Title: Wii-serves
Post by: Supermoose on October 10, 2006, 02:12:18 AM
All Gamestops and EB games are going to be taking reserves today at 10 o'clock when they open. Finally!!

Are you sure about that? Everything I've read seems to indicate that GameStop and EB Games will only be taking pre-orders for the PS3 today ($100 minimum down) for the 8 or fewer systems each store will be receiving. Furthermore, they are guaranteeing that a pre-order will ensure a PS3 on launch day. Not that I care either way.
It looks like Wii pre-orders begin next week at GameStop/EB Games

Friday, actually, is when Wii pre-orders begin. But who needs to pre-order when there will be so many systems available at launch?

When Nintendo confirms the numbers that have been suggested by "analysts" then I'll believe it.

I have reason to believe that the number of Wiis on launch day is going to be pretty good, but not mind-blowing.
I've learned that the retail chain I work for (Fred Meyers) knows exactly how many (already recieved?!) Wiis the company is getting FOR LAUNCH DAY. 5,000. That's going to be divided between 130 stores which comes to nearly 40 units for each store. We got about 20 Xbox 360s on launch day, so this is certainly an improvement, but I'm betting the big difference is going to be the run to Christmas. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas my store got about five 360s! So there is a lot of room for Nintendo to make a big difference.

I've never had a problem buying on launch day. I don't expect one this time.

I called my GameStop up and they are not yet taking pre-orders. I really hope that Friday is correct. If so, I could probably convince my mom to put a reserve in for me (because some of us are still in school).

I don't know but i thought the $100 down was to reserve your spot in line, and if you don't show you don't get your PS3.

I think the whole point is to reserve a specific system so you don't have to wait in line and can pick up the system at your leisure.

Shaolin, you are right. Putting the money down holds your place in line not the system, so it says in an email sent to GS stores.
Sorry it took me so long to post back...I work at GS and was told by my boss that reserves were going to be available...he was also misinformed...sorry to cause so much mayhem.

Well went in today to pay off my PS3 reserve and I was given a similar deal for reservation with Wii where they charged 50$ to a gift card and kept the card so I will get my preorder the moment they are able to fill them!

How early should a person get to the store if they want to get a reserve in? An hour before opening? More?
This is pretty exciting for me. The only time I tried to get a console at launch was the DS, but reserves were plentiful for it (plus my local Target received a bunch of them).

I'm getting up on friday at 8:30 to get to Gamestop by 9.
Ain't no way I'm missing this...

I'm gonna skip the EB/GS wii-orders.
I'd first like to completely exhaust any hope of pre-ordering from any local game stores I could find in the yellow pages, from Toys 'R Us, from Sam Goodies, from FYE's, and as a last ditch resort Game Crazy.
I appreciate that GameStop is not forcing us to order a bundle (though I want so many games that a bundle would have no effect on me), BUT I am rejecting them for forcing Hawaiian gamers to trade-in games and other stuff for their pre-orders for Wii and PS3.
...last resort, I'm lining up at midnight anywhere but at a GameStop/EB.

When does your GameStop open?
This is the perfect setup for me. I just happen to have Friday off of school, and my mom never has to work on Fridays. So I can wait outside at GameStop while she goes to the bookstore and other close stores.

Ah, I might be wrong on the opening time, but I know the folks there so I might drop by the night before to double check.

Smash you should see if you can preorder early like me if you know them. After reading a bit more there appeared to be others in a similar situation like me and the reason for them being able to go early before anyone else was because they are "preferred" customers which some managers (or maybe even all) are allowed to do.

Hmm... No offense, but that seems a little dicey to me.
Here's how it works from the intel I've gathered. EB/Gamestop gets 2 slots reserved for use by the employees and the registers only allow preorders to be rung after open 10am on the day they start taking them. When I got to EB for the PS3 I was forth in line, but my receipt showed that I was the 6th transaction for the day. The clerk was also a few minutes late in opening. So what I think they did was make their sales first.
The whole scheme outlined in the quotes above is essentialy like slipping the clerk cash, so that he can preorder in one of the two employee slots when the store opens. However there's no agreement that he has to give you the preorder. He could just keep the preorder himself. In fact if he cons a few people in this way he could get his system paid for. When Gamestop PS3 preorder slips are going for ~$2000 on ebay already, I'd make sure you get that slip.
I hope it works out, but just saying... buyer beware.

DIRK SMASH PUNY GAMESTOP.
Seriously. Why can't they just start the online pre-orders tomorrow too? The Wii is going to be my birthday gift, and my dad/mom/aunt/uncle/whatever are hardly going to stand in line overnight to get it.

Shecky my PS3 preorder is in the system (in fact I paid it off just the other day). I guess I could ask tomorrow or something what my preorder number is, but I really am not that concerned, I trust the people at my local gamestop (the manager knew about both my preorder transactions).
