Title: Animal Crossing Wii: the speculation
Post by: ShyGuy on June 04, 2006, 02:56:04 PM
There are three different things that we have learned about the Wii that make me think of how they could be used in the upcoming AC:Wii
1. Caricatures I think the custom face making revealed in Wii sports will also be used in creating your Animal Crossing character. This is going to give more variation in appearance than the current haircuts, hats and accessories. I think this could be an indication of the graphical style AC:Wii could take as well.
2. Integration Speaking of Wii sports, what if that title could be integrated into AC:Wii? You could play tennis with Nook or fly a plane over your village. The Opera web browser could work in AC as well, visit a site in game to view news from abroad, maybe have an online auction house?
3. 24 hour connect Nintendo has given us a taste of free downloabable content with Wild World, I hope we get much more on the Wii. I assume the visit your village after-hours will be optional, and visitors probably won't be able to affect trees or flowers or anything. Village to village mail should be possible now too.

In order for me to buy this it has to be new. I didn't buy WW because it was just an extension of the original. It's time to rethink this game and redo it totally.
I think it needs to be made more of a virtual world. I really think it needs to become MMO. Because the current setup is about as close to ideal as you can get. Adding more stuff to do won't improve it much. We need a brand new design built from the same principles. MMO!

I got WW because it was a huge extension of the original game, and it's portable! That's a huge plus for me, especially since Animal Crossing is best played in small reps.
I agree with Artimus, though, if they want to move the series back to consoles they are going to need something major to seperate it from WW.

Over at Cube 3, they have an article stating that through the Wiiconnect24, players can use email or a mobile device to send letters to Animal Crossing residents that will appear as AC letters for the user.
That's kinda crazy. Using email and/or a cell phone to interact with a game world? I would have never thought of that. What else do they have in store?

*boots up animal crossing* Hmm...looks like I've got mail! *opens mailbox* Upgrade to a premium Yahoo account today! FREE PENIS ENLARGEMENT - click for details Send this letter to 5 friends and you could make up to 10,000 dollars IN CASH
In all seriousness, though, that's cool news, and I think it's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to WiiConnect24.

I also expect Nintendo to go special event crazy with Wii Connect 24. Every week, a new holiday/crazy town emergency/special item/surprise guest/etc.

Reggie visits your town while you're asleep. You sign on and everyone is dead, and the town torched.

Oh really? I'd think if he visited my town he'd just be performing a census. After all, his job is to take names...

probably not an issue, since Wii will use the Friends codes system

Mr. Resetti could be tough. I mean Reggie is now Mr. President. The top is not kind to a hard edge.
I'm actually more excited about the possibility of actually digging with the shovel. Cutting with the ax. Doing the appropriate action as a psuedo minigame for the appropriate item. Casting the fishing rod. Flaying the net. Maybe even play some of my instruments. I could play my virtual console games in my home. I would love to be able to setup an arcade.
Get enough bells together and design, build, and stock my own arcade people could come to. It would use my VC games. Even better if my Animal Crossing characters could play some VC games with me as Player 2. (Though the AI would have to come with the VC game with varying degrees.)

I think Animal Crossing needs to become a world that is perminantly online. It needs to become a more casual (non-violent) World of Warcraft.

If AC goes persistantly asynchronously online, it needs to NOT become WarCraft, but a game based on the viral spread of creative designs and interpersonal relationships.
Something like the Deviantart website where artists have their own homepages and post their stuff in a MySpace type environment, or like a Second Life type of world where each player produces unique content, but perhaps with less emphasis on virtual sex and mass chatting.
