Title: Possible uses for the Wii/DS connection
Post by: Requiem on July 07, 2006, 08:09:46 AM
Apart from the blatanly obvious uses for the connection (such as the DS demo download station and playing VC games on your DS), what other possible uses are there?

You guys go first...

Dual Screen PacMan Vs.

It has enough buttons to be a SNES controller for the VC.

How about draw your own plays in Madden. Or draw paths for your A.I. team mates in Rainbow Six. Or like in Perfect Dark it could be the controller for a remote spy device. How about urban driving games where there are garage doors that open when you input a security code at the right time, giving you access to different cars or shortcuts.

Using the DS as the controller, you could have the DS be your map and objectives screens.

In an RTS you could use the touch screen to send troops to specific parts of the map and have the upper screen to show your statistics

In an RPG the touch screen could be your item/magic selection screen and the top screen could be your character stats screen.

In an action/shooter game (RE4) touch screen could be used for "Real-Time Weapon Change" and the top screen for a map

BlackNMild - Your RE4 idea is intriuging

Imagine playing trauma center Wii. Someone could play the nurse and "hand" you the proper tools needed for surgery (by clicking the appropriate symbol on the touch screen). That would be crazy!

"Damn it, where is my scapel?!"

"Sponge, damn you, SPONGE?!"

"Doctor he's de-sating! He's DESATING!"

LOL. AWESOME idea Requiem!

Hmm... How about using the DS as a screen for spy cameras that you set up around a level?

Use the DS instead of a Wii virtual Keyboard for networked games and for browsing?

Use the Wii as the big screen display for a multi-player simultaneous DS game where each player keeps to their own DS, but the major action happens on the big screen?

Use the Wii controller to interact with a game, but use the DS in "book-held" mode to display information (like examining people, or reading books)?

um Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles would be nice, as well as an RTS where you use the DS and the Wiimote for greater multitasking... that would make online battles really intense when you and a friend work together using the same resources but are able to focus on different troops and truly divide and conquer

Would it be possible to have the top screen of the ds moved to the tv through the wireless connection?  Once the wii downloads a small amount of the game, forexample the DS download play part, it might be able to show the topscreens action.

I hope none of your ideas are implemented.

Looking at three screens to play one game??

Sounds a little tough for my simple mind.

Just give the games and the Wii controller.

Not for nothing, but most of your ideas can be taken can of with icons on ur t.v and the Wiimote, if anything I'd like to see quick changes (like real-time weapon changes) mapped out to a button and not necessarily require you to look at the DS. What's the point of real time weapon change if i have to stop playing with the wii, pick up my ds, pull out the stylus, then select and go back to the wii game? not to real time to me.

Not to poop on you guys or anything, but that's just how I feel about it, just the thought of using three screens to play is causing me pain, or maybe its that chinese food i just had...

not to poop on  you maryjane but maybe someone who isnt blazed could focus on three screens at once

lol kidding. actually that would make things overly complicated in certain game play scenarios. the only thing i could think of would be to do what FSA did and have a type of multiplayer game where action takes place on screen but depending on the situation gets transfered to the ds top screen. in that case only one screen on the ds can be used, of have something like a map for filler, something you wouldnt have to pay TOO much attention too.

It IS a relatively undeveloped concept, this console-handheld gig, so I have no doubt that most of the ideas we're coming up with are "blah." Still it gets the creative juices flowing you know?

Hmmm...

I'm trying to think of a way to hold the DS in "book-mode" style and the Wiimote with your other hand. This affords you several things: two sets of speakers at the user's location, a touchscreen, a simple microphone, two small screens in the user's off hand, and possibly a shoulder button on the DS... plus the Wiimote.

But to use the touchscreen, would it be too much of a hassle to drop the Wiimote and pick up a stylus? Or do we have a plastic tip add-on that turns the wiimote into a giant honking stylus?

Here's a concept: The Wii represents a computer you're hacking into. But it can fight back and counter-infect your DS handheld computer. Or maybe it might jump and start to infect your "Wiimote" instead. The user is chasing a process/virus/hacking-experience through three devices: their wiimote (which when infected will start screeching out of its speaker, and you'd prob need to execute a particular button combo to "flush" the Wiimote's memory), their DS (which would require the user to use the stylus attachment or simple buttons presses to scroll through reams of code to find the offending cycle) and their Wii, which, being their main target, can be interacted with via the DS as a hacking tool, and/or the Wiimote.

hmm... think think think...

There would be no need to focus on three screens at once.  The top DS screen and the tv would play the same thing.
This obviously wouldn't work for games where the bottom screen is the primary viewing screen but games like Mario Kart or Metroid would easily work in a situation where you would only look at the bottom screen rarely.

Take my idea for Madden, you don't look at the DS until you are making your play. And if you're in multiplayer mode, you can't see what the other is planning.

And in Rainbow Six, while you could trace a path with the remote, the DS could also act as a GPS so you can track the progress of the team with out having a map overlay. Its not like the action is so balls to the walls that you won't have time to take a glance.

What I'd like about using the DS as a remte spy cam is you can put it down if your character is in trouble, then come back to it. In Perfect Dark you had to abandon the device and pick it up later, thanks to the single screen.

A Magic: The Gathering-type experience would work well with the Wii/DS connection.  Heck, any card game besides Yu-gi-oh would be outstanding.

Anyone else here have a dreamcast and vmu?  Very similar options, but now more complex.

Expanding on Kairon idea of the Book being held.  What come to my mind is Magic Book.  It would list you spells, description, and the how.  Just like a real magic book would.  You would use the d-pad to scroll through, no stylus.  So in the game you have the "Book" in your offhand and the "Wand" in your other.  Just like a real fledgling wizard would.  Obviously since the DS really has no bearing on what spell you cast as you learn the spells you will no longer need the "Book"  so you can just leave the DS lieing there waiting to be a reference.

It also could very easily be a Pokedex,or something similar.  In fact if you wanted to go more "Traditional" with the game you could control everything from the DS and only really have Pretty pictures on the screen, pretty not plastic.

The DS could also be a companion.  As you going along the DS will start to make noise telling you about important events.  Giving you some bits of trivia.  Directing you were to go.  In other words take the place that Jimminy(sp?) Cricket takes with Pinnochio.

So there are a good amount of possibilities.  We're just hitting the tip of the iceberg on this one.

The DS has a microphone, the Wii doesn't.

Online voice chat anyone?  Without a game, I could like "call" a friend who has the Wii 24hour thingy, it'll "page" him to some degree, and then we can talk saving me loads on my phone bill, because I don't have 4500 rollover minutes. (My friends and I thought it would be a good idea to all get the same cell phone service for the unlimited mobile to mobile minutes... it was a good idea, and so is this... i think)

Then in game you could talk smack to someone, and if they don't have a DS they'll be pissed cuz they can't talk it back, making them run out and buy a DS increasing sales for Nintendo.

I take back what I said before, this isn't a good idea, it's simply genius. :P

But is the DS' mic any good? Or are all mic's just that inexpensive and it's all packaging?

Wait, I thought the Wii-mote had a microphone? Well, there has been no official news to the effect, but I remember a few rumors popping up after the speaker was announced, and it seemed to be accepted as truth.

But Iwata said in an EGM interview that they didn't include a mic because people don't have a concept of talking to their tv remotes, they'd expect a hands-free headphone type device for microphone functionality.

Idea:

A game where you have the game world on the TV screen you're interacting with, and another character is giving you real-time dynamic hints on the DS at the same time. At times you may have to shut the DS into "sleep" mode to avoid being discovered holding the spy gadget. Only when the DS is closed are you able to pass for a regular person.

Oh, but you also need the DS open to perform spy functions like placing bugs or hacking. Of course, people in the game world can walk in on you while you're focused on your DS, so it's even more important to not get caught and shut the DS to hide it.

Kairon's idea is f*cking cool.  And best of all it's single player so you don't have to gather all your friends together like all of Nintendo's connectivity ideas needed.

QFT

thats by far the best idea i've heard for ds/wii connectivity and i would buy that game in a heart beat. it would really draw you into the world the game creates.

any other good ideas kairon?

That idea is really sweet.

But for some reason all I can think about is a game where you're sneaking a look at pr0n on your DS without getting caught.  o_0

ROFL.

I like the idea too.  I actually liked the Kirby Tilt n' Tumble idea Nintendo had for the original connectivity, where you played the game on both screens, but I guess it won't work as well with DS since it has no motion sensor built in.  You could add one, but is that worth it?  Also, the DS having two screens of it's own makes the two-screen concept kind of moot, why not just make the game for the DS?

Umm, yeah, so I have no good ideas right now.
