Title: Disaster: Day of Crisis - M Rated?
Post by: ProtoNY on May 09, 2006, 10:05:27 AM
Notice that when you go to the page for the game through:
http://wii.nintendo.com/software.html
They are asking for your DOB. I am guessing that this is a darker title than anything they have done 1st party, perhaps? Shuold be interesting.

Sounds like it might be a kind of survival horror game. But with mother nature delivering the horror. Could be amazing. Don't count this game out. When more info it revealed it might end up being one of the Wii's most anticipated titles.
I'll say one thing, the game's hero looks cool as hell. Kind of like Wolverine but even more bad ass.

As I said, it's the most intriguing of the three new IPs.

Very true, Omen.
P.S. That's the craziest picture. I wouldn't want to be that dude.

Note that the game's hero is holding a gun...
I don't think he's going to be shooting any volcanoes or tidal waves with that...

He'll be shooting evil environmentalists who are participating in a vast conspiracy to bring about global warming to prove, once and for all, that global warming does exist.

The art I saw on the page after you entered you DOB upped my interest in the game for some reason.

Did you guys read the synopsis?
Well if you did, you would know why he has a gun.

It's from Monolith, the makers of F.E.A.R. (I know this site lists Monolith Software, the Baten Katos people, but they're listed as Monolith Soft elsewhere in the press materials). This Monolith is just listed as "Monolith".

Don't they ask for DOB on any game that isn't rated yet? I think I remember having to enter it to check out MP:2 before it was given a rating.
I do like the way this game looks though.

I like how Nintendo's age check thing always defaults to 1920 so I only have to make one click to bypass it.

I imagine riots, mobbing, etc will be in the game, too.

yes but it didnt give any incite to the game. reggie started talking about it and you see a volcano erupt, then a giant tidal wave flood a city (i swore they took a scene from The Day After Tomorrow when they showed it) then you see a gritty character. the character looked like a male in his mid twenties with midlength (from waht i remember) black hair and facial hair. that was all

This concept is silly. And the character design gets a quadruple thumbs down.

If you hide power ups in endangered species that you have to blow up and use Al Gore as a human shield it will be the only game I ever need...

Over at IGN, while watching the "Year 2007 titles" movie, I noticed that there was breif gameplay footage for this game.

Anybody know what the boxing game after Marvel Ultimate alliance and the train game after Cooking Mama are? The boxing one is pretty cartoony, could this be Punch-Out? Probably not.
Day of Crisis looks interesting. I'm viewing it skeptically because I don't know what Monolithsoft's history with non-RPGs is like, but it's a fun concept anyway.

Boxing game = Hajime no Ippo (based on the manga of the same name)
The train game is yet another train simulator...

I'm guessing it's nothing. I think they do a DOB check on RP ("Rating Pending") rated games too.

The following screenshots really excited me about this project.
I like the idea of working around a natural disaster to help people and survive...but it is even better when you throw in the aspect of either terrorists, or hoodlums acting out fear with violence. Hopefully, there is a really nice progression with the story.
The disaster hits and you are just focused on survival and helping others survive... As paranoia hits you start having to deal with keeping order among the chaos... Finally you learn that the natural disaster was actually a planned attack by terrorists, and you have to defend the city.
All while this is happening you have to deal with constant weather and environmental changes/challenges.
This game could be a killer app. I hope Nintendo gives the game time to develop and become perfect. This game would be a perfect Summer game for 08.

Nintendo's investment in Monolith is probably the same reason they took over Retro (100%)...they saw the promise in their work. Hopefully that's what we're getting out of Disaster: Day of Crisis.
This is sort of like Endless Ocean non-game-like game...but quite the opposite in terms of quality. Cool stuff.

The graphics aren't anything amazing, but you have to remember, this is the first time Monolith Soft has tried their hand at a video game before.

All I'm saying is that...if you're out there trying to survive a disaster and rescuing people along the way...then it'd loosely fall in that category with Endless Ocean...yes...sort of...
It's not your traditional, action/adventure like Zelda or Metroid Prime...it's more like...uhmmm...let me rescue some folks...touch some dolphins...raise a dog. You know...the non-game games.

But Zelda has you surviving the disaster of THE GANON while rescuing homosexual lumberjacks on surfboards under the city of spells and dried egg noodles!

In that case, Dead Rising is a non-game.

It depends on HOW it is implemented. If the game is designed in such that there are puzzles, action, and life/death situations to rescue people and yourself then it is not a non-game like Endless Ocean but a traditional adventure game.
And they have already shown elements of needing to attack terroist like enemies in the city, so that even adds more action to the game.
This game is in no way a non-game, but is going to be a nice genre blending adventure game.

I get the feeling that the reason for the screenshots not looking so hot is because there will be so much visual horsepower going into the world around the characters. Something like GTA, which needed to tone down the character models in order to create a vast city.

It's the inevitable result of the transformation of games into 'art': soon, the only real games will be the unplayable ones that art critics can write page-long dissertations about.
