Title: IGN PS3 Hands-on
Post by: Ceric on October 13, 2006, 02:31:12 PM
Did anybody else read this?
I did. It's an interesting read in a way. Just so you know I won't kid anyone by saying that these guys are anywhere near objective overall. Though the controller thing was interesting. It seems that by their report Sony just keeps stealing ideas.
Oh also they have a picture of a guy whose a roughly 20 or so feet off playing the PS3 with the wireless controller. I wonder if they realize thats that not nearly as impressive anymore because IGN has a Wavebird picture where the person is always across the IGN Cubical farm and his head looks the size of a pin.
Though Flush buttons are cool.
"The Story" Edit: The correct link is down below. I'm going to keep this here so that Pale and I don't look funny.

I don't get how anyone can find it attractive. It's just SO badly designed.

Why is the story a commercial for burger king? Am I missing a joke?

Oops... No that was my bad... I thought I had copied the one for IGN. So when I pasted it in I didn't look and the link must have been what I had on my clipboard... On a related note I do find that amusing.

For a second I thought they were releasing that Burger King stalking game on the ps3. Sadly it is just guys talking about the design. The system is huge and not really "sexy." This seems to be said just because they need to say something good. Put this design next to Wii and it would be laughed at.
I am glad they at least admit that the ps3 controller is a joke. They use the same design as the first ps and expect everyone to lap it up. While usable it doesn't compare to any of the other controllers for comfort or ease of use. The left analog is also still on the bottom! (although they don't bring it up.)

I never liked the Playstation controller, and it sounds like they've made it even worse now.

Makes the Wii's 60$ control set not seem too bad if you compare quality and price. Sounds like Sony went cheap all the way and I wouldn't be surprised if the controllers end up breaking sooner than they should.

"The sausage enhances the biscuitiness. The biscuit enhances the sausaginess." "I get it, Biscuit Sausage." "No! SAUSAGE BISCUIT!"

the massivity of the system outright disgusts me.
hasn't every other technology been getting smaller? my cell phone is a pocket pc and more powerful the first computer I owned, yet is smaller than the numeric pad on the keyboard... Only HDTV's have the right to keep getting bigger.

Quote (...)the PS3's impressive form factor is only the tip of the machine's unerring ability to stun the crowds(...)
of course it's impressive, it has done what everyone thought was impossible......being bigger than an XBox....
Quote what happens when you stick a DVD, PS1 or PS2 disc in the machine?

I'll poke around IGN. It's obviously been a few years (at least three years, I'm sure I was in the dorms.) Seeing the ps3 sort of raw pictures I could live maybe even like the design if it wasn't for the shinyness. The fingerprints and how it reflected what was behind it. It only makes it look bigger and weird.

Nice, Thanks IceCold.
Oh and seriously wtf is up with the fingerprints and weird @ss reflections in the PS3, don't they have a guy to clean it every few minutes?

Darn you... You posted that while I was writing my other post and didn't look above me... So I found the information as well and came in here to find that it was already posted... Well I'm still going to post the picture just because.

Quote The fingerprints and how it reflected what was behind it. It only makes it look bigger and weird.
The convex shape of the system also makes it look bigger. I'm not sure why they'd want that - maybe they think the system should look as imposing as possible. They've certainly succeeded on that front - the system is about as inviting as a megaton bomb.
Other thoughts:
The thing looks worse in person than it does in the publicity shots. Maybe it looks better when it's vertical.
With this design Sony is making it clear they're banking everything on familiarity and brand loyalty. Maybe this is a brilliant marketing strategy, but it does nothing for me personally. A new console excites me because it's new. Reusing the ps2 controller means there's one less thing about the console that I can get excited about. Same goes for the Spiderman logo.
...I really can't stand the Spiderman logo. The ps2 logo exuded confidence: it said 'we're so sure you will want this system, we don't even have to tell you it's name.' The ps3 logo says 'not only do we have to tell you the system's name to ensure sales, we have to use a font from a popular movie. We're that desperate.'
The touch-sensitive buttons sound cool, though.

When I see a PS3, I see an Atari 2600 that just gave up on life and became a shut-in.
"Atari 2600? Open the door! This is your mother speaking!"
"Don't look at me! *sound of glass breaking* I said, never look at me!"
Also, I'm assuming the system is so large because it has to be able to handle an antifreeze tank and intake system. Or something. Heck, I don't know. This requires a closer look...hmmm...
HEY! That's no PS3! It's an Easy Bake Oven!

The curve is probably their for airflow reason.

Or it's a design decision to prevent you from stacking equipment on top of it and have it stand as "the king of your entertainment center". Similar to the reason given for the XBox 360's stupid shape, "it's inhaling" (aka it sucks). They could just have made it rectangular (even if it's by making the edges bigger rather than the bump smaller) but they chose not to.

That is true. But I think at that point it look more like an XBox. Also I didn't realize this originally but by going with a slot load mechanism Sony has effectively preventive the little top loaders you can get for the PS2 from working. Hence hindering import game sales.

Inhaling fills you up with air, causing you to expand...

Take a deep breath. DEEPER. Where did your gut go? IN.
OKAY.

Well, technically a proper deep breath doesn't involve sucking in (and playing trombone requires one to think way too much about breathing), but most people when taking a deep breath will shrug their shoulders and suck their gut in.
ANYWAY, it is accepted that the concave design of the 360 is inhaling, deal with it.

The only thing I accept about the 360 design is that it's pretty stupid looking.

The 360 isn't inhaling...I've never heard it called that. No on takes a deep breath by sucking their stomach in, you can't do it! The motion is the puffing of the chest, not the sucking of the stomach. The 360 is concaved, not inhaled.

I remember hearing once that the xbox was an "exhale" due to its convex shape and the 360 is an "inhale" due to its concavity. Pretty retarded if you ask me. But I do like the 360 design regardless.

Some microsoft PR droid saids that. But yes you're right, it doesn't suck, it blows :p.

Even if the 360 was not concave in nature you wouldn't be able to stack it because of heat issues. Melted discs go!
