Title: Whats under the flap?
Post by: Falcon101 on May 28, 2006, 01:45:14 PM
Hey long time reader and visitor of the forums and site first time post so here it goes...
I've been trying to figure out if there is any significant reason why we haven't seen under the front flap and why there is no official word on it. What if its the gameboy player? It could be slots for the carts to go into! I think most people would like that considering that the Wii is backwards compatible with the gamecube and it would make the gameboy player obsolete.
Think of the library of games that the Wii will have at launch with the great lauch line up already plus the virtual console, and the entire gameboy archive! You could even play DS games using the wiimote as a stylus you just wouldn't actually have to touch the screen just hold down a button maybe? I don't know but it does kind of make sense to me.

The SD card slot probably. It most likely wasn't shown because it's not terribly interesting. Or it could be the Nura-Link Mindcable port. I'll bet on SD card slot though.

Though I hope you're right about it being a built in GB player, it would make just as much sense for Nintendo to make long out of print GB games available for download on the virtual console, (nothing of this sort has been confirmed, however). There's no way they'd make DS games playable on Wii, especially since wireless connectivity between the two has been confirmed, not to mention it'd be unwieldy. It's most likely that the flap is a slot for SD cards or other expandable memory, which will function as memory cards and storage for virtual console games.

Reps at E3 told me it was just for SD cards. I don't believe they're telling the whole story though.

That would be cool. It seems to me though that if they're gonna support GB+GBA games, they're as likely to do it through Virtual Console as through a cartridge slot

I'm not a fan of conspiracy theories, but if it's just an SD slot under that flap, why haven't they showed it yet?

Can SD slots be used to plug external hardware into? I know there are things like modems and GPS receivers for CF slots but what about SD?

You can get GPS and wireless network interfaces for SD - not sure how interesting that'd be for a non-portable console that already has wireless networking built in, though.

From what I remember reading on another forum, this person was able to take a quick peak under the flap during E3 and said there was a slot of SD cards and some sort of sensor that helps the wiimote re-center or something like that.

I don't think they were using acual Wiis at E3, so that picture is probably of a hole where something cool would have been, had the unit been made functional.

That mysterious round thing as seen in that link is interesting. Why couldn't they get a better image of that? At this point, it could be anything - the cool thing is that it's likely something.
It's like Bigfoot.

In order of top to down.
Reset Button (or mysterious expansion part, it has to have one and I haven't seen anywhere else for it.) Media Reader (CF, SD (I doubt SDIO), you know the normal gambit) USB
That's my guess.

Oh, it's where they're gonna have the expansion port for the new projector Light Blue Optics
OK, but come on, wouldn't that be awesome

I was hoping for a fron USB port and a reset button.
But this brings us back to the Question. Where is the Mysterious expansion port?

What's so mysterious about an expansion port? Nintendo consoles always have one or 2.

That's what makes it Mysterious. They always have them but there either not used or not all of them. They never say anything about there plans for them till about half way through the consoles life cycle.

Enlarged and Enhanced:
Can anyone make it out? The little grey rectangle on the far right side of the flap looks like a light of some sort. The center black inset looks possibly like a memory slot, but that little extra notch it has on it is a little strange. The white circle thing on the left has got me. It could be a light, a button, an infrared sensor, or some sort of microphone jack.

I agree with those that think the eye is a camera. It probably something equivalent of a cell phone quality digital camera. Games like Wii Sports hint at the ability to put your likeness in the games, so the camera (if it is a camera) would be a nice bonus to allow games to add their face to a game without an additional add on.

Button little notch is where SD cards go. The top bigger area is where Compact Flash goes. You can also put a few different mediums into something with a slot configuration like that. That's pretty standard on PC multi-card readers.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that there'll be a SYNC button in there.

I'm not sure what it's for. It could be for the Wiimote, but why not have that button on the sensor bar or Wiimote itself?
It could be to synchronize the memory card or something. What do you guys think?

But in that last picture it almost seems like something is missing. Just looks like a big hole, not like some of the other pictures that have been posted. Strange

palm (makers of palm pilot and palm os) use a SYNC button... i'm wondering if that vpocket software will come out and maybe even take use of the DS Ram Cartridge that the Browser uses... maybe you can just plug in your DS/DSlite Ram Cartridge into the DS and then hit the SYNC button to sync your data (games/PIM/movie/music)

They always put them there, just in case. To keep their options open, it's no big deal.
