Title: You can buy COMPONENT CABLES - ONLINE as of NOW
Post by: JonLeung on November 15, 2006, 04:06:05 AM
http://store.nintendo.com/componentvideocable
Forget those bogged-down phone lines.  Buy them online (if you're American or Canadian)!  I found that from the same GoNintendo topic.  It's not available through the Nintendo Online Store's search function just yet.

I already bought them this morning.  Over $50 Canadian, after expedited shipping and taxes.  I want these ASAP, two business days might already be rushing it, but at least they're on their way.  I wouldn't wait if you want them for launch.

Sweet.  Hope they don't wait to ship until after launch or something, like the did the GCN component cables.

Oh that is so welcome of you JonLeung, thank you, thank you, thank you very much.

...and I ordered them, expedited, and even if I only get them on Monday I'm fine with it becaise I can surely do with 1 day of only playing Wii Sports and playing around with the channels.

You are a scholar and a gentleman, Mr. Leung.

I checked for this last night, but nothing was showing up – must be a new thing this morning! Yay!

EDIT: Yow, site is slow as, um, a groggy sloth. I hope I don't get to the end and they say "Oops, it's sold out!! SOR-RY"
EDIT 2: Nope, we're all good

FYI

"OK, I just got off the phone with Nintendo (and again, it's amazing how nice and helpful everyone I have ever talked to at Nintendo has been). This guy said that they JUST got an update, and that even if your order says "Backordered" right now, the cable could still ship today or tomorrow. They were originally telling people if it said "Backordered" that it would definitely not ship until the 25th, but now that is not the case."

I ordered a set. 1 day shipping. I wanted to get 3(for my friends we were gonna go in on shipping) but it wont let you. So now all of us have to pay the $13.00 extortion shipping to hope we get them before Sunday. OH well.

Damn.  $30 cables, one day shipping, sales tax...

Almost $50 for a pair of cables.  They better get here in time for launch.

Can anybody that got the back order message tell me when they got it? Because I ordered mine a couple of hours ago (just about the time these backorders started coming in) but I don't think I got that message, or I didn't see it, which why I'm asking this.

On a separate subject, IGN pads itself on the back for Nintendo selling component cables online when it was GoNintendo that broke the "order by phone" story.

Nice got mine ordered. Guess I won't be getting them till Monday, no big deal. Sunday will be an Excite Truck, Wii Sports day anyhow. Glad that I'll be getting these basically on launch day, though, $38 is a swift kick in the nuts for some cables.

So anybody know for sure if there will be component cables in stores on Sunday? Mine is in backorder and if they're in stores I will buy them Sunday and cancel my order.

Edit: Never mind, just about 20 min from the last time I checked it changed to "preparing order". Reggie must have opened a can of whoop ass on whoever was responsible for the cable shortage.

Due to high demand, our initial allotment of the Wii Component Video Cables has been depleted. We expect to begin shipping again the week of November 28, 2006.

I ordered mine at 3:30pm EDT today, and while checking my order status, it said they were backordered.  So I shot them this email:

"Hello, I just recently put in an order for the Nintendo Wii Component video cables at around 3:30 EDT.  When I ordered, there was no notice of the cables being back ordered, and thus I paid for the one day shipping($13.00), expecting to get them before or on Sunday, November 19th.  However, now when I check my order status, it says that the cables are on back order.  Does this mean that I will not be getting my cables by launch day?  If so, I would like to cancel my order(or atleast change shipping methods).

Thanks for your time
Sean

p.s.
My order number is ......... with area code ....."

Hopefully they get back to me.

EDIT:
I called the 800 number and talked to a representitive.  He said that _all_ orders are on backorder, and that the surest way to see if you are getting them on time, would be to check your order tomarrow.  If it still says back ordered, then its backordered, however some will say shipped.  Heres hopping everyone here get's theres by sunday!

I ordered this morning at 10:30 ET and my account doesn't even show the order in the "Order Status" yet.

"You currently have no orders on file."

Ugh.

Well, they are ariving mid-december in stores.  So if I'm going to get it mid-december while paying 5 dollars shipping and handling, i might as well just cancel my order and buy it from a brick and mortar store.
Title: RE: You can buy COMPONENT CABLES - ONLINE as of NOW
Post by: KnowsNothing on November 15, 2006, 12:46:13 PM
That extra 5 bux is worth it for me not to have to go out to a store, wait in line, and deal with whatever crap they want to push on me.  Never mind the fact that the store could be out of stock when I go, forcing me to make yet another trip.

If it comes before December 5, well then that's just a nice bonus.

December?  Best Buy has them ready to go I think, if their display is any indication.

But I don't mind waiting too much.  It's good to know they're off my to do list.

Edit:  Status-Back ordered     *mudda fuqua!*

Do the component cables for Wii work on Gamecube?  I am betting NO, but I'm unsure of what to buy due to my ignorance in gear.

What are S-video cables?

Wii cables are not compatible with the GC, and vice versa.

S-Video. Usually that with standard composite connectors attached.

Hey wanted to thank u JonLeung, I ordered the cables this morning and forgot to post a thank u.  Oh and I ended up picking up MegaMan ZX, upon your good words and PGC's.

On another note, has anyone confirmed that the Component cables on Wii work with the GCN games running on Wii?  It would be annoying to have to hook up the A/V cables just to play GCN games on the Wii and switch back and forth.

The Wii component cables will work fine on GCN games in the Wii (they're just not compatible with the GCN system itself, as someone else asked).

Mine is shipping tomorrow. Sweet. Nintendo CSR's are the friendliest I've ever dealt with too.

Edit: Yeah, thanks for the heads-up Jon.

And you don't have to thank me, it was someone who posted on that GoNintendo topic about it, which I found in turn through Kairon's original phone-in topic.  Plus, you'll notice that I bought mine before saying anything.  :P

hmm, mine says back orderd as well.  Oh well I don't really mind waiting for them, as long as i get them before the year is over.  However I may wait to play Zelda TP after my school quarter ends which is mid December, that way i can devote myself to the game and use the cables too.

What in the hell are component cables? What do they do for your Wii? And what is S-Video? I know I could probably just look this up, but I'm lazy, and I'm sure SOMEONE is eager to show off their knowledge...

Easy answer for now-component cables will run in 480p, which looks better than the crappy composite hookups you get with the wii.
Title: RE: You can buy COMPONENT CABLES - ONLINE as of NOW
Post by: Nick DiMola on November 16, 2006, 01:57:04 AM
I think I am going to give Nintendo a call about my component cable order. I want to know what back ordered means in terms of days. I am leaving to go home for a week next tuesday (21st) for Thanksgiving, and I won't be home to get these if they get delivered to my apartment later than I had originally expected them to.

Not to be a d!ck but Nintendo could've just made a bunch of these and sold them in retail outlets from day 1 and the mass confusion they are dealing with now would've never existed, plus I'd have my god damned component cables on Sunday rather than whenever the hell I am going to get them.

EDIT: Just got off the phone with a Nintendo rep and he told me that even though my order currently says backordered, I still may get it on time because quite often people enter wrong credit card information. The orders then get put on hold until the situation is rectified and in the mean time the next person in line gets shipped their cables. He did say that most likely I wouldn't be getting the cables until November 30th which is horsesh!t.

In a nutshell, component cables are high-end cables that send color and brightness information in 3 separate channels, resulting in a much better image on your TV. Your TV must have component inputs on the back to use these cables. Most TVs don't. They are identified by their Red-Blue-Green color. (Component cable picture) This cable also displays video games in all their 60 fields per second glory.

S-video cables are one step under component, but still very nice. Color and brightness information is sent through 2 separate channels on this cable. Your TV must have an S-video input to use S-video cables. (picture of an S-video cable)

Composite cables -- the classic Red/Yellow/White cables most people are familiar with -- transmit all image data through one channel (the yellow wire) which creates an adequate but not spectacular picture. This is the most commonly used cable.

Hope this helps.

 UPDATE:

So we payed the extra $ for 1 day shipping for nothing? Nice; they should give us a refund if the people that got 2-day shipping get it faster or at the same time as the people that got overnight shipping.

Are there actually going to be 3rd party cables at launch?  I'll get the Nintendo ones eventually, but if I can buy the 3rd party ones right away, I'll go with those at first.  In fact, if they do okay, I'm going to worry about 1st party cables.  What 3rd parties are making component cables for the Wii?

Thanks, BigJim, that was really really helpful.

I'm really surprised, though. All of you have HD TV's? That's ridiculous...

EDIT: Are S-Video cable compatible TV's rare? I bought my TV last Thanksgiving but it doesn't look like I could plug in an S-Video Cable. I have the regular "Antenna" plug in and another that says "Coaxial"(whatever that is) that's colored orange.

My status is also on "preparing order", it was like that only now this morning. I checked if I could cancel my order, just in case, and I can't because the cancel button is no longer apparent so that might mean that I/we will get our cables next week. However I will still make a call to verify this, because if I'm on "preparing order" and the cables are only sent after the 28th then why can't I cancel my order.

Is it still "preparing order" for you Caliban? Cause mine still are, its been over 48 hours like that and I'm pretty pissed. At this point they should give us free shipping (I got the 1 day UPS red). And if they say they won't ship till the 28th, they better be free or something. I'm gonna call'em right now.

BTW Big Jim, when did you place your order?
Title: RE: You can buy COMPONENT CABLES - ONLINE as of NOW
Post by: Caliban on November 17, 2006, 06:12:17 AM
BigJim, what a lucky guy.

Jin-X, yup they're still on "preparing order", as long as I get them next week I'm not worried.

Even though I am certain that I will not have my cables by today, I will still play Zelda on launch day, or any other game for that matter.
Title: RE: You can buy COMPONENT CABLES - ONLINE as of NOW
Post by: KnowsNothing on November 17, 2006, 06:22:39 AM
Yeah, I've come to terms with the fact that I'll be cable-less for launch.  I've never used component cables before, so I'll survive.

I've been wondering this for a while though, can you still play widescreen without the component cables?
Title: RE:You can buy COMPONENT CABLES - ONLINE as of NOW
Post by: Jin-X on November 17, 2006, 06:26:23 AM
Yes you can play widescreen with any cables, its just an aspect ratio, the connection you use has no bearing on it.

BTW Caliban, do you live outside the 48 mainland states? Because I live in Puerto Rico and the cynic in me says they're giving priority to the "core" US over Alaska, Hawaii and the US territories.

Well maybe my theory on the shipments has some merit; does anybody outside the US mainland has their component cables, or at least have they been shipped?
Title: RE:You can buy COMPONENT CABLES - ONLINE as of NOW
Post by: Jin-X on November 17, 2006, 10:15:37 AM
Got off the phone with a Nintendo rep and basically he wasn't exactly sure why they haven't shipped other than they've had so many orders that when the truck comes in they just pack in as much as they can and then wait for the next one (so our cables may be the unlucky ones, unless they're prioritizing the US shipments like I suspect). He said they really should ship today and get here Monday (I have 1 day shipping) and if it just so happens they don't ship today, that we can ask for a Player's Guide (weak) to make up the shipping cost (I would suggest trying to coerce them into giving us something a little more substantial if the worst case scenario happens).

I was at Nintendo's Redmond HQ today.  They only had a total of 30 Component Cables for employees, and those were gone almost instantly.  No word on an S-Video cable (which I really need).  No one said they weren't making one, just that it wasn't available.

Your shipping date can be checked on Nintendo.com, go to your "view My Nintendo" and then click on "My Orders", on the same horizontal space as the cable order and under your order number there should be a link "View details", and then just read your shipment date.
