Post by: Artimus on September 16, 2006, 07:01:40 PM
Anyone else giving serious thought to this? Buy it and get a free controller...sounds kind of neat. And I LOVE tabel tennis/hockey.

Yeah i'd definately buy this to get a new controller. Hockey does look worth the price by itself

Hockey?!?! Oh, right, air hockey..
It does look pretty good - I might just pick it up. Just a note, the air hockey minigame in Super Monkey Ball DS is great..

bundled with a controller, what're they going to charge, $100 for it?
Title: RE: WiiPlay
Post by: Artimus on September 16, 2006, 08:45:10 PM
The controller comes free, or the game does. I forget which. Basically they're tech demos so there's no development cost to recoup. I forget what the cost is in Japan (whether it's game or controller price) but you're not paying more, one of the two is free.

Sort of like when Sega was bundling NiGHTs with the "3D Controller" and a lot of stores were selling the bundle for the same price as the controller by itselv.
I ended up with a lot of extra copies of NiGHTs because of that

Is this a Japan thing, or is this coming to the US?

It's coming out in Japan and Euroland right now...The U.S. is the only one left out!

Nope, the only games confirmed for launch here are Wii Sports and Zelda.

It's not really duck hunt, there is no duck or that d@mn dog, but it does have the clay shooting. Still awesome though because it is multiplayer. I know i would waste a lot of time on that game. Actually now that i think of it my whole family would love WiiPlay. Parents loves ping pong & fishing, Sisters love duck hunt, and well i see all of those mini games enjoyable.
I bet even if this wasn't bundled with the controller the sales for this game in Japan would still be huge.

Damn, why can't this come to America. I'm sure it'll retail for 50 bucks and you get the controller. I plan on spending 40 on the Wiimote as it is, may as well get another game along with it for a measly 10 bucks. I demand Reggie goes to Japan and tell Nintendo HQ to start sending copies to America ... or else.

If ping-pong still sucks as much as it apparently did at E3, I'm not sure I'd want it to come over for fear it'll taint people's impressions of the controller....
On the other hand, duck hunt....

Its more than just tech demos...they are multiplayer parlor games...this can be extremely addictive and fun.
When I buy my second controller I am getting it with WiiPlay so that I get alittle more bang with my buck...and basically that is what Nintendo wants to do. Nintendo wants the second controller to feel let a better deal. Everyone needs 2 controllers with a system...not everyone needs four.
Oh and if they price it the same as they did in Japan, you actually get the game and controller for cheaper than the single controller. I don't understand it either.

If they don't release in north-america, and if there truly is no JAP/USA region lock, import get!
Title: RE:WiiPlay
Post by: Spak-Spang on September 18, 2006, 06:32:10 AM
There is no way Nintendo of America would be stupid enough not to release WiiPlay in the US...are they?
The US Nintendo event left details out of the speech...I hope this is one of those details left out, because I think this would be the smartest means to make getting a second controller look like a better deal.
As it is, I am waiting and watching for bundle deals and such. This will be my first console I don't preorder, because I want to get the best deal...and I am picking it up at 12:00am on November 19th...so I have to find stores that WILL be open late.

Screw Duck Hunt. I want HOGAN'S ALLEY. Hell, I'd settle for the NES version on the virtual console as long as I can use the Wii pointer!

Post by: JonLeung on September 19, 2006, 09:03:54 AM
My first two hands-on experiences with the WiiPointer at E3 were for the tech demos "Obstacle Course" and the ping pong game. If these are in WiiPlay, I definitely want it if only to relive those moments.

Wait... if WiiPlay is included with controllers at launch...
...and everyone buys three more controllers at launch (since everyone is going to, judging by the number of people bitching about having to spend an extra $120 at launch)...
...then does that mean we're all going to end up with tons of WiiPlay floating around?
Title: RE: WiiPlay
Post by: Spak-Spang on September 19, 2006, 10:22:03 AM
UncleBob: Not exactly. You buy WiiPlay and it comes with a free WiiPointer. Or if you want to look at it...it is a special packaged deal.
I personally think this is great as I mentioned before.
We also don't know if they are done tweaking those games available for WiiPlay or if any others will be added last minute. The important thing is that they are multiplayer and fun...because Nintendo needs to get multiplayer madness going on the Wii ASAP.
Title: RE: WiiPlay
Post by: UncleBob on September 19, 2006, 10:32:08 AM
It was my understanding that you buy a controller + Wii Play for the regular price of a controller (in Japan, at least)... is this not right?
Title: RE:WiiPlay
Post by: Kairon on September 19, 2006, 10:44:59 AM
For comparion, most games in Japan will be priced at 5800 yen, which would be roughly equivalent to our 50 dollar range. Wii Sports will cost 4800 yen.

I've been playing around with this, and the shooting range minigame is just awesome. On my third try I got a platinum medal (603 points).. It's such a great ego boost - it really makes you think, "Damn I'm good.."
This is mainly due to the pinpoint precision and amazing speed you can shoot with. They are by far the best shooting controls I have ever experienced. When you pop two ducks with one bullet while juggling three cans in the air, it makes you feel all warm inside.
The cursor looks very similar to the star one in Mario Galaxy - I'm sure it'll have the same accuracy.. can't wait!

Been playin' around a little bit, but haven't passed the bubble game as of yet. I got bored and tried to just click + and quit to move on but apparently you have to keep playing until you actually lose enough bubbles or something. Anyways so far the only one I've REALLY enjoyed was the shooting, but I'm not even half way through yet.

I really like Hockey/Pong too, now that I've gotten to it. The only ones I can say that I really like are shooting, hockey, and tanks. The cow one's alright but over way too soon.

How many levels does Tanks have?
Title: RE: WiiPlay
Post by: trip1eX on February 17, 2007, 02:00:17 PM
I would give it a 9 easy. But I factor in price too. It's $10.
The SP game ain't going to have you playing it for too long, but it's also one of those games that imo you pull out for a quick fix occasionally. MP will always remain fun because of the timeless core gameplay in most of the games.
OH did I say it's $10.

This should have been better. It's pretty boring. I wish they included real duck hunt.

MLS_man, apparently tanks has 20 levels to get the highest medal... but after you beat that, you can play for up to 100 levels total (crazay!). I'm having a hard time with those dang light turquoise tanks.
trip1eX, you've got it right when you mention the $10 thing. For the amount of gameplay that's included, this game is totally recommended for $10.

20 levels only nets you a gold medal (or do you have to go through them without dying to get platinum?).
Turquoise? What did those do again?
I got through all twenty levels with little difficulty by firing three round bursts with slight spread at enemies while reserving a few shots for point defense.

Anyone else find shooting a lot easier on 4:3? I played it at my gfs house with her 4:3 tv and when I got back to my house with a 16:9 I haven't been able to get a platinum. I got platinum my first try on the 4:3. Is it something to do with our respective sensitivity settings with the remote you think?

I'll have your extra controller!
Title: RE: WiiPlay
Post by: decoyman on February 18, 2007, 10:32:32 AM
Actually, I think I meant just plain green ones, KDR... they're the stationary tanks which fire fast shells that ricochet all over the place. I don't see how they manage to hit me sometimes. The level with 6 of them placed all over the place was pretty frantic:P
And yeah, you only get gold for beating those first 20... I don't know if it's without dying that nets you the platinum or what, but I'm gonna try for it as soon as I get a chance! Too fun:P

Post by: KDR_11k on February 18, 2007, 07:46:14 PM
Hm, I don't actually remember how I dealt with those tanks... I think I used cover heavily, blasting them through walls when possible (drop a mine near the wall) and shot their shots when they fired.
Title: RE: WiiPlay
Post by: decoyman on February 19, 2007, 09:24:39 AM
Exactly, that's how I did it too. There's a lot of strategy in this simple little game.
I also love the art direction in the game. It's like a little toybox, and the sound effects are spot on. The little whistles to count up how many tanks you destroyed are awesome I think someone compared it to Geometry Wars, and I see some similarities... but I prefer Tanks' style. Almost reminds me of something by Aardman.

You know, in light of NWR's review score for this game, I think there should be a new category added (it's already in reviews for accessories, so it's not totally out of the blue):
VALUE
Is this game a 4.5 at the $50 pricetag? Totally. Is it a 4.5 at $10? At least I don't think so.

You know, I don't trust most reviews of this game. Heck, I'm not sure I can even trust my own opinion of this game (not that I've played it yet). WiiSports was given a lot of fairly negative reviews too, and everyone knows how immensely popular it's become.
I think I've been a video game enthusiast for so long that I just can't fully appreciate simple (dare I say elegant?) fare like WiiPlay. My opinions on what makes a game "great" have been affected by decade or so of toggling through weapons, adjusting the camera, and quarter-circle, back, back low punches.
