Some of my favorite parts was when she sounded so astounded by all the buttons the N64 had.
COmments about the revolutionary controller and how NIntendo hopes it will force developers to create new experiences (Sound familiar?)
Those hilariously bad Zelda OOT build shots.

Wow, that's actually pretty cool. Can you imagine what it must have been like at the time to see a game running in real-time 3D? No, forget that - what it would have been like to PLAY it? And when you think about it, the 64 really DID have buttons everywhere - before the 64, who would have thought of using a button underneath where your finger rests? There's some pretty mindblowing stuff in that video when you think about it.

I remember that and it was pretty crazy. Here in Vancouver the PNE had a Nintendo display the August before the N64 launch. I had never even heard of Super Mario 64 at the time so seeing that and then trying it out just blew my mind. It was so out there that I couldn't even figure out what to do when playing. I kept pressing the camera buttons because I expected them to make Mario do something. Shortly afterwards I bought an issue of Gamepro with their E3 1996 coverage and just soaked in the information. Now that the internet provides us with info instantly I could never duplicate that feeling of just walking into a booth at a fair and seeing something totally unexpected. Back then even if you followed games you were always on a couple month delay because of magazine limitations so you could end up seeing something big at the arcade or in a store or in a commercial.

geez i was like ten when the 64 came out i think... i cant believe i was that young. i remember i didnt really know about it until i saw it at the toy r us one day after its release.
before that i remember a cousin who was older by a year or two telling me about how they were making a "SNES 2"and showing me how weird the controller looked from a magazine he had. i thought the controller looked stupid and didnt pay it any mind because it didnt even look like it could of been a succesor (in my mind, at the time) to my precious snes. i was floored when i first saw mario 64 playing...
i ran up to the demo unit and wrapped my hands around the controller (left hand in the middle prong, not that stupid reaching over all the way from the left bs) and moved the analoug stick and was blown away by how it controlled. i remembered the level being the first bowser level. i fell off the stage a few time before i adapted to the controls. i was in aw. i could make him go from tip-toeing, to regular walking, to sprinting with such ease in only a few minutes after playing. to see him crawl and do all those crazy new acrobatics was nuts. the level was huge, i had never before experienced anything like that.
man, thats a great memory for me... after i played it i knew i had to own it.
edit: ha i just remembered: did anyone else have trouble with the Z trigger when they first got their hands on the controller? i wasnt used to having a button under my finger like that so i kept pressing it and made mario duck every other second

I am with Ian on that experience, I too bought a magazine (forgot which one maybe EGM) in order to see the inside scoop on the N64. In fact I think I still have it somewhere, I'd have to look, it is so cool going back and reading about things like the N64 when it was the hot thing. In addition to that the feeling I got when I first put my hands on Mario 64 in the local Toys R Us has NEVER been duplicated, that was a jaw dropping experience. I was so impressed with N64 I was willing to just buy the console and look at it lol (Yes I know pretty sad), and get Mario 64 when I had the money.

I remember going to Sears with my mom and playing the Mario 64 10 second demo over and over and over and over ... and over. I loved it so much. There was no experience for me quite like the N64. Though the game list wasn't enormous there were soooo many great games. Hopefully Nintendo can make me feel this way again with the Wii.

I had already read a bit about Super Mario 64 in Nintendo Power before I saw it in a local game store. They had an imported N64, and I ran around in Big Boo's Haunt, perplexed by the Japanese, yet still figuring out how to take out the Boos. What really wowed me, though, was when I finally took home an N64 of my own, bought from that same store before they turned anti-Nintendo and ticked me off, and saw the snowy plains of Hoth go by. The snowspeeder was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen, and it was so fluid. My dad walked in and teasingly said, "Wow what awesome graphics!" I just sat there slackjawed for a moment, then said, "You have no idea how right you are." I didn't experience that feeling again until the rebels once again needed me to pilot a snowspeeder in Rogue Leader. I fear I'll never feel that way again.
It took me a little while to get used to 3D games. I had killer neck pain from subconsciously straining to look around corners because the camera in Super Mario 64 would never face the right direction.

"My dad walked in and teasingly said, 'Wow what awesome graphics!'"
The first time my Dad ever saw an N64 game he said "why's it so damn blocky?" Way to ruin the mood there, Dad.

Interesting timing for this thread; the 64 turns 10 on the 29th (North America).

Wow, that Zelda footage looked like they were making Legos The Legend of Zelda. That was funny.

The feeling I got from playing Super Mario 64 for the first time was the only thing that even comes close to how I felt when I played the original SMB (my first videogame ever).. Amazing.

I remember playing the Demo so much, that I already knew how to collect 12 Stars Before I even owned the game.

yay! N64 memories.
I was 13 I think at the time, my dad bought me the console out of nowhere, I had no idea about it and I didn't ask for it, Ive heard people talking about it but I knew no details at all. He just appeared with it so I was more curious than excited, since I didn't know anything about it. We rented Mario 64 and I was just blown away when I started playing it, we later went to buy the game, but couldn't find it anywhere so I ended up buying Doom 64, and later starfox 64, the games were too expensive so I didn't get another one until Ocarina. I finished Mario 64 by renting it and I didn't get a copy of the game until this year (a bit late). Those were good times, even though I wanted much more games but we just couldn't afford them..

Man.
Now I see where you get it from.
On the subject of the actual topic, all I remember is getting it for Christmas. I'd seen it at TRU and was shocked. Of course I'd followed it via Nintendo Power, but seeing it running was mind melting. I remember being on a slide, as I don't think I actually did any platforming. My friend had gotten a system at launch, so I had seen it a little before I owned it myself.
Opening it up on Christmas, I instantly went and plugged it into the downstairs TV near the tree.
I can clearly remember playing Dire, Dire Docks and actually holding my breath when I swam down. I couldn't get over how the system actually could show me accurate depth and draw in distances. Making Mario run around and getting the coins, looking at his oddly funny running animation, getting squished by a Thwomp.
I don't think that kind of experience will ever be imitated ever again. I'd felt it with Zelda: Link to the Past, Mario World, Mario 3, and the NES in general. Kind of a sad realization, really. Playing Ocarina almost got me there, and I loved Luigi's Mansion, but the level of euphoric pleasure and awe is on a plateau so high that there's no oxygen in the atmosphere.
Man those were good times.

My second Summer Job, and I haved 20-40 dollars a week from the pay check so I could buy the system when it launched. I had a plastic baggie I kept the money in on the topshelf of the closet. I remember pulling it out and counting it every couple of weeks.
I remember just being able to buy the system and Super Mario 64 when it came out. I was actually glad that the launch lineup sucked, because all I needed was Mario.

For me I wanted Blast Corp as my first game. I felt the controls on Mario were to Airy. I actually don't remember finding the stick odd or being awed by the 3D graphics. But I also grew up playing PC games.

The first time I witnessed the 64 was a Toys R' Us. They had Mario Kart 64 running, and I was just amazed, as was my mom. I remember losing miserably, but it was still so much fun, and sooo cool.

I actually bought a Japanese N64 (that still runs fine btw!) and remember getting it as a Christmas present from my dad. We paid like *gasp* $570.00 for it!!! (thank you the internet for not existing at the time...NOT!) I remember being super excited playing Mario 64, I was all o_O at the 3D and the gameplay. Ah the good memories...

The first time I saw an N64 was in Tokyo. I was there on a trip with my family and it had just come out. I waited in line for approximately half an hour before I got my turn to play. The wonderful feeling of control and the beautiful graphics amazed me. I almost convinced my parents to get me one (I was sooo close), but alas they did not.
And so began the waiting for a Aussie release, which was especially tough because I had to sell my SNES and all my games to save up enough money for the 64. IIRC A$400 for the console + A$200 for SM64 and WR64!
Within the last two years I had started buying back all the SNES games I'd sold in 1996 but now with the VC I'll probably just get the rest on Wii. Thankfully now I'll be able to afford the Wii without having to resort to trade-ins, I traded-in so many good games on the 64 and regret every one (eg blast corps, diddy kong racing).

local game store invested and had a booth in the middle of the shops with 8 N64's, about a month before release... was awsome sadly they later had issues with a nintendo rep, were swear words were thrown around instore, which lead to them not even caring for n64 a few months later
