That's just a stupid placeholder for either 1) pre-"Wii Sports is bundled" announcement, or 2) used games.
I imagine they could sell it seperately, but my money is on the former.

For the same reason that Super Mario Bros. was sold by itself...
What that reason is, I don't know for sure. A few guesses could be for if the game breaks, if the player wants a full-on case/manual with the game (e.g., collectors), or for when they stop bundling it. I think the last reason is the most probable. They aren't going to bundle Wii Sports forever, so they need to give future buyers options. If they released it later, then Wii Sports would be a "new release" months after it was first availible.
Side note: When a game is bundled with a system, does it count as an official "sale"? I have heard that the U.S. does not have any accurate/independent game sale records, but I heard that Japan does. Will every Wii sale count as a Wii Sports sale?

I don't think it would, mainly because I remember a Super Mario Sunshine bundle that was released in the US wasn't counted in the games sales in the NPD, just the hardware sales.

It says PAL on the box... are other areas of the world besides Japan possibly not getting it sold with the system?
Or maybe they sold it by itself for those fanatics who have to have theirs in a DVD case as opposed to the cardboard insert that it comes in?

I am not sure about Nintendo but I do know that SEGA never counts bundled software in their number of units sold. That is why it is so difficult getting accurate numbers for Sega software because they had so many bundles. But it doesnt surprise me they would sell it seperatley because they won't likely want to sell it as a bundle forever cuz eventualy they will wanna make profit on the game itself.

The controller packaging reminds me of sony's mini digital video cassete tapes.

If someone wants to buy a Wii secondhand, and the seller doesn't include Wii Sports.

It's because eventually the wii will drop in price and will drop wii sports.

Yeah, I'd bet Wii Sports would be replaced with either Warioware Smooth Moves(Unlikely) or Mario Galaxy(more than likely). That'll allow them to keep a $250 price tag for atleast another year.

I see they are still using that horrible plastic packaging that is impossible to get open (even with a good sharp pair of scissors its a pain). Of course they would never want us to actually have the ability to get to our controllers, HEAVEN FORBID!
Otherwise, it looks cool.

Yes, the Wiimote + Nunchuk included in the Wii console itself will be merely soft plastic-wrapped...
