explorer

These are all the games I will be downloading, as I have stated many times before VC is what interests me the most about Wii, the ONLY games I will be buying for Wii that are for Wii are Rampage and Zelda TP, so far they are the only two that interest me.

Well I will look at the Sega content for some buys but I really need to download Simon's Key. I started to play that a long time ago but it was a rental and had to be taken back so I never finished it. And the store never had it in again.

I think ill get quite a few VC games. I like the idea of having them all on one console, like a gaming jukebox so to speak.

It would be legal as you are only buying a licence for the game not the game itself.  In other words Nintendo can do what they want.

It seems possible to me that Nintendo will want us to rebuy our VC games on the next console...which would stink, but I definitely wouldn't count it out.

I'm interested in a couple of the Genesis/TG 16 games, but I don't know if I'll buy any. Toejam and Earl?  Gunstar Heroes?  Those are the ones that have my attention mostly.

"It would be legal as you are only buying a licence for the game not the game itself. In other words Nintendo can do what they want."

Translation: companies can and will f*ck you when it comes to buying things digitally.  Number one reason why when people suggest the idea of physical medium being completely phased out I shudder.  If Nintendo does that then just illegally download all the ROMs you paid for.  No one will think you're a bad person for doing so.

I question why some of you are re-buying games you already own.  What's the point?  Particularly with Legend of Zelda which odds are most of you have on the Zelda Collector's disc which will work on your backwards compatible Wii.  OMG I have to put the disc in the machine!  What a pain in the ass!

If I got a Wii at launch I would download Gunstar Heroes which I have never seen a physical cartridge of ever in my life.  It sticks out among the other ported-a-million-times-already titles that make up the rest of the VC launch lineup.  I have waited a long time to play that game on a TV with a real controller.

Well mister smarty pants Ian Sane, and I dont mean to be snappy but this time you asked for it.

First off I will always and i mean ALWAYS buy every single game that I enjoyed from Sega no matter how many times they repackage it, for several reasons. Also the same goes for NES games. DUDE you DO know that getting a working NES is not an easy task, nor is finding WORKING NES games.

THEN there is the fact that I don't know, some of these games are ULTRA RARE in cartridge format and thuis it is easier to get them here. As you stated Gunstar Heroes is one, so is Toe Jam and Earl, and Altered Beast As well as ALL teh TG-16 games, so NOT VERY MANY people actualyl have those so YEAH I see why peopel would want to download them.

THEN there is maybe the fact that you would like to reward teh company for making such great games buy purchasing a new copy when available so as to A. Keep the IP copyright protected so it doesnt lose its value, and B. to ensure the comnpanies longeviuty by contributing to thier profitability.

THEN there are those of us who support SEGA to the point we will buy every game they make over and over agian cuz we frikking feel like it.

Oh adn did i mention that The GC controller SUCKS for playing NES/SNES/TG16 and Genesis games. yeah but the classic controller is perect for it.

PLUS there are those classic gamers, like myself, who ONLY play classic games or seques to/games that are remeniscent of, those classic games.

Same reason why I will buy Midways Arcade Treasues every game systemj it gets published on, same reason I will buy Super Mario Bros every time it is re-released.

Also some of us actually have a conscience and do not like to do illegal things like DL Roms.

Again no disrespect man yo always been cool to me and I dont wanna piss yo  off but damn don't disj it if you can't take it. In other words dont f(&*ing insult me for my descicions when I dont insult you for yours.

Take it this way, why get an inferior GC game when you could get the Superior Wii game? (not that I feel that way but thats how I felt when you said what yous aid, liek i was dumb for making my descision.

I'm waiting for Zelda II and Faxandu on NES and then I will start getting VC games, ok maybe I will first get Zelda I and Super Mario 64.

I want Final Fantasy III/VI whatever you want to call it.  I guess its VI now since the real III came out on the DS.  But out of the first batch?  Probably the original Super Mario Bros.  I haven't played that game in years.

I would be beyond pissed off in Nintendo pulled a stunt like disabling all the VC games purchased in order to force people to buy them again. However, I don't see this happening and still doubt the legality of the act.

I have two copies of Legend of Zelda for the NES, the Animal Crossing version, Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition, AND the GBA port!  That's not stopping me from getting it again!

If Nintendo somehow disabled our VC games a class action lawsuit will be at hand.

Personally I think im only getting Gunstar Heroes at launch, but in the future I will be getting a lot of SNES games and some N64 games because I've since sold/gaveaway both systems.  Totally regretted it, even as far as to rebuy a N64 and a handful of games.

TurboGrafx-16:

If you want to do that, fine.  But I'm never going to understand that behaviour at all.  I wouldn't rebuy something I already own from my own mother, let alone a big corporation that doesn't care about me at all.  I'll download VC games I don't own yet but the ones I do I've bought once and as long as that copy works I see no reason to spend money on it again.  I reward a company for giving me a great product, not for trying to trick me into re-purchasing that which I already paid for.

Ian, they're not "tricking" you into re-buying a game just because they make it available for the umpteenth time.  It's certainly in a different format at least.

I would re-buy games, and willingly.  I would like to enjoy some NES, Super NES, and N64 games that I already have, even if I have to pay money for the convenience of having them there and not have to set up those consoles again.  I'm actually more likely to buy games I already have than those I didn't, which I'm sure to Ian is irrational.  But I would still buy games I didn't originally own, too.

Though I do think the price is on the high side.  If it was $2 or less for a NES game and they could guarantee every NES game ever made, I could see myself impulse-purchasing so much until I end up spending $1400 on all 700 games or so.  Now at $5 a NES game I'll be thinking about what purchases are worth it.

"I'm actually more likely to buy games I already have than those I didn't, which I'm sure to Ian is irrational."

See to me that, like buying endless cookie-cutter sequels, gives publishers the message that they don't have to do anything new because you'll gladly buy franchise games and in this case even literally the same game.  This bugged the sh!t out of me on the GBA.  In 2002 Metroid Fusion was the ONLY non-port first party GBA game released in North America.  People just went and bought ports of games they already owned and Ninendo responded by not releasing new content as long as they could get away with it.  Meanwhile my GBA was collecting dust as I waited for something new.  If you constantly re-buy games companies WILL take advantage of that and deny everyone else new content.  Nintendo already in their press release counted VC games as part of the launch lineup.  Buy games you missed out on or if your NES is on the fritz go ahead and rebuy games or hell if they include a new level and you want it go ahead.  But don't let publishers think they can get by on re-releases.  Force them to give us new stuff.  Nintendo will try to pass off VC games as relevent content during game droughts if you let them.

What's better?  The band that releases new albums or the one that just releases another repackaged greatest hits every few years?

I agree with you Ian.  To take it a step further, it's like the countless remakes of horror films over the past decade.  People keep going to see them, so Hollywood keeps churning them out.  The VC isn't quite as bad, only because they're classic games being re-released.  However I would expect Nintendo to at least offer a buy 3 get one free type of deal.  I mean, I'm all for the $5 NES games, but I can't help but notice how much of a treasure chest this hands over to the already almighty Nintendo.  Hey, at least throw us a bone.

All that being said, at this point in my life, I'm all about convenience.  And the most convenient way for me to play these games is to download them for a relatively small fee, even if I do own them.

Just like I did not buy Ace of Base CD's when I was 10, I also missed out on Sim City SNES.

...also...my NES only plays Dr. Mario now.

I'll GLADLY pay for GOOD GAMES if I don't have a working copy of them easily available.

not even, The game is cool based on the fact it stars two Hip-Hop savvy funkodelic aliens who jam out in the Funk Dimension. The game is all about FUNK man and thats the truth. George Clinton, the Time, Rick James, they would all endourse this game.

Plus itunes sells Ace of base songs dirt cheap (morheous/bearshare has em for free but...)
