Title: Got Final Fantasy XII
Post by: Pryopizm on October 31, 2006, 07:06:29 PM
The only reason I stopped playing is because the AC is broken and the living room got suffocatingly hot.
Otherwise, I love this game so much!
Pale, if you read this, drop FF XI and go pick up FF XII, it plays like XI but without all the crappy waiting for a balanced party.

Bah, anyone who rips on Final Fantasy 1) either hates JRPG's 2) just hates Final Fantasy for unkown (but probably stupid) reasons, or 3) is a punk
This is a well crafted game that moves smoothly and is just gorgeous to look at. I'm only a few hours in, but so far I've been able to complete a couple hunts for bounties and start off a major quest. And I haven't even mentioned the beauty that is the opening of the game. As far as the presentation, this is the best written Final Fantasy to date, and--without a doubt--Square's CG work simply gets better and better (and there's plenty of it).
And I'm also not sure what SmashBros was complaining about, either. The fights are very easy to handle, and starting off an attack can be as simple as pressing the X button twice.
I doubt many others here are going to play it, but I'm damn sure I'll get plenty of negative reaction about it. Whatever. Provide me some comedy, guys. Rip on a game you haven't played!

While I don't think I'll ever get myself to quit XI, I'm trying so hard to not pick this game up right now. I've got so much other stuff to play.
There are so many people that hate on FF just because they think it makes them cooler that it isn't even funny. It kind of makes me sick. You are the second person to tell me how awesome this game is. I trust you and my buddy at work much more than I trust random forumers.

When you reach a point where every last game in the genre attempts to be one of the worst examples - that being FF7 - I no longer need to play your sh*t.

Yeah, you have no damn clue what you're talking about Strell. FF VII and VIII are easily the weakest in the series, but IX and X are nothing like them. And Final Fantasy XII has about as much in common with FF7 as a toaster has with a rock.
But continue, so far your ignorance is my pleasure!

And therein lies the problem.
Pale, I don't see how "trust" factors into this. At the very least, look at some of the concerns others had, and see if they would bother you. If they don't, good for you!

Excessive cut scenes annoy me, the less the better for me. Whether it was the many inane interruptions in Golden Sun or the 'Yuna is laughing by the sea' scene from FFX. I like to learn the story from individual conversations or the environment itself, through books or the like. A J-rpg with Resident Evil 4 / Shenmue type quick time event cut scenes and more interactive battles would be the ultimate.

CG is not a problem. If you want pure visceral gameplay with zero story, then yes, FF is not for you. However, FF XII doesn't have a ton of long, long cut scenes barging in the gameplay.
Not only that, but all Square's cutscenes were not CG. Mostly they were short scenes lasting a minute or less. This game has gorgeous CG more frequently than in other Square games. The introduction of the game is fairly long, but it's not obscenely long by any standards. In fact, with the voice acting, action, and music, it's actually quite good.
Nice thing though, if you don't like cutscenes, you can skip them. So, please, more "concerns", please! I want to knock them down like bowling pins.

I love the battle system in FFXII. I kept thinking, this is what FFXI should have been like, then that one would have been fun.
Yeah you can skip the cut scenes, but the only way I found to PAUSE them were to open the disc drive. This same thing was wrong with VP 2: Silmeria. Sometimes during a long scene I have something I have to go do, and sitting through a long scene that is long for the sake of being long, is very ANNOYING!
I like the gambits, like you can have one character always cast say protect on the party so you always have that status, or to remove poison. Gambits are like the best thing to happen in a RPG for a while! =D

There aren't as many cutscenes in FFXII compared to previous FF's such as FFX.
You could always skip them if they are that much of a problem.

My only gripe with the game is that you could play it on a NES controller because they chose to relegate even the most basic commands to a menu.
Imagine playing Battalion Wars and having to open a menu to start attacking an enemy even though there were plenty of buttons open which could have been mapped as attack.
Hell, I'm playing Contact right now and even Suda 51 had the common sense to make it so, when you finish attacking an enemy, you automatically start attacking the next enemy which is attacking you and the attack command is mapped to the B button.
I don't care how good the story is: a sloppy interface warrants a few points off.

Less Cut Scenes. Thats good news to me. I am annoyed by many cutscenes. I want to watch them all but I hate having them over and over and over again. If my PS2 worked after hearing them I might have picked it up. Now I'll get it when at bargain price and the PS2 is clearanced.

I still want to pause them with start, not get a X to skip when I hit start. PAUSE DAMMIT!
I can pause a movie at any part, not just the boring or non-climatic-epic-event parts. So why can't I pause a cut scene in a game?

Nitsu: You mean "why can't I pause in FF12" because you can pause cutscenes in Star Ocean TTEOT and Xenosaga 2 very well.
I like story as long as it's not some stupidly clicheed crap Final Fantasy tends to serve up and I like gameplay more than story.

People would still hate on it since a perceived bad design would end up being a perceived bad design -- on a different console. This is by seeing we've got active multi-console owners who discuss the same issues.

That game is harsh. 12 level dungeons with no save areas and zillions of random battles is rough going.

Yes, yours was much better, really.
The fact that you can't see that they all star prepubescent man women running around with a big artifact trying to stop the world from being destroyed, all while painting themselves up in a lot of useless cutscenes, doesn't bode well for you. I imagine you thought X-2 was a great game as well.

It kept on playing and had a skip with "x" in the bottom corner. Again to be fair I only tired this once and it was a early cut scene. But still I should have been able to pause it.

FFVIII in my opinion is the least "Final Fantasy" game in the series. Leveling up was so broken it was easy. I mean 1000 exp per level. I had Squall at level 100 right after the Fire Cave part and before the next part of the game. That was like at the very beginning of the game.
I didn't get the Ultimeca part. It just seemed to come out of nowhere. It could have been mentioned, but it just seemed to me that it was thrown in at the last minute because Square decided that Edea wasn't going to be evil.
I like FFVII more that FFVIII and I hate FVII.
I did like the draw and junction part, but I didn't like that for some of the GF's you just drew them out of bosses, like Tiamat and the GF that it held. I like to fight them because it make me feel like I accomplished something.

I was referring to the post above me. The one that said the original was the best. That game is harsh. There's plenty of chances to save in FF XII, though I do begrudge them not having an auto-save system like FF XI had (by necessity, of course)
And as far as FF VIII goes...the plot was secondary. The point of the story was a terrible romance that couldn't have had two characters with less depth and chemistry. However, I loved the junctioning system, I loved drawing magic to increase my stats, and I loved the limit breaks. LionHeart makes me giggle like a little girl every time.
And Strell, I hope you continue trolling this thread, it really adds so much to the conversation. Aso, it's totally not against the forum rules and I'm sure no one would enforce them even if they were.

Yes, but Final Fantasy 8 required only 1000 points to get to level 2, to then get to level 3 and then for each level until 100. Not an increasing amount like 1000 then 2000 or anything like that. each level required only an individual amount of 1000 points to level up. That's just too easy.

Because it proves (at leat to me) that Final Fantasy 11 should have been a seperate game in the FF universe and not a numbered part of the series. And FF12 shows that FF11 could have been offline and made a better game for it.
I played FF11 for like 4 months before cancelling because it was nothing but an exercise in frustration. There was not a goddamn thing in the game that was 100% neccessary for the game to be online only. It could have also been offline, becuase of the fact that you can play it solo, so why should I have to be online to play solo when the only online part was the auction house and seeing other people run around, which is neither good or bad, it got in the way more than anything. too busy.
ff11 could have been offline and everything about the game would have been better.

I have to agree. Things would have been more balanced, crafting for the love of Mike I made the highest thing I could a hundred time why do I still have no ranks, plus finding a party and then following the person consistently is annoying in FF11. I enjoyed what they were trying to do but from my experience unless they seriously borked FFXII, from what I'm hearing they didn't, it be a better gig for me. If you have dedicated friends to play with FF11 is much different.

Leveling up in FFXII is similar to FFXI, the amount of exp you get is small and you get money by selling loot you get after battle (you do occassionaly get gil as a battle reward), but the battle system is fun, and if you go through an area killing the same kind of monster over and over again your chain kill goes up and after like 18 or 19 kills your loot starts to become multiple loot, where instead of just one iten you can get two of the same kind or two differrent items. The highest I got was like 28 or 29 then my guest party member went after a different species of monster and broke my chain. But I did rack up a lot of loot to sell, and since you get around 1 LP (license points) per kill, if you go after chains you can rack up LP too, it takes a while, but enemies do respawn rather quickly.

Unfortunately for YUO, leveling up in FFVIII would cause the enemies on the overworld and the bosses to level up as well. The easiest way to beat the game is to get really good at drawing, then vacating the battle post haste. If you can be level 5 at the final boss with all the spells, you'll cream her.
