Title: First REAL screen shot of Excite Truck.
Post by: Terranigma Freak on June 19, 2006, 12:29:00 PM
Boy, it's been a long time since we got any real screen shots of Wii games. I still can't believe that after E3, we're still getting crappy screen shots ripped from the E3 show floor and fixed up with Photoshop to kind of look like it's a high-res direct-feed. About the only thing we got so far are Sonic and Red Steel screen shots.
Anyway, here's a single screen shot of Excite Truck. Yes, a single freaking screen shot!

Not bad, considering the terrain can actually morph instead of just sit there.
I want to see some powdery snowy mountain tops.

Graphics look fine to me, plus big damn trucks will be awesome no matter what.

They could probably be better, but when you consider that you'll usually be going too fast to admire the scenery, they're MORE than adequate.

Looks okay. Honestly in a screenshot the game looks kind of dull compared to video feed. I don't think this screenshot is going to get people looking at the back of the box excited.
Still it's nice to get any screenshot. Overall I thought Nintendo had a good E3 but it royally pissed me off that they pretty much released no Wii screenshots at all aside from one of two promotional shots per game and the SSB shots. I know they want people to try the game out but most of us can't go to E3 and thus need screenshots. I hope that isn't going to be a trend with the Wii or else E3 coverage is going to be pretty meh for anyone not attending the show.
One thing the game needs is dirt. The truck is offroading yet it's perfectly clean and shiny. That looks really wrong. Nintendo was good at adding little details with Cube games so they should be able to keep that up with superior hardware.

It look sharp, but you know it's not stunning. Race games especially need to be seen in motion. If it can sustain that level of detail at high speeds, and convey that sense of speed, it will look fine.

A bit late. This screenshot was avaliable at Nintendo's press site within hours of the conference. =|

Perhaps someday in the future developers can put video on the back of game boxes...

Yeah, but do you know why they haven't been releasing screenshots? Oh, yeah, you do:

Nintendo is getting massively good press and word of mouth.... releasing tons of screenshots that look like they came from gamecube games would only hurt things.

The dust could look better. I like the trees though

This is not next-gen.

looks nice, the only thing would be, as Ian said, dirt on the big damn trucks
on another note, looking at the trees made me wonder.....Adaptive Anti-Aliasing?....(does seem like it, but it should be near the tree to nake sure)

I don't know. That flying truck in the screenshot conveys excitement well to me.

Granted the screenshot doesn't look like a huge step up from this generation, but after seeing the movies for the gameplay it is quite a visual treat to see the game in motion. It is silky smooth and super fast, which should be taken into account when judging its graphics. With those things taken into consideration it does look next generation!

The next-gen racing game I tried at a store ran at 30fps.
I'd rather have a game with much simpler graphics at 60fps. Racing games need a constant 60fps.

Needs more stones. The left cliff looks rather plain. But that's more artistic design, than a graphics thing.

Perhaps by just taking the picture in account, but if this was an Xbox game and looked like that they would be lucky to get 30fps if that. It appears this runs at a smooth 60fps. The sense of motion is amazing.

The car that's in mid-air has the plume of N64watersplasheffect dust behind it, whereas the boosting(?) truck on the right has nothing. ---- I went back to check some youtube vids; if you look at the one titled Dodging Trees, at 9 seconds it looks like the area in the screen; it actually looks like there was a puddle of water at that spot.. so i guess it is a water effect. A puff of bluish smoke for a splash.

The terrain textures look blurry as hell.

Which one? Please show me this Xbox game that looks and plays like Excite Truck, I would like to buy it! Rush in Midway Arcade Treasures 3 doesn't count because that's very, very broken!

Great draw distance, there appears to be some AF going on there aswell. To bad the graphics weren't created using final hardware, particularly Hollywood.

First of all, the "blurry" textures aren't blurry, they're dirt roads. All dirt road textures look like that. Second of all, I notice nobody pointed out the beautiful lighting that is reflected off the car along with environment mapping reflecting off the back. Everything in the picture are completely organic, as in no sharp polygon edges can be seen anywhere (not without a magnifing glass anyway). The hills are smooth and round as are the vehicles.

that's because the rest of it looks so bad. the only explanation I can see being is that it is because the game is fast, and therefor more demanding. going from eye level to 100 ft high in a second or two likey takes a toll on the scenery rendering.

I think those that haven't should see the game in motion before bashing its graphics. The game is visually appealing when you see it in motion (the levels are built around the sense of speed, so sure some things won't look perfect).

Did you read the very first reply to this thread? :] The landscape morphs in real time, nobody should care if the dirt doesn't look like real dirt when it's being formed into a gigantic ramp to fling yourself off.

Not more demanding, it's the fact that only a certain amout of detail is NECESSARY when going at such a high speed.

I was talking about the screenshot. But if you want to see similar-looking XBox games (of course they won't control or play like this game), try RalliSport Challenge 2002 or 4x4 Evo 2. Remember I'm talking about the screenshot, I know the game looks great in motion, heck I'm "frothing with anticipation" about the game myself...aside from the crappy name.

Ok, I found similar screen shots of the 2 Xbox games mentioned above. So tell me, how does the Excite Truck screenshot look in comparison?
I think it looks slightly better. Gamecube 1.5 indeed.

gamecube 1.5 on a game like resident evil 4 would look magnifficent

RE4 is old news now, TP is the game that sets the new graphical standards on GC. Still, if you want accurate comparison to "super computers" the 2 Rogue Squadron games can not be beaten. They use the exact same models/textures straight from ILM (with the textures being lowers resolution of course). We're talking about a system that basically delivers movie like graphics, and the Wii is 1.5 times the power. That is more than enough power for me.
