Title: The Official Nintendo E3 Press Conference Is Happenin'! Thread
Post by: Artimus on May 09, 2006, 06:04:47 AM
It's here! 1:35 left until all our dreams (hopefully) come true. Let's all join hands together and sing camp fire songs while we wait.

Just a reminder, it's live on GameSpot: http://www.gamespot.com/pages/special_events/live.php?event=e32006

Most blogging sites will also have live reports.

Are you ready? What is your one wish? Mine is Mario Wii. I really liked Sunshine (gets a very unfair rep) but I'm really ready for the next great Mario game. If it's not there, or just in video, I'll have to feel a little let down. But hopefully it is there!

Yay.

THE ANTICIPATION IS KILLING ME!!!!!!!

I am personally hoping that Pilotwings is truly coming out and definitely Mario Wii. I am also hoping for some new IP. A new look for Nintendo with some new characters to buff up their cast.

"oh but you can get on the chat! Im at work and in the chat too"

I made a rule for myself years ago that I would never ever chat while at work.  I figured once I did it once and got away with it I'd start doing it again and the next thing I know I would be wasting too much time yakking it up with my friends.  Forums are a bad enough distraction.

"wha??....2 versions of zelda....here comes Ian"

On one hand I'm happy that we still get it on the Cube.  But I would prefer one version for both consoles so that I can get the Cube version and then later play it on the Wii whenever I end up buying it.  Now there's that feeling that if I get the Cube version I'm buying the "lesser" version.  Like I'll be missing out.  Or I'll have to buy both.

I guess I could just get the Cube one and then get the Wii one as Player's Choice years down the line.

Those new IPs suck.

Mario Galaxy looks lonely, as in, I see no Luigi; and I'm not sure I'm happy the game isn't Mario Mushroom Kingdom.

Post by: nemo_83 on May 09, 2006, 08:25:35 AM
Red Steel has been the most impressive.  The new IPs were really crap.  A game about wacking people with a hammer, real original.

I'm still not sure I'm going to like this Galaxy theme.  One reason I hated Sunshine was it was hardly Mushroom Kingdom related.  They'll likely wait till last to show it off entirely (Metroid as well).  So far though, with the important games I have not been pleased by the control schemes.  I missed some of the Zelda demo.  How is the camera controlled?  The nunchuck?  What does the remote speaker do in Zelda?

Logging in from work just for a shecky "told you so"...

As I said that there was no way we're getting 2 games for the price of one...  and now we have 2 games
Although I bet that they offer a discount if you pick them both up, now that it's confirmed that there are 2 titles

Also shows that they were never really finished with the GCN version, hence the delay.

I'm using this accurate prediction in my performace review... which happens now.

doesn't take playing a game to know if it is a good idea or not, seriously, the new IPs are not interesting.  i'm sure excite truck didn't cost them much to produce but that emergency game just looks like the stupidest idea for a game.

still no metroid info, maybe the controls will have options this time allowing players to switch the a and b button functions.

It's HAMMERTIME!

Only saw it beginning after the One Piece trailer but looks nice. I just wish they had spent less time with useless chitchat and more with actual games.

And am I the only one who saw TP and thought "what, futuristic Zelda?"?

Overall the graphics really looked like the Wii is pretty much a Gamecube, only Mario Galaxy looked impressive.

Yeah, that was my take on it.

What was the big secret? Wiimote has a speaker? Your Wii will remain connected to the network all the time?

And the lack of SSB has crushed my soul.

Yep, Mario Galaxy crushes SSB.  I'm looking forward to SSB, but if Nintendo can have Mario in it's place, I don't really care.

I'm about to go back to sleep, I hardly slept last night.  I've shared my thoughts.  The graphics are so so, Red Steel, Metroid, and Zelda looked nice.  I wasn't expecting to be turned off by the controls in games though.  I don't want a point and click Mario and that is what that looked like.  Zelda's delay, they left out the one single thing I wanted this 3D motion tech for; yeah, I'm really disappointed on that.

I guess I was expecting something awesome and original and industry shaking, there just wasn't that one game; just the promise that in the future the controller can still do that industry changing title.

What is the point of the Wii being on all the time?  I actually don't like the idea at all.  I want complete control of when I update or download things.  Otherwise some bug might kill my saves or something.  I hate sleep modes and bullsh!t like that.  I like to flick a switch and have the thing go "beeoooo!" and it's off, period.  If I have to I'll just yank the cord from the wall every time I turn it off.

I disagree...looked like the most appealing of the new IPs in potential.  Did you see that big tidal wave coming down on the sity?  Yeah!

Overall, very good show.  Would have liked one more bomb to close it in a fit of hysteria, but they had the E3 win before they took the stage, so perhaps it's better to save some more stuff for ...maybe Space World?

Look at it this way-Nintendo spanked Sony, and DIDN'T reveal all of their info.

I just watched the Red Steel trailer from IGN, and if the footage is genuine and un-doctored, that is one fine looking game.  The lighting is great, the models are weel done and feature some nice soft self-shadowing, and it seems to be downright fluid.

How hard could it be to stop viruses when the console doesn't even have a hard drive? You figure there are no viruses for Macs, and a console is a much more controlled environment and the Wii will have a smaller install base, and I have a hard time seeing this being an issue. And the worst it could ever do is corrupt your saves and basically irritate you.

Well, I couldn't get planetchat to work during the conference and now I'm kind of glad. Don't think I could put up with your guys' bitching.

INCREDIBLE conference. The opening was like something out of a big disney show...left me speechless. Miyamoto is awesome.

Super Mario Galaxies is mind-blowinging great looking. It gave me that warm, fuzzy, magical, experiencing Super Mario 64 for the first time feeling.

The new franchises look good...I'm sure excite truck will be a good racer, and the visuals in 'Diaster' were really good.

Red Steel and Prime both look incredible. This is probably the first time I've wrapped my head around just how well the wiimote will control.

Graphics, overall, look great to me.

I was surprised by how movement was required in the tennis game. Looks fun. Especially the customizable faces bit.

Console always on sounds great, I know Nintendo will have a field day with that.

Marketing-related stuff looked really good.

Kodak theatre looked great...I'm sure that'll play well in news clips.

Zelda's Wiimote functionality looked very good.

Dissapointed that there wasn't a final surprise...I was sure they were going to close with Miyamoto's new IP. I guess they want to keep generating press throughout the year, which fine.

Overall, best e3 conference ever, bar none.+

Obviously alot of you have missed the scattered comments from the few, so I will repeat it five times. Hopeful that, and the fact that it is all in one post, will help it sink in;

The show HAS NOT started yet.
The show HAS NOT started yet.
The show HAS NOT started yet.
The show HAS NOT started yet.
The show HAS NOT started yet.

They ALWAYS keep a decent amount of stuff secret to spread excitement at the show, keep people coming back to their booths. Dont be suprised if SSM isnt shown until day 1. In fact, its totally possible that it could be one of a few "closed door" games that you KNOW they will have. But beyond all of that; Turn the speakers up louder when they say 27 GAMES TO PLAY ON THE SHOW FLOOR!!! Holy CRAP thats huge!! Maybe I am the worst mathmatician of all time, so you guys help me out here; did any of yousee 27 games shown at this press conference? I dont think I got anywhere close to 27.

Not releasing a price point this soon is a good idea. If Sony was serious about their price but curious as to what Nintendo would do, so they could "suprise" everyone down the line with a cheaper price, now they can't. Now they are left holding their very, very expensive ball. DONT DROP IT SONY! mwahahahahaahaha.

OK, you know what? In World Of Warcraft, I have a paladin. He has a hammer. a BIG hammer. I LIKE big hammers. I like beat em up games. Putting the two together makes me really want to try this game. Mario looked very cool, Metroid looked about the same as far as I could tell, but what had me the MOST interested was that Disaster game. What they showed looked like FMV, which isnt how Nintendo usually operates. Am I the only one here to recognize that the Red Steel demo was showing off some pretty impressive effects? That didnt look like no Gamecube game to me...

And Zelda is looking WAAAY better, IMO.

While Sony's conference contained a ton of unintentional funny, Ninty comes through with a fun hour presentation and managed to showcase way more stuff in a fraction of the time.

Wii controlled Zelda looks extremely fun. I think the speaker in the controller was the final big secret concerning that, and it was well received. I wanna know what was behind that door though now. The new stuff in the trailer didn't look all THAT appealing, but it was different for Nintendo's traditional games, so that's a plus. Red Steel actually felt a little underwhelming to me. The gameplay was a few notches too slow (turning in particular), and some of the animations, especially the ones involving sword fights looked pretty stiff. Not fatal flaws though, it can be fixed. WiiSports seems like a good idea to grab casuals, and as usual looks very fun in practice with friends (unlike Sony's tilting Warhawk demonstration). The guy that won was kinda geeky...it should have been ME!

My greatest disappointment is Zelda being split into two versions based on control schemes. While it proves what they said earlier about no GC games having Wii control capability, it still sucks that I'll have to give the GC version the shaft after waiting SO LONG. Could at least make up for it by giving us the GC edition a couple months early though, I'd like that.... I also really wish they would have went into a little more detail concering online and how that'll all work. That and revealing the shell would have been nice. Just nitpicking there.

The graphics REALLY DO looked like a souped up GameCube though...it's hard to believe until you actually see it in motion. Only the new Mario game looked extremely impressive graphically. Zelda:TP looked better than 90% of what they showed off, so I'm betting it's just those other games are too early to give fair judgment.

Overall I'm pleased with what they had to offer. Moreso than last years E3. The DS stuff looked really awesome, as usual. No price kinda bites, but we all know it won't be costing $600 so I'm not really concerned.

If they're showing games without the secret, either it's not that important for gameplay (in which case, not big) or not related to gameplay (in which case, not big, at least for me). There might be something about the VC or some such.

All I have to say is wow. Nintendo blew me away. I want that system so badly right now it's not funny. I can't wait to see some in game footage as the conference continues. I am keeping my fingers crossed for some sign of SSB:Wii. Let's not forget the DS either, Diddy Kong Racing, Starfox, Yoshi's Island 2, Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 and Ouendan.

Best.E3.EVER.

I'm pleased, but I'm not blown away. Certainly kicked the sh*t out of Sony's conference. I want to know more about Super Mario Galaxies before I get too excited over that one, but it certainly looked like it may be devine. Two versions of Twilight Princess? I was hoping to try both styles... Metroid Prime CORRUPTION officially has the best surname ever, and huzzah for Yoshi's Island 2 and Star Fox DS, but yeah, the conference lacked that one bomb, that one game that made everyone lose control of their bodily functions. Where was Smash Bros? Where was Miyamoto's new IP? Those two things MIA were what kept the conference from being amazing. I'm still psyched as hell.

Overall, I think the presentation went very well.  I think they got their message across without dragging it out too long and boring us to death.

I'm a little disappointed that they didn't talk about the specific release date and price.  And what happened to Super Smash Brothers?  And what about the Virtual Console?

The new IPs were all right.  I'm very interested in 'Disaster'.  Hammer looks rather... dull.

Hopefully we get more info before E3 finishes.

That would be even worse.  By giving them to you at the same time there's not as much of a reason to buy the GameCube version if you're planning on buying a Wii at launch.  If they were staggered by a few months peopld would look upon that as "double-dipping" and Nintendo would take a lot of heat.

Download the trailer on the right for Red Steel.

Red Steel does an awesome job of showcasing what the Wii can do. If not for it, I think the lineup would have been notably weaker.

Prepare the torches and pitchforks...I wasn't impressed with the conference.

True it was good, and I only read about it (don't have the machine power to stream it or download it), but considering the HYPE surrounding it, everything was pretty weak...

No price, a vague release date, they didn't show off their OWN games, no SSB, no controller shell...

Could someone explain all of this to me? Like I said I only READ about it, so maybe my dissapointment lies in the fact that I didn't see it...

I checked out the Red Steel trailer and it was pretty cool.

I want to see some screens and movies for the other games though.  I didn't watch the press conference so I want to see what these other games look like.

Red Steel looks cool though because of how it plays and some of the little details.  The actual graphics I find aren't too hot.  They're good but not next-gen good.  The Wii so far looks like a Gamecube with a different controller.  That's okay I guess but I'm not paying that much for it.

I liked the presentation.  It was solid.  They still seem to be holding back tho.  I don't think Nintendo revealed everything about Connect24 yet.  I guessed a long time ago that the remote is a voip phone and while it may not be exactly that, I still think Connect24 means you'll be able to 'ring' friends when you want to play even if your buds aren't at their system.  All possible because the Wii will be always on.

Honestly I didn't expect alot about Smash Bros because, as was widely reported, the producer didn't find out that he was making the game until after E3 last year.    That isn't going to be game that's just whipped into shape ala EA in one year and thrown out into the marketplace.  This was Nintendo's best selling game this generation.   The sequel will get lots of love.

Smash's link is nice but it has only one screen per game.  That's pretty weak there Nintendo.

Communication: Wii can communicate with the Internet even when the power is turned off. This WiiConnect24 service delivers a new surprise or game update, even if users do not play with Wii. Users can connect wirelessly using IEEE 802.11b/g, or with a USB 2.0 LAN adaptor. Wii also can communicate wirelessly with Nintendo DS.

interesting......some whre wondering about that........

Other Features: Four ports for classic Nintendo GameCube controllers. Two slots for Nintendo GameCube Memory Cards. An AV Multi-output port for component, composite or S-video.

so, that means no VGA cable? shame .....

Virtual Console: Wii will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The Virtual Console also will feature a "best of" selection from Sega Genesis titles and games from the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets.

Gamespot has the trailer so I checked it out.  Pretty cool thought none of those games graphically look like they couldn't be done on the Cube.

One thing I noticed is that in Nintendo's trailer the Red Steel footage is identical to that of the Red Steel trailer but the guy controlling the game is different.  In other words he's not actually controlling the game.  He's just an actor pretending he is.  That kind of hurts it for me.  I want to see splitscreen videos of someone legitmately playing Wii games next to footage.

The amount of movement shown in the demo isn't encouraging either.  Not everyone has an empty room to work with.  Before if I could sit somewhere and see the screen I could game.  Now I have to clear floor space?  That kind of sucks.

Super Mario Galaxy at first glance looks like it would be more fun with traditional controls.  I see the footage and want to play in those areas with a Cube controller and Super Mario Sunshine controls.  I need to read some impressions because it doesn't look like the motion control is being put to any logical use.  I don't want point-and-click Mario.

It's a nice lineup overall though.  I want to know what is available at launch besides Zelda and Wii-Sports.

If you read up on it, you would find that it does control like a traditional mario for basic movement, it's just there are a lot of additional actions that use the wii-mote.

Interesting that there is no classic controller shown on the American Nintendo website, but yet otherwise the site has many of the same photos.

Wii info

IN the hardware features it only mentions the Wiimote and Nunchuk with no mention of a classic controller being included.

Ian should be happy...

MP3 impressions:
Quote

While the basic action in the demo was the standard Metroid fare, how you got on with it was all-new thanks to the Wii controller. Much like our Tokyo Game Show demo, the game relied on the main controller and nunchuk attachment. We moved Samus with the analog stick while we did our looking and aiming by simply pointing the new controller. The B button shot her primary weapon and, when held down, charged up for a power shot that sucked in nearby items. The directional pad fired missiles. Scanning was tweaked a bit with a translucent reticle coming up that you could "lock" by hitting the C button. When locked onto an enemy you'll be able to perform the same actions you always could. When locked onto an item you can scan you'll have to hold down the A button to initiate it. The Z button initiates your morph ball.

There you have it. Lock-on is still in the game.

Post by: Hostile Creation on May 09, 2006, 10:39:11 AM
And apparently lock-on and freestyle shooting can be used really seamlessly, jumping from one to the next as necessary, using the grapple beam for one enemy and your arm cannon for another.  According to IGN's impressions.

Still negative? How? What will it take for Nintendo to break your defenses?

Anyway. Not sure where to post this: I just flipped to CNN. Unexact quote: "Sony has announced that they are launching their PS3 in Novemeber, where it will compete with the Xbox 360. What's the difference between the PS3 and the Xbox 360? Well, if you wave the controller around, like you see someone doing there, the system can sense that. It'll be able to detect motion there. Sony also announced the price, it'll be $499 for the system with a 20GB harddrive, or $599 for the system with the 60GB hardrive, if you want that option. That sounds expensive, but some are speculating that Sony will be loosing alot of money, that it may cost up to $800 to produce the system. Sony's willing to do that because they really want to get systems out there. Okay, up next, we look at the stocks...."

One can only hope they're just slow on the uptake. Though, actually, this can be constured as pretty good news for Nintendo: when the only difference CNN can see between the Xbox 360 and the PS3 is the controller, you know Nintendo must be on to something....

I got that feeling as well.

It seemed like George Harrison was unprepared to give a speech and I can't help but wonder if they had him do it at the last moment because they don't want to give Sony 3-4 months to rip them off which they obviously WOULD do.

I'm going to be captain bringdown and say that I don't think there is a "bomb".  Nintendo probably has some more little secrets along the lines of teh 24-hour online thing or the speaker in the remote, but I think we know most of the important stuff.  Although if you want a glimmer of hope remember that Animal Crossing hasn't been shown, nor Super Smash Bros or any original Miyamoto title.  Maybe Nintendo is hiding some features that could be given away if one of those was shown.

My disappointments (just to get them out of the way):
- Too much Mario.  I'm stoked for Super Mario Galaxy, but then they showed off four more Mario games.  And I bet we'll hear about Mario Party 8 tomorrow.  Blech.
- Two versions of Zelda.  I was really annoyed when they delayed the GameCube version, and now I can't help but feel like Nintendo did it just to make the game into a Wii launch title.  Maybe that's not the case, but it feels underhanded.

My happies:
- Every Wii game looked like fun.  Of course I'll read reviews and pare the list down, but I wanted to play every single game they showed, even Madden, which I normally couldn't care less about.
- Nintendo has a bunch of games that should appeal to the mature audience.  Twighlight Princess, Hammer, Red Steel, Disaster, Metroid Prime 3...good work Nintendo.
- Metroid, Mario and Zelda haven't all appeared on one system at E3 since 2002.
- Miyamoto's conducting intro.  That was just so cool.  Some have complained that the show slowed down at the end, that's true, but there's always the slower, corporate part of these E3 press conferences, I think the ending was perfectly fine, it just paled in comparison to the AMAZING first half.
- Super Mario Galaxy!  I complain about the overdoing of Mario, but you can bet any time Nintendo releases an original Mario platformer, I'll be right there.  Super Paper Mario looks neat too, one thing I am happy about is that most of the Mario titles are platformers, I think the basketball game is the only one that isn't.

I didn't get to see the GameCube E3 press conference, but this is certainly the most exciting one Nintendo's had since then, and I'm convinced that Wii has the potential to knock Sony and Microsoft on their arses if Nintendo keeps this momentum up.

I very much doubt Nintendo DOES NOT have a couple aces up it's sleeve.

You remember that hardware feature....you know, the one about the console never sleeping. That's interesting, but it becomes even more interesting when coupled with the speaker and speculated microphone on the Wiimote.

Yeah, buddy, your very own gaming phone.

I went to post my big long comprehensive view of the presentation that made sense and it didn't post.  So here is the short of it.

Reggie was like a Robot.
The presentation was good but did not live to the hype so was a disappointment.
The door thing was cool.
The 2 version of TP is a disappointment.
Hope there is a headphone mode for the Wiimote where it won't make noise because its night and your using headphones.
No great secret yet.
Nothing great revealed and we were told we'll have to wait more.
No Smash.
Excite Truck looks cool and so does H.A.M.M.E.R.
Lack of VC interface info.

The whole presentation to me yelled "We know we could have put Miyamoto in a clown suit, show you a reel, and had him play tennis and we STILL be the best presentation this Pre-E3"

That link doesn't work, keeps going to a Microsoft website, even after I take out the extra http at the beginning.
Remove both.  www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/e3_2006/wii/controller.html

I've been there, I thought it was a new place to see, oh well.  Thanks just the same vudu.

There seems to be a - and + button on either side of the Home button, I guess it's to adjust the volume for just that reason.

I haven't read everything yet, but my first impressions are that putting out Zelda TP in two versions is bogus, and that Nintendo failed yet again to deliver on the hardware details, preferring to be a cocktease. Even though they have no time left to reveal the details. Bogus.

Also, the "name" issue still stinks up the joint. Oh, LOL, Reggie made a nervous pun about it. They didn't fix the name, nor do anything to make anyone happier about it. But at least now we know they won't ever do anything about it, so we can accept that it sucks and move on.

These things are dark spots on an otherwise surprisingly good E3 showing.

on the 2 versions of zelda -
i'm still not clear as to whether or not this will be two seperate games that you buy, or one game that is playable in both consoles (perhaps one box, with 2 discs).  I'm hoping the later.  If it is the later, this shouldn't be a huge surprise.  Although it would have been nicer had they released zelda or the new paper marion in the early summer to tide us over.  On the other hand, ds-lite could fill that roll.

It will be two separate games.

Ruby Onix still being a tard?
Ian talking about "true" Metroid, as if the phrase even means something?  Lock-on isn't any more true Metroid than free aiming.
Mantidor also being a tard and not realizing that you can also freestyle aim with the controller as well?  Which is clearly stated in the IGN impressions.

My disappointments?
I haven't seen Suda's game yet.
HAMMER looked kinda generic, but who's to say for sure yet.
Elebits didn't look nearly as spectacular in-game as the artwork did.  My interest has dropped significantly.
Not interested in Excitetruck, though I am interested in playing other racing games when they come out.
Two versions of Twilight Princess. . . eh.  I'm not sure which one I'll get yet.
SSBWii not shown, but I can wait for that.  Everything else has been great.

Good stuff:
Everything else.  I can't even highlight anything, it's all too awesome.
Though Super Mario Galaxy does stand out.  I really wanna see more of that.

Is there a free high-resolution video of the press conference available to download yet?

why you have to call names on me? I just thought they were going to do something different, thats all, its a new direction from what I had thought and Im waiting for more info, and also reading more hands on impressions. Seriously some of you cant hear the smallest complain, should I post strictly pant jokes to avoid all the bashing or what?

From GameSpot impressions..

Much like our Tokyo Game Show demo, the game relied on the main controller and nunchaku attachment. We moved Samus with the analog stick while we did our looking and aiming by simply pointing the new controller. The B button shot her primary weapon, and when held down, it charged up for a power shot that sucked in nearby items
Typo or true?

I was a little disapointed that Nintendo still kept the details close to them, but after sony's little innovation yesterday, I dont think I am ever going to complain about nintendo's secrecy ever again.  Still, it was a very good pre E3, and I am happy with what they did show.

YEAH!  Real Metroid Prime game!  None of this FPS crap!
I've said it before. The control scheme in no way dictates whether this will be a "real" Metroid game. In fact, my hope was that the controller would bring it closer to its 2D roots. The lock-on was necessary because it was too difficult with the GCN controls, but with the NRC, there's so much potential.

Whatever..

Well if you guys would READ THE IGN IMPRESSIONS (i can't believe i'm advertising for them) you would know that there were to types of ways to control MP3.

One of which was the "user-friendly" version that used B as the primary weapon.
