Title: Dead Rising
Post by: Nick DiMola on July 21, 2006, 02:20:19 PM
Anybody else picking this up in 2 weeks when it comes out? Looks like a ton of mindless fun. Glad I have a 360 to enjoy some of these games that are coming out that I won't be able to play on the Wii (mainly Perfect Dark 0 and Kameo).

I am but sadly I no longer have a Xbox 360 (mainly because there haven't been many exclusive games for it lately), but I may purchase one again next month.

Both Gears of War and Nintety-Nine Nights look spectacular, I am also looking forward to Too Human shaping up. Right now it doesn't appear to be too impressive, but I'm hoping by the time it releases it is as solid of a game as Eternal Darkness.

I thought PD0 was bland. Maybe the multiplayer is better, but the story mode was just yawn worthy. Can't say for certain about Kameo.
GoW definitely looks good and I'll have my friend pick that up for his 360 so I can try it.
As for Dead Rising, I'm wary because I've just seen too many games which have hordes of enemies to kill wind up becoming boring very rapidly, even if there are many ways to kill them (ie Gauntlet, Hunter the Reckoning, etc.).
I'd rent first to be sure.

Then again GoW looks like it has hordes of enemies too. At least in Dead Rising you can beat them up with stuffed animals!

GoW looks like it's more duck and cover strategy than button mashing to kill hordes of enemies as they march mindlessly toward you.

You have to wonder if the duck-n-covering is even necessary, with people going straight for the old run-n-gun, if the damage balance allows for that.
"Brave" gamers could undermine the concept and usefulness of the gameplay style.

From the looks of the videos, it IS necessary because the enemies shooting at you seemed to be using bullets instead of projectiles so it looked as though you were guaranteed to get hit if you stood out in the open too often.
Granted, there will likely be situations where you will have one or two enemies left and you can charge them, but I expect that running out into the middle of an open area will get you rapidly killed, especially in harder difficulties.

I get a serious Warhammer 40k vibe off of GoW. I mean, the armor looks a good bit like Space Marine power armor, and the ensignia the soldier's wear is a skull in a gear. The only franchise I've heard of that the primary human forces use a skull as their symbol is the Imperium in Warhammer 40k. And in the trailer, the guy uses a chainsaw-bayonet Chainsword ripoff FTW.
Plus there's the whole grim-future feeling and those Lcus guys remind me hugely of Orks.

The Juggernauts in UT2003 were pretty much Space Marine ripoffs so that's hardly surprising.

Never use the words "enjoy" and "Perfect Dark Zero" in the same sentence.

I think it be funny if you find out after the fact that GoW is actually set in the Warhammer Universe. They wanted it to stand on it's own legs.

I think GW would require them to put a big WH40k logo on the box then.

Picked up Dead Rising wednesday and have been enjoying it immensely with the exception of 2 things. 1) The annoying freaking two way radio and my biggest complaint 2) the text is so small my eyes are on the verge of explosion. I wonder if a ton of people have this complaint, because I would love to see a patch for the text hit Xbox Live within a week, until I see a patch I may just wait to play. Anybody else have any praises or complaints?

I have the text problem and I have an HD TV too. It is also a bit dissapointing to hear that it doesn't have a true free roam mode to unlock. Oh well it is still a good game even if I can't read what is going on

VGrev do you have the component cables set to HDTV then set the 360 to 720p or 1080i?

I have it and it's mindless fun...But I ran into something that I find hilariously stupid...This certain boss RESPAWNS...Which wouldn't be a problem if afore-mentioned boss wasn't in the very center of the mall where you might like to take shortcuts...WHAT WERE YOU THINKING, CAPCOM!?

I hate this game for ripping off BARRY BURTON'S likeness.
WHUT CAPCOM, WASN'T YOUR ORIGINAL HERO DESIGN GOOD ENOUGH?!

So then we are hoping for an average game that is highly over-rated because it has a good story...which actually doesn't make sense, and really isn't that good.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, personally I loved everything about Eternal Darkness, I guess that's what makes everyone different, go figure.

I have to say I love Dead Rising. Been playing almost every day since we got it. The text thing is annoying as hell and why can't Otis just talk over the damn radio?? The saving is kind of annoying but also kinda fun.
My favortie weapons so far, the sickle, the lawnmower, and the chainsaw. So much fun to just mow down all the zombies! Oh and there's also a hidden Kitana near the begining of the game that's pretty awesome, too!
Oh and VGrevolution, from what I've read there is an Infinity mode. As to what that truly is I don't know yet. but it sounds like it might be free roam.

Infinity Mode is not free-roaming...

Yeah, I loved Eternal Darkness too, and Too Human is seriously the only title I really want on a non-Nintendo console so far this generation..

Played through it on my friend's 360...
Great game, but it was great because of the story and survivor-saving aspects.
Killing zombies got boring after a while. I would have actually preferred it if the zombies weren't the primary antagonist and we instead had to deal with another type of creature from the Resident Evil universe, like lickers or hunters, and had fewer but harder and more complicated battles with those on a regular basis.

Screw that! It's hard enough escorting survivors with just zombies and psychopaths everywhere I turn...Human enemies are a *****! >=|
(Oh, I'm wondering if you even reached Day 2 or 3...Because you get more annoyances thrown into the mix...)

Yeah, the cult sucks, as do the special forces.
I'm just saying that, in general, I find games are better when they have fewer enemies which are more challenging individually than hordes of enemies which can be mowed down.
DR is not without its charm, though.

If it's a first person shooter. I want horde upon hordes of enemies to mow down. I don't want no driving. I don't want no Puzzles that will have me scratching my head when all I want to do is shoot down hordes of enemies. (That's why I like Serious Sam.) I tend to be on the more enemies side then the few enemies which are uber side.

Serious Sam is still pretty impressive, they managed to get a TON of enemies on the screen. Sadly that kind of game really is not my type (at least the first wasn't, haven't played the second).

The first second or the second second?
Personally I prefer Painkiller, the weapons just feel more satisfying.

I think the amount of enemies is what makes it so much fun. Taking a lawnmower and running over a buttload of them just makes me feel good!

I hate the HD Revolution..First King Kong being basically unplayable, and now there's no patch for Dead Rising. Here are some select quotes..
Quote Capcom has issued the following statement regarding the situation: "Unfortunately Dead Rising was optimized for High Definition TV's. Due to this, the font in the game might be difficult to read on standard definition TV's. If you are having a hard time reading the text, please try the following: 1.) Adjust the settings on your TV or monitor. 2.) Try using component cables instead of standard composite. 3.) Setting the TV to widescreen ratio (even though you may not have a widescreen TV) may help in some cases."
Wow. They didn't stop to think that standard definition TVs probably don't support component cables and widescreen..
Quote EGM: What's up with the supersmall font? Why not include a font that's legible for non-HDTV owners?
YK: [Laughs] People should definitely have an HDTV before buying an Xbox 360.
Ugh..

apparently capcom has stated that they cannot fix the problem. Apparently fixing text problems via a patch on Live is too big. So the problem is going to stick unless they decide to make a director's cut or something equally as g@y.

Well the 360 does render things in 720p, I believe the PS3 does so too so don't be surprised to see similar problems with a PS3 playing on a Standard TV.

I just played through Dead Rising all the way as of last night, and I can say I am very happy with the game and I'm glad I had the opportunity to play it.
Now onto what I'm not happy about. Recently I bought THIS and I am using it as my primary display for my Game Systems. Even with having a super sharp HD Set the text is still really small. Capcom really pissed me off when they said they wouldn't fix this. Granted I can at least read the text now but I still strain sitting maybe 7 ft. from the TV. The HD switch seems as if it may be tough for a little while while the developers iron out the glitches. I feel bad for any of you guys who are playing Dead Rising on a normal TV, for me it was impossible. I had to wait till my new screen arrived to do anything with it.

Capcom, Microsoft, and Sony DON'T CARE about people with Standard TVs and TVs smaller than 32".
Why? Cuz you didn't goto the big Best Buy store and spend $$$$$$$$ on the expensive 42" WS HDTV, which makes Sony VERY UPSET. Do you not see they're trying to train you into buying overpriced boxes?
"You need this and this to play this. But remember, you ought to have THIS in order to experience THIS the way we intended to show THIS!"
kIDS, don't fall into this technology trap.

Why do people parroting the anti-HDTV thing always make it sound like you can only buy big-screen HDTV's? It's like you're trying to turn it into a class thing or something. It doesn't cost that much to get a 27" or 32" HDTV.
I'm not saying it excuses what basically amounts to bad QA by Capcom in this case. It's pretty neglegent on their part. But this isn't some nefarious plot by HDTV manufacturers to get you to upgrade. To suggest that is just peurile.

yeah, improve when you also have to spend some other thousand-something dollars to buy OTHER equipment to get the FULL HD DRM crap revolution.....
and the obvious reason everyone says that you can only buy 42''+ HDTVs is really simple....the smaller the screen the harder it is discern the differences in resolutions....and another thing is....well, just get a 15'' monitor and up the resolution to 1600x1200.....
