Title: NEW hardware news! (Wii has LAN adaptor)
Post by: MattVDB on May 09, 2006, 10:08:24 AM
"Users can connect wirelessly using IEEE 802.11b/g, or with a USB 2.0 LAN adaptor."

Link to Nintendo's Site

All I can say is "yes!"  This gives no excuse now for people to not play online.  Wifi or not, this is great news.

Lack of Highspeed?

USB = Not Standard.  Bah.  Why build-in wireless, but make a wired option an add-on?

Sounds good.

Oh, hey, a picture of the baton...

Could someone please explain this to me.  Im assuming this means it works just like the DS and it needs a nearby pc with broadband.  Or is it "self-sufficient" and not need a nearby PC.

I believe they mean USB to LAN adapter. As in a USB cable modem.

Ok.  That clears it up. Thank you.

I guess that rules me out for the online stuff then. Bummer.

It just means you use usb to connect up to the internet.

IF you have an ethernet port on your router or cable modem then you need  something like this.

Anyone think that the Wii would work on a 19.6kb dial-up connection. Cause that is all i got and will be all i have for many years unfortuantely.

I seriously doubt it.

They might eventually release a dialup adaptor for some limited uses like download VC games, but trying to design games to be playable at 19.6k is just way too limiting.

I figured as much.  Wishful thinking i guess.  O well.  There goes all online for me.  Sob.

I imagine you could hook up via dial-up in the same way you would with the DS.  aka via your pc.

I can connect my computer to my DSL modem with either USB or Ethernet cable.  Also my modem is wireless, both my parenst use it wirelessly and I use it with my DS, but Ethernet on my computer.

trip1eX: Yeah, you could certainly get an internet connection on the Wii over dial-up, but it would be too slow/laggy to play games over. As jasonditz said, it would still be usable for VC downloads.

It just depends on the games.  Some games don't require all the much bandwidth actually.

But of course it's not an ideal connection meaning you're likely to run into problems.  I was just pointing out that I'm sure it can be done and like you said you can probably connect to the VC and maybe even play a simple online game.

uhhh, so if i have a wii, and my brother has a wii, then we still need to use a wireless USB adapter to play each other? or someother type of device. or am i totally missing something?

No....

The Wii is exactly like the DS.

Does that answer your questions?

NOTE: It can even play LAN with a single disk!

The USB adapter is just so you can use an Ethernet cable for internet connection if you don't have WiFi. You'll be able to linkup two Wiis out of the box using the built-in WiFi adapters.

Now the real question for me is if I get another copy of Mario Kart can I plug my GCN to the Lan and have my Wii on the wireless and do the Lan gaming in that game?  Or how about PSO?

I've been wondering that myself.  I'm assuming that I can play GCN Connectivity titles on my Wii and link the cable to the Game Boy Player though.

Yeah, when I posted this, I probably should have done a little bit of explaining first.  I just remember Ian and others complaining about the lack of LAN port and the Wii only having WiFi.  What this is, is simply the ability to connect to the WiFi Connection without using the built in WiFi to do so, but rather through regular Cat-5 cables.  It's awesome that it's available, but for some, it sucks that it's an add-on that you have to buy.

I don't understand wireless lingo, so is it possible that I can use Nintendo's USB dongle?

In order to connect wirelessly, you need nothing, it's built in (like the DS).

If you want to hook a ethernet cable up to the Wii, you need a USB/Ethernet Dongle.

If I hear someone complain about the dongle and then complain about [edit: lack of] HD, I will slap them.  People complain too much.

Wireless only is fine in my book, get over it... wires blow!  Who the heck has ethernet wires to their TV's anyways?

Cool, I can use my Nintendo Wifi USB dongle for Wii.

Shecky: I am not complaining about the ethernet not being built-in, but I will probably need the USB adapter because college wi-fi networks tend to have all kinds of annoying security measures. I guess I will find out when I actually try to set up my Wii, though.

Gamecube LAN titles will most definately *not* be supported.

AnyoneEB: I understand that for some people, the wired option is more viable.  On the bright side, the Wii should have a far more robust handling of wireless networks - including the various serurity protocols.  The Wii doesn't have the same constraints as the DS has.

What urks me is the people who blindly complain about the lack of built in ethernet and then turn around and complain about the lack of HD.  Wireless networking is expanding faster than the HD TV market!  If your all for new technology, lose the wires!

One last note about the Nintendo WiFi adapter.  **If** it's a 802.11b adapter, look for Nintendo to have a "HighSpeed" or "Max" or something like that version when Wii releases.  Basically releasing a 802.11b/g adapter.  If they do, remember that 802.11b is pleanty fast for gaming (assuming your in a reasonable proximity to the adapter) and that Wii would be able to take advantage of the full speed of the link.  The DS artificially limits the speed to limit power consumption.  My point, you don't have to upgrade... try it first.

The problem for me with the Wi-fi Usb dongle is the range. My lounge is way too far away for it to pick up the signal of the dongle.

The ethernet adapter just means you can use a cord instead of wireless. AKA an ethernet cable, one of these:

If you have high speed then you almost certainly can support this. If you have high speed you CAN support either ethernet cables or wireless. Wii supports all.
