Title: Wii and Southpark
Post by: zakkiel on November 01, 2006, 04:36:42 PM
Tonight's episode features Cartman so desperate to get the Nintendo Wii that he freezes himself in the Rockies to make the time go by faster.

I can relate.

Doubtful. Trey & Matt, aren't influenced by money. This was probably their way of saying that the Wii is cool and will stand proudly alongside the XBox 360 at South Park Studios once it's released on November 19th.

Hopefully, Wii will do better than the last system showcased on South Park.

I totally know how Cartman feels...

Wii cannot come any faster...

It's interesting how suddenly this season the South Park universe has real video games instead of the fictional franchises like Chinpokomon and the Okama Gamesphere.

That actually made me laugh aloud, reading that.  Southpark's a good show, but I don't have a TV in the room to watch it on.

I can definitely relate to the sentiment, though.

I hear the episode is up on Youtube.com and gonintendo has the link on their site. But you could just bittorrent it next time and watch the show just after the east coast air time.

Didn't South Park also have an episode about the PSP, claiming that God Himself made it?

Well I think that the consoles were the main focus on those.  In this one it really seems like Evolution is taking the stage and some disturbing sex stuff I could have lived without.  The Wii just seems like a vehicle for that story.  The Wii could have been replaced with him wanting a robot manservant from the future and it wouldn't have to change any.

Yeah. The episode itself was about the controversy surrounding the Terry Schiavo case, with Kenny being the victim. The episode also dealt with a battle between Heaven and Hell (if I am not mistaken). Kenny kept playing the PSP throughout the whole episode.

I just realized that the appearance of these consoles doesn't necessarily mean that they are celebrating them. South Park has always been about the ridicule of social traits, world events and fads. When they stated that the PSP was a gift from God, I wouldn't be surprised if the writers were making fun of the fanboys that saw the PSP as the end all of handhelds.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Cartman's anticipation of the Wii is also a mockery on the pre-hype regarding the Wii. I heard that Matt Stone and Trey Parker are BIG Nintendo fans, but even then, I wouldn't be surprised if mockery came first, celebration later.

Hell, I know a couple of friends who are acting similar to Cartman, one of them stating that the Wii was the only thing he was looking forward to in his life. So Cartman's representation of Wii fanboys isn't far from the truth.

Man this episode was AWESOME. I don't have cable so couldn't watch it until I "acquired" it this morning. My brother called me last night though after watching it and told me I'm totally Cartman in this episode. I didn't know what the hell he was talking about, but after watching it, I am Cartman. I can't do anything but think about the Wii. I sit at game stores just staring at the Wii boxes. But we only have 2 weeks so I'm sure it'll be in my living room before I know it.

First Adultswim, now Southpark...

The Wii has just hit the two most popular 'casual' gamer networks. This is great FREE publicity, especailly since it comes out in less than 3 weeks! What makes it even better is that it will be featured on the next episode of SouthPark as well (due to the "to be continued"). If I know Cartman, he's going to keep bringing it up the entirety of the next episode until he actually plays the damn thing.

the best part of it is when he's in the future and someone tells him its primitive technology and he goes "primitive? it has motion sensing technology as$hole!"

It is in Japan and from what I've heard it not exactly flying off the shelves in Europe either.

By the way, this episode was disgusting. I really could've done without the whole Ms. Garrison XXX scenes.

And don't be surprised if the next episode whren Cartman finally get to play the Wii, he says something like "this blows and wasn't worth the trouble". I just don't see it ending well, but that ending probably seems too obvious, so hopefully that isn't what happens.

I don't see that happening. I think Cartman will react the same way he did when he finally got to Casa Bonita. If Trey and Matt are big Nintendo fans they won't be dissing the console in any of the episodes, well at least that's what I think.

The episode itself was funny, I could too would had left those XXX scenes of Garrison, but oh well. And I know  I might be wrong but is Cartman really dead?, dreaming?

I thought the South Park writers didn't know anything about video games?

I remember hearing about how they created a game character named Mega Mega Man, and at the time they didn't know that there already is a game character named Mega Man.  Seriously, WTF, they never heard of Mega Man?

Though I suppose they could be trying to keep up and throwing around the names of known consoles is easy enough, or they could've gotten some help or other writers or something.  Still...who DOESN'T know Mega Man?  >_<

I haven't seen it, but it could really go either way with that show.  I figure that as long as Kyle doesn't have one, Cartman will praise it religiously.  Of course, it would be hard for anything to be worth that much trouble, from the sounds of it.

Are they going to show this episode again before the second part airs?

It would have been good minus the feces and all the sex scenes.  I'm somewhat scarred now.

In order for something to fail, there has to have been some intention of success. Microsoft never had a shot at Japan.

You are attributing way, way too much subtlety to South Park. This is the first season where they haven't beaten you over the head with the point at the end of every episode. Also, Matt and Trey have reputedly expressed how anxious they are to get the Wii.

Saw this last night, pretty funny stuff, I can relate to Cartman.  Also saw that creepy PS3 commercial during one of the breaks.  I thought it was more offensive than Ms Garrison's xxx scenes!

To me, South Park has ALWAYS been about subtle political and social commentary. True, they create some of the most shocking and outrageous humor out there, but once you look past the humor you will find a depth not seen in other shows. These are the same people that have shunned Family Guy for being nothing but jokes, jokes and jokes interrupting the story. Clearly, Matt and Trey want some depth in their shows.

They have dealt with hypocrisy in society and politic, dissected the double standards of religion and just made fun of pop culture in general.

Heck, even Team America World Police feature this kind of writing.

So once again, while everything is dressed in outrageous and even sick humor there us a subtle commentary to all the episodes in South Park.

But I am derailing the thread here...

Oh boy.

This is a show in which they take a stance (usually predictable in advance) spend the show beating the hell out of it in the most obvious ways and then, in case you are a true moron and still managed to miss the point, batter the hell out of it by having a character (usually Kyle or Stan) directly state their message (which, when stripped of its comic trappings, is usually either incredibly cliche or stunning stupid) to the audience at the end. I applaud this season for at least dropping that last bit.

I have seen South Park make a subtle point once. It was the episode where Cartman got disciplined by Ceasar the Dog Wheesperer. It provided a neat bit on insight into Mrs. Cartman's character.

The amount of $$$$ that MS spent in Japan alone means that they thought they had a chance at some point.

No Wii for Cartman.
