Title: OOT Greatest game of all time!!!
Post by: Zach on October 22, 2006, 01:18:11 PM
IGN made a list from their readers of the 100 greatest games of all time, and look what grabbed NUMBER ONE!
Edit: We could've figured that one out without IGN, now couldn't we?

Last year it was the original Super Mario Bros..
EDIT: That was the IGN Editors one, this is the Readers' Choice one - I think OoT was on top last year too.

Not my pick, but it seems to be the overall consensus from the most sources.
What is REALLY impressive, though, is that ALL of the top 5 are on Nintendo systems, 3 of them made by Nintendo. And a full 7 of the top 10 and half the top 30 are Nintendo games.

RE4 can be good and all but theres no way is better than Super Metroid, these people are WRONG!
On the other hand, a top 10 without FF is ok in my book.

That's a pretty shaky list if you ask me. What's with SMB looking up at all the forgettable sports titles on the early part? Or Smackdown Vs. Raw 2006 being conspicuously listed higher than the original Zelda? Don't get me wrong, it's the best puroresu game of this generation... but this is zelda we're talking about.
I don't think OOT would be in my personal top 10 of all time... I know I'm in the minority here, but I preferred Majora's Mask with all its side quests.

This list was based purely on game ownership, right? So yeah, such a great way to make a Top-whatever list... =|

No, people voted on what they thought was best.
There are some questionable choices...but Ocarina of Time being the greatest videogame of all time is inarguable. The fact that it continues to top these kind of lists means that maybe there is some hope for humanity, after all.

Get out, Chaos Theory is one notch above Mario 64.. Ratchet and Clank one above SSBM... both versions of MGS2 are on there.. 4 ports of American football are on there.. these things just don't work

You can go to Gamerankings.com, Ocarina of Time has always been #1. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a magazine or website that didn't say it was the greatest game of all time.

This was based on ratings of the games. You can rate all games on IGN in your account on a scale of 1 to 10. These are the top rated games, not ownership.

It's hugely arguable... with games like LoZ: MM, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Perfect Dark out there, it's arguable whether it was even the best game on it's own particular platform.

It gets no argument with me, especially when compared to with Majora's Mask .

Perfect Dark? Mario Kart 64? Pfft.
Mario 64 and Majora's Mask at least are in the same ballpark. I'd allow an argument between a person who thought Mario 64 was the second greatest game of all time, and a person who thought Majora's Mask was.
...Though that wouldn't really an argument I'd like to participate in. I can compare the best entry in one particular series to the best entry of another particular series....so, I'd be comfortable in saying, for example, that Ocarina of Time (the greatest Zelda game) is better than Mario 64 (the greatest Mario game.) But comparing, like, SMB2 to the Adventure of Link? How can you really say which one sucks worse?

I didn't like OOT that much. The camera got on my nerves (wish there was a way to manually adjust it without moving your character around) and the difficulty ramp was more like a steep cliff (because you don't learn to use the melee system before having to deal with a stalfos or two at once and by then you have to be very good at it to get any hits in), some puzzles are really unobvious (cellar of the wood temple, for example, who noticed you're supposed to push those things in that direction? I was stuck on that till I looked it up on GameFAQs*) and that central field is way too large, you spend minutes repeatedly hitting A to roll across the field and if you're trying to get into hyrule city and it's night you have to wait for quite some time until the gate opens again. That plus the loose feel of the game's physics made it much less enjoyable than Wind Waker to me.
*= Expecting the user to know something is pushable is a Zelda staple, I didn't realize otherwise unmovable blocks are occassionally pushablie in the 2d Zeldas (namely Link's Awakening) until I finally looked into a walkthrough, too.

I hate top 100 lists no matter what they are covering. How can you look at the entire scope of gaming and choose the top 100 games? You are spanning generations of games and naturally when doing such, it is easy to overlook games that were truly great years ago. Not to mention this particular list is based on reviews done by gamers on their own lists, which just strikes me as useless.
If they really wanted to make a top 100 list they wouldn't group all games into 1 lumped category. Each game fits a particular category and could be ranked against other games in that category (Ex: RPG vs. other RPGs), and even that still isn't efficient enough to really showcase all of the great games that have come out over time.

This is more like the IMDB Top 100 than anything else.

I would have voted Mario 64 for top 100 games number 1.
This list is interesting, but it is also more of a popularity test.
When Next Generation Magizine was still around they did a top 100 story that was really interesting. They explained reasons for games being on the list and they treated series as a single game as not to over populate the list with 3 Mario games. I wish I still have that article because it was a brilliant read.
In that one Tetris was the greatest game, followed by Super Mario 64...and I would agree completely with that.

There is no greatest game of all time, only a greatest gamer!
This is like declaring something the best sport of all time.

A Nintendo game always tops every attempt to make a best games list.
I've seen The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario 64, and Super Metroid at the top of several lists that I can recall. Zelda games always crowd up the lists too, mostly deservably (I think Majora's Mask should usually be higher than it usually is, though).
On a related note, I hear Famitsu's only given perfect scores to five games, including Ocarina Of Time, Wind Waker, and the various Nintendogs games together. Sure, there's Soul Calibur (DC) and Vagrant Story (PSX) but Nintendo being the developer and the maker of the hardware that the game is on for three out of five is pretty good.
It really makes me wonder why there are Nintendo haters at all.
*high-fives all the Nintendo fans*

And considering FF12 deserves more like a 10/40 going by all the complaints by the players that makes any 40/40 rating given out afterwards void.
Title: RE:OOT Greatest game of all time!!!

But my point still stands...Nintendo makes great games, and they are still recognized as doing so.
So I still don't understand why there are Nintendo haters. Nintendo's games might not be everyone's cup of tea, I suppose, but that's not a reason to HATE them.

As one of the few people who played OOT after Wind Waker, I can honestly say it deserves its accolades. Even 7 years after it came out. The game is good even when technology has passed it by.

Games based on fan input are useless because most people don't know sh!t. For a lot of people the best game they've ever played is the last game they ever played. This goes for anything. I remember MuchMusic doing a "best videos of all time" list on New Year's Day like ten years ago (back when they, you know, played music videos) and since it was voted by the viewers literally 9/10 of the top ten entries where from the current year. Few people bother to look into classic stuff. Hell when they're under 20 most people forget about stuff they liked only a year ago as if it never existed in the first place.
Ocarina of Time is one of the best games ever though. I personally prefer Link's Awakening DX and Super Mario RPG but if I was stuck on an island with only one game to play Ocarina of Time wouldn't be a bad choice.

F* that list. People are insane.
As for OOT being the best game of all time. F* that sh!t too. Mario will always top that spot. No other game is so highly loved by everyone you talk to. OOT has a few people here and there that didn't like it as much as most people do, but Mario...especially the ORIGINAL Mario has never had a single complaint. A legion of fans were formed off of this one game.
Hell, I can still waste a night playing through all the levels again.

Or so we hope...but sales may be divided between GameCube and Wii versions. They may have to count their sales together, despite being on different consoles. Most of the time people seem to count combined sales for each generation of Pokémon and the various versions of Nintendogs, but at least those are on the same system... EDIT: I wonder if anyone combines sales of Pokémon: Mystery Dungeon?
But yeah, Nintendo's said that Twilight Princess will be better than Ocarina Of Time a few times already. Ocarina Of Time may not be my favourite game (I think I like A Link To The Past better) but it'll certainly be a feat that I welcome its attempt, and if it gets as much recognition as Ocarina Of Time or more... o_0
Again, Nintendo-haters are dumb.

This is 100% true. The original Super Mario Bros is the only game that I have ever been entranced by - I have yet to get the feeling I did while playing it in any other game since. That game started it all, and will probably never be dethroned as my favourite game. Mario 64 came close to evoking the same emotion, but even that game couldn't..
In fact, all the Mario games (save SMB2) are among my top 10. Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 are just amazing, and every one of them is better than Ocarina of Time. Though OoT is my favourite Zelda ever, followed by A Link to the Past..

Best game ever is Super Mario World, I don't care what you say.
The rest of my list isn't really in any order, but it goes something like this: - Ocarina of Time - Super Mario Brothers - Link's Awakening - Super Metroid - Metroid Prime - Super Smash Brothers Melee - Mario Kart 64 (or super circuit, can't decide) - other stuff, mostly if not all nintendo

Interesting. I always thought that the 100 greatest games list should be done top ten overall games, and then top five or ten of the best in each category of games. Then you get a better understanding of the best games ever.
Personally the best 2D platformer or really any platformer game ever created is:
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island It is brilliant and is only close to being beat by Mario World. Super Mario Brothers 3 is good, but the levels are too short and although varied often times do not feel complete.
As for the greatest Zelda game created, I still place that to Link of the Past, which is so easy to pick up and play I have beaten the game 5-6 times loving the game each time I played.
What I really loved about this list was going through and checking how many Nintendo games are actually in the top 100. It is incredible. They have one of the best track records of any developers.

I've never been able to really get into LttP. As far as 2D Zelda games go, I like Link's Awakening better. To me, the gameplay feels smoother, and the world is more appealing.

Just ran the numbers.
2006 Reader Top 100 games of all time: 31% of the games are published by Nintendo.
That is a huge number of games. However, that is also gaming fanboys that will vote for most popular games and not the best.
So lets look at the Editors picks:
2005 IGN Editors Picks for Top 100 Games of all time 19% are published by Nintendo.
Both of those numbers are really staggering, and I believe the Editors picks stat is even more amazing, because they were pulling out some crazy obscure games.
