Title: uncanny wii valley
Post by: eljefe on September 05, 2006, 01:13:14 PM
Will some motions, made to imitate a real-life actions, be off-kilter just enough that annoy and/ or freak people out? I've been thinking, that would be the only downside to this product.
Is their a "ceiling" to Wii motion-processing just like the graphical "peak"? and therefore an accompanying uncanny valley?
hmm

the uncanny valley is usually reserved for faces....i dont think it should be a problem since its arms we will be manipulating..although hands end up in the valley too

You know, only if there's a masturbating game...That'd be a little weird...Other than that, no...

The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley theory is that if a rendering is very realistic, but not quite perfect, it weirds out the viewer. That is, it looks "uncanny." eljefe asks if Wii's actions may be very close to realistic and therefore lie in a similar "uncanny valley" of game control. It seems unreasonable to me, but it is an interesting idea to consider.

Nope. It won't be off like the Uncanny Valley. We are just making motions like we always do.
Uncanny Valley also means when something is hyperrealistic. Look more realistic then the real thing. It can happen. Just feels wrong. Motion is Motion is Motion. The Wiimote won't put you their but whats onscreen will.

I don't get what this has to do with Wii.

The Wii will only enter the uncanny valley if you see an uncannily rendered character on-screenin third person doing the exact same one-to-one arm motions that you are.

I didn't see it in the article, but I remember reading about how when they were doing motion capture for The Polar Express film, as I imagine is the case with anything involving motion capture, is that they can't place motion sensors on the eyes or tongue, so eyes can't show proper motion, and the characters speak with essentially a slab of meat in their mouth. The result is a lack of natural motion and emotion. When the face is where people naturally look (I mean, you can't stare at a woman's chest all the time...>_<, not-fully-realistic things will tend to break down real quick.

The wii will be using impressive motion tracking technology for a single part of the character (like an arm) and not for the rest of it... or at least, not using the same source.
I don't see it being a big concern because
1) In a lot of games the arm will not be moving 1:1 with your controller movement, but rather approximating where a cursor is pointing.
2) Most of the Wii characters I've seen are not even trying to be photorealistic (Wii Sports)
3) It's unusual in a game for your own character to be the focus of your attention... you should be looking at what you're aiming at, not how your aiming arm looks.
