How long has it been out?

that's pretty good considering it's competition. DBZ and dynasty warriors are awesome! and that ENIX game sounds interesting too.

What a big difference between American and Japenese gamers, jeez.  649,000 debut for Dynasty Warrior 4!?  40,500 for Metroid?

Well, metroid is a FPS, and that alone should not have anyone expecting stellar sales in Japan.  The metroid name will help it sell more than most FPS games in Japan, but I doubt it will ever top 200,000

Metroid has never sold well in Japan, added to the fact that they turned it into a FPS type, wich sell even worse in Japan means it wont sell really well.

Hmmm . . . I'm rather surprised by Metroid Prime's solid debut.  To my understanding, Perfect Dark and Halo both sold only 50,000-60,000 copies total. . . at this rate, Prime will probably be one of the best-selling first-person shooters of all time in Japan.

The original Metroid sold about one million copies in Japan.  That number pales in comparison to the sales that the Zelda and Mario series racked up during the Famicom era, but nevertheless it would be more appropriate to say that Metroid has historically donebetter in North America than Japan.  While it would have been unrealistic to expect Prime to sell one million copies under any circumstances in Japan, I think that the first-person perspective will probably hinder sales more than the liscense.

oh well, i mean 3 playstation 2 debuts man!
Metroid can't compete with that!
Well, as long as Metroid eventually reaches over 100k it should be good.
Also, its not a normal first person shooter, with different controls it might get over with the Japanese crowd.

It is really difficult to make ANYTHING that appeals to both American and Japanese consumers. The cultures and tastes are so differant that it is hard to bridge the gap. I think this relates well to one of Nintendos biggest problems, that is they are trying to sell to many Japanese style products in an American market.
On a side note. I was in Nagano for the Olympics a few years back and I will tell you this, I couldnt wait to get the hell out of Japan. I just couldnt stand it there. It was nice to look at, but other than that, it sucked big time.

Not at all difficult. But its usually Japanese (especially Nintendo) who achieve that.
Games that sell incredibly anywhere....

Mario
Zelda
Final Fantasy
Resident Evil
DMC
Pokemon
MGS2...

Have they fixed that N64 like draw distance/graphics yet? I have played number 3 and it was not bad, not something I would call a system seller, hell I would not buy it (Played at friends place) as there are too many flaws with it. Many with graphics as in poor enviroments, low polygon models, walls of fog. Sheep like A.I. Lack of abilty to issuse commands to troops. Most of the charaters having similiar/same moves. Flawed two player VS. Fun Co-op though, if you do not lose your partner. Something like this would not get far on the cube in it's current form IMO. But the Japanese seem to dig it.

Actually, it's about Chinese people, but thanks for playing.

Metroid Prime selling 40k copies in 3 days isn't too shabby.

Well, the encouraging part is that many people bought Fusion, so maybe they'll be wooed by the connectivity aspect?

Fusion is Japan's third best selling handheld game (behind FFTA and Pokemon R/S), isn't it?

Well I have to say that I'm impressed. I figured Metroid would sell 40,000 or 50,000 copies in a year. Selling 40,500 in 3 days is very impressive. Prime may actually break 100,000 in Japan. Before I saw that sales numbers I never would have thought it possible. I could get used to surprises like this.

Japanese people like weird games. . . Metroid Prime doesn't appeal to them like it does American gamers, plus it's American made, which they seem somewhat reluctant to get (look at Xbox figures).

"the japanese dont realy like metroid games. i am surprised it sold more than 40k."

They like Metroid more than THAT. But this sales chart is obviously for MP's first week in Japan- how long does the chart have MP on for?

Well to answer your question, someone correct me if I'm wrong, Metroid Prime was released on 2/28 in Japan. Thats the three day sales total for MP.

WRONG. As some one who knows a little bit of the Japanese culture i can assure you that nowadays the Japanese LOVE the American culture. Moving away from the gaming industry Do you see them wandering around wearing "Japan is cool" shirts? no. You see them wearing USA t-shirts and it is by far the most coolest thing in the world to own an American made car. But you may say that thats not the gaming business, The truth is Japanese people dont often by crap, which, Microsofts Xbox, i'snt up to standard with the PS2 and Gamecube.
