Quote To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card
Look like you'll still be able to play all the old games, but you will need the adapter to transfer the saved files over. Kinda sucks if you ask me.

It is puzzling why a Memory card slot wasn't just put in the first place along with whatever the PSP uses and just have the two and be done with it.
I had a feeling an adpator was coming, not much point in backwards compatability if you can't save your games anywhere. I didn't see it on the sony website but I can only guess that once you upload game saves to the PS3 that you can then just load/save your games right from there? That would make the most sense at this point.

But it also says that you upload it to a "virtual memory card" on the hard drive. So you would think that it stores it on there and you just get the information straight off the hard drive.

Because it's a non massed produced legacy connection. The adapter can eventually be phased out and they don't have to worry about it anymore.

well at least they are doing something unlike MS. But it still sucks that I'll have to go out and most likely drop $25-30 (I'm willing to bet it will be around this price) on a stupid adaptor just so I can transfer my old PSX and PS2 same games.

Everyone complaining about Nintendo's lack of harddrive take note.
SD card saving will be your best friend in future generations when you need to retrieve old game data now stored from 8bit era to modern day era.
WHOOHOO!!!

That is, until three years from now when the SD format is replaced with some other new memory format.

Perhaps in your part of the world. We've had DVD-only games for years now.

Oh, by the way, MS's approach to this was "You're screwed", Sony was planning to take the same approach IIRC but apparently they wisened up.

Compared to the majority of the bad news, this is quite minor and like KDR, at least they are giving you an option to bring over your saves.
