Title: Xbox 360 and HD, framerate problems?
Post by: GoldenPhoenix on November 12, 2006, 01:07:15 PM
Just recently I was playing Godfather on Xbox 360, and noticed that whenever I played the game on 1080i (my TV does not do 720p) the framerate starts to chug a bit more. So lately whenever I play the game, I play using 480p because the framerate is smoother. My question is if this is a common sacrifice for many other Xbox 360 games? I know Gears of War doesn't seem to have the problem, or even Dead Rising but what about others?

I've noticed that it seems to be a problem for certain games.  Quake IV is unplayable in any resolution other than 480i, for example.  I've noticed some games are more likely to have missing texture bugs and pop-in with the VGA cable at my TV's native resolution (ED).

I'm guessing that it's just typical first-gen game bugginess.  Most of the A-list games have no issues at higher resolutions, and I'm guessing as people learn the tricks of the trade and have more time to spend on optimization you'll see less and less of this.

Well it really depends on how the game was programmed. Also a TV that can handle 1080i should handle 720p with no problem at all.

Yeah, for some reason 360 games run slightly slower and are also DARKER in 1080i on my TV...That's why I just keep my system in 480p, which is good enough as it is...

Yeah well mine doesn't, it was a budget priced Samsung TV from a year ago (It cost 420$ and was a 27inch). It isn't even widescreen, it has a good picture though even if it only does 1080i and stretches the image (I use the widescreen function on my TV for 1080i since the stretching bothers me). Like Bill though, I play most of my games in 480p and they still look good with no or minimal jaggies (well I take that back NBA 2k7 had jaggies in 480p) which is one reason why I'm not that concerned about Wii's 480 p visuals!

Not sure if it's just on my TV, but I noticed in the Saint's Row commercials, a couple (or more) of the scenes they chose to show had pretty choppy framerates.  Was kind of surprising to think they'd pick those in particular to air when they looked rather sluggish, at least in my opinion...  Anyone confirm/deny a problem in that game?

The game is pretty sluggish framerate wise, but it is definately playable. Heck I liked the demo version and that framerate was much worse.

The game runs choppy in some places in higher resolutions, just like on the PC. Quake 4 is completely playable and any resolution, there are some parts where the framerate takes a hit, and it can be a pretty big one at that, but the game is still totally playable.

Don't lose faith though, Gears of War runs pretty damn solidly (not completely), same with Call of Duty 3, and those are 2 absolutely graphically intense games.
