Title: Wii Marketing (wishful thinking)
Post by: WalkingTheCow on October 22, 2006, 01:33:26 AM
Imagine seeing this as a television spot.

I bet it'd work like a charm. (although it's certainly a bit sexist. . . and completely not in Nintendo's style.)

That said, we have less than a month to go! Where's the media blitz? I'm well aware of the great press the Wii is getting but if Nintendo is serious about this whole thing about grabing the nongamer and expanding the market, they need to hit the old standbys of television and billboards and I just havn't seen it yet.

Oh don't worry I'm sure the marketing will come soon, I predict it will start early November. Nintendo does not have the finances to back a marketing blitz before then, and really I think it would be a waste since the last two weeks or so are pivotal. It is pretty safe to say that Wii will sell out on launch day, so marketing it not needed for that, what will be key is between launch day and Christmas when they actually have systems to go around. As of now they can rely on the great media coverage to at least place the idea in people's heads, which will be pounded in when they start their own advertising blitz.

I remember reading about how both Nintendo and Sony don't expect to spend a lot of money on marketing as they expect that they will sell out of their new consoles on launch day and for awhile after.  There's been at least enough hype that I don't think their reasoning is altogether wrong.

That said, I was a bit surprised when I read that a Japanese person, seeing a Japanese Wii advert, had only then just seen the Wii remote for the first time, and said "how can you play complicated games like RPGs on that thing?"  Well, first of all, most RPGs really only need a cancel and accept button, and next of all, the guy's been living under a rock if he plays games but somehow didn't know about the Wii at all until recently.  So, yes, you're going to get some out-of-the-loop gamers like him as well as new potential gamers with advertising - their dollars are as good as anybody else's - but why spend any money to get their money when enough hardcore gamers will snatch every Wii available this Christmas?

I can't see the video above, as it's somehow flagged as inappropriate (I don't feel like making an account just to sign in to view it), so I'm pretty sure it's not Nintendo's style.

I remember seeing some advertisements before movies, like one for Donkey Kong 64, the "School's Out" Who Are You commercial, and one for Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.  I never saw the ones that were made for theaters actually in theaters, like the ones for Perfect Dark or Metroid Prime, but then again I don't go to movies often enough.  Despite the fact that the movie industry keeps saying they're in a slump, I've always liked the idea of movie ads because it can reach non-gamers and unlike TV advertisements, they can't be tuned out.

place some Zelda: TP ads in movie theaters, and follow that advertisement with a quick rundown of other holiday titles for the Wii -> Red Steel, Madden, Excitetruck, and WiiSports. Nothing far too casual, though.

It's the G4 Wii vs. PS3 ad again.

As for the discussion, I think Nintendo is going to go 100% casual in their marketing. All of the web ads indicate this to be the case and I don't think they'll need help marketing to the existing gamer.

That ad is stupid and kind of goes against what Nintendo is trying to do, but whatever.

A valid point, really. It just might not be important for Nintendo to do major advertising yet when the hardcore will take care of the first few months. Nintendo will have plenty of Wiis ready for owners early next year so a marketing blitz starting early next year might not be a terrible idea. That being said, I've got this fanboyish, selfish desire that more people realize the PS3's got some company THIS year.

A "bit" is kind of an understatement. Anyway the G4 ad is not really something I would like to see represent Nintendo, and I could picture this thing getting very annoying if they pushed it heavily on TV.
