Title: Sony is Winning the Handheld War, Proof Inside!
Post by: Artimus on September 22, 2006, 12:09:26 PM
Quote “I think obviously our competition, the handheld devices from Nintendo and specifically in the case of the DS, we really feel like they’re appealing to the same audience that Game Boy has always appealed to. And if you look at the adoption rate of the DS over the first 17 months, not only does it trail the PSP but it also trails their other platforms… They’re potentially losing some of their core audience and they’re not really expanding beyond that and we think we’re expanding into a completely new audience as we did with PlayStation. And we’ll do just what we did on PlayStation; we’ll dip down to the younger consumer eventually and we’ll ultimately appeal to that vastly Earth wide audience we carved out with the original PlayStation.” - Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Executive VP Jack Tretton
I totally agree.

Sony is winning the handheld war in my pants, when I went to their mom's house last night.

Actually I know they are winning because last night I seen some guy get NFL 2k7 for PSP, obvious proof that PSP is live and kicking since someone openly bought a game for it!

Wandering's picture really clears things up for me. It's funny because I was in EB Games today and the clerk brought out the book, with all the games that are coming out in the future for the PSP, and the customer spent about 1 minute looking through the book, closed it and said, "Man there is nothing but crap coming out for this system." At that point I grinned walked out the door and left.

So let me get this straight... you walked out the door... AND THEN YOU LEFT?
Your honor! This statement is clearly contradictory!

I got it straight from GoNintendo, so I imagine he did say it. Very, very amusing.

Here are some reactions to Sony's TGS conference..
Quote Sony finished off with a little finger-wagging at the development community: "why so many sequels", Ken asked, having demo'ed Ridge Racer SEVEN, Virtua Fighter FIVE, Mobile Suit Gundam SIX (at least, if I'm not wrong) and Final Fantasy THIRTEEN. Innovation will come from users, or the power of the network, or by returning game designers to the creative process instead of having them out there photographing cars and landscapes for the next racing game.
Quote During the keynote, the DS pictochat room that had fallen silent sprang to life as bored attendees decided to entertain themselves, since it was clear that Ken Kutaragi had no intention of doing so. After the keynote, we head the words "meltdown," "total disaster," and "trainwreck" bandied about the press room. This keynote was worse -- way worse -- than Sony's E3 showing.

He didn't say those DS comments at the keynote though, I'm sure of it.

Oh the irony. Sony pretty much saying that they hate themselves and the only reason they are still in the console business is because of the fans. Soon that will be fixed too. The batteries where just a test. Soon the exploding PS3 will make the whole news. Taking out whole households at a time. Then coo will begin...
Sony is doing terrible right now it seems.

Don't you realize, by selling more units the DS is losing the war and their market, the PSP on the other hand hand by selling less and losing UMD support has managed to expand the market and gain dominance.

What is this phantom adoption rate he's speaking of? I doubt he just pulled it out of his ass, but I'd love to see what factual piece of info he's putting this kind of spin on.
Is the point he's making is that there was no previous audience for PlayStation in a portable format, as one didn't exist, so that's how they're "expanding" beyond their core demographic?

Quote if you look at the adoption rate of the DS over the first 17 months
First 17 months... that would be until April 2006. He's probably talking about the North American market - from a month after the PSP launch to about that time of the year, the DS and PSP were selling around the same in this region. The DS still had a higher "adoption rate" since it launched a few months before the PSP. Until April, the DS was ahead by a few hundred thousand.
Then Mario and the DS Lite came.. and the rest is history.
EDIT: He also conveniently left out the PSP's horrible software tie-in ratio. A larger userbase means nothing if the owners don't buy games for the system, and the PSP is suffering from devastatingly small software sales. In the end, developers don't care how much hardware is sold, but how much software is. The DS, with its focus on games, is doing much better in this regard - I remember reading that it sold more software in one month than the PSP did in a year or something..

Chew on this. In Japan, The DS has sold more HARDWARE units than the PSP has sold SOFTWARE units. That's devastation.

Word for word.
"So let me get this straight... you walked out the door... AND THEN YOU LEFT?

OBJECTION! ... but then I have no case so I lose. Damn.

You certainly could have walked out the door for other reasons. Like to get your DS, which you had left in your car, to use the DS Download Station or to show the fellow shopper. But no, you were clarifying your intentions! You walked out the door and left because you had no further bussiness to do!

EXCEPT
He said 'and left', not 'then left'. Implying they happened at the same time, which, if he was walking out the door...THEY DID.
CASE CLOSE

No need for a blatant PSP flame thread. Nothing good can come of this.
