Title: Sony E3 2006 Press Conference
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on May 08, 2006, 02:41:42 PM
[L+Sony's E3 2006 Press Conference Video]http://www.gamespot.com/downloads/6149525[/L]

Was supposed to start at 4pm pst. Gamespot says it has been delayed.
Anyone know what happened? Did Sony really have nothing to show? or maybe they are a little afraid of what Nintendo has to show and would rather Nintendo show their hand 1st?

As I said in PlanetChat:  It's pretty, but dull.  There aren't really any interactive environments to speak of.  It's just a boring, static, high def backdrop surrounding a circle that you drive around in.  Nothing revolutionary to speak of.

They showed an augmented reality card game using the eye toy for PS3.  It was cool, and different from Revolution; it looks like they are still going to be using a regular game pad.  I can't tell from the angles they've shown so far.

I'm interested to see what else the camera can be used for.

They just finished pushing microtransactions.

And now they are having camera control issues in there Japanese hacknslash game.  Haha.  Earlier their speaker was all about PSP emulating a PSX game and how it brought back memories and then he couldn't control the game for ass.

I wonder if Sony is so lost in their own little world that they truly don't realize people without a 1080p TV are not going to get half the "information" or "data" they're system is generating.  I'm beginning to think HD is conspiracy created by people who need to get glasses.

You know, I don't care that Sony went gyroscopic. Really, it only proves once again that Nintendo knows what they're doing. Always have, always will. And that everyone else is just scrambling to catch up with them.

But what makes me angry is how the mood is going to shift everywhere to how this is going to be the next great gaming avenue even after spending MONTHS bashing Nintendo for bringing it to us first.

Nintendo is never going to win.

Ever.

Period.

All I can hope for is that they keep on chugging along making the great games that I love. Everyone else just be damned.

I love the internets. Watching this live with complimentary commenting on IRC, then to hit up all the forums and witness the aftermath, it's just too entertaining to me. Tomorrow has even more explosive potential....

Anyway, almost none of the Sony games caught my interest. Total cop out going back to the old stale dual shock pad (CURSE YOU D-PAD). Throwing in motion sensors was pretty much a given (and even took a dig at Ninty with their 'no external setup' comment). Outrageous price, once again a given. Just FINALLY glad to have it all set in concrete. Looking forward to the floor impressions now, since I really hope the media can play better than those guys on stage....

Gamespot says that the Europe / Aus launch will also be November 17th. For 599 Euros. What a joke. That comes to close to a grand in A$, regardless of the fact that the A$ is approximately worth 75 US cents.

I hope Nintendo doesn't screw us PAL Gamers so hard.

You're on. Get some specs that are comparable to PS3 for under $600. Go!

Typical knee jerk (wii-jerk?) reactions these days. Let's see what else Sony does with this limited motion sensing.

Yeah it was a cheap shot; let's see if Nintendo can counter.

First off, I know we all joke about Sony stealing others ideas... but I'm still floored that they had the balls to do this. I hope some media person out there grills them for this, like they deserve.

Second off, Microsoft is now screwed being the only one without the tech.

This was my response to the talkback thread but it blew up so I'll post it here.

Well this isn't too surprising.  Sounds pretty inferior to the remote.  Still implementation is what matters.  Sony's "motion control" seems like a dud but that doesn't automatically assure "victory" for Nintendo.  They still have to show some big games to prove that the Wii concept will result in better games.  Guess we'll find that out tomorrow.

Man that sounded good to say "tomorrow".

It still seems weird that Nintendo was so concerned about having their idea stolen but then revealed their idea so far ahead of time that it DID get stolen.

I think it was necessary in order to give us ample time to understand, accept, and relish the concept.

Ah, I see now that the $500 model is a gimp model, not just a smaller HDD.

The gimp version has a smaller HDD, no HDMI, memory stick, SD memory, Compact Flash, or Wi-Fi support.

So basically you need the $600 model.

Jesus H. Christ, that's arrogance. We're getting close to 3DO days again. At that price you can't even expect it to become a second console. It won't be lower than $300 for YEARS, and by the time it does you might as well not even bother and wait for the 2010 generation.

For what it's worth, Nintendo is going to make a killing as the "second system".

Edit for vudu: IGN Story on Model Differences

BigJim - confirmation of that?  I thought the only difference was the size of the HDD.  If what you say is true, what's the point of even offering the $500 model?

So you can market the system like it will sell for $500, when in fact it sells for $600... and when someone talks themself into getting a $500 console, and then finds out they need the $600 model, you can bet that they would likely be more willing to get it then had they been given the $600 price point to figure over at the start as the "must buy" one.

Why would Sony do the same mistake that Microsoft did with the Xbox 360?

I remember them commenting.  We won't release a system without the Hard Drive.  We believe our competition was ignorant to create such division within their own market.

By the way, we won't be including the power cord in our $500 version of the system.

Ha.

Seriously, The Wi-Fi support is the only thing massively missing with the cheaper price but I think that is a pretty big deal.

Title: RE: Sony E3 2006 Press Conference
Post by: BigJim on May 08, 2006, 06:52:46 PM
Yeah. The flash memory omission is sort of "eeh".  But Wi-Fi and HDMI are considerable. HD was mentioned 500 times during the presentation but you won't even be able to take full advantage of it without HDMI.

Nintendo must be feeling some vindication with these prices.
Title: RE: Sony E3 2006 Press Conference
Post by: wandering on May 08, 2006, 06:53:08 PM
I love how they opened with "PlayStation is not interested in sparkling innovations" and closed with gyro functionality.

Yeah, Sony fails. Worst E3 conference since "Pac Man vs." Only three things of interest: the price, the gyro functionality and MGS4. And only one of those things was actually positive, and it's the one thing we've already seen before.

Ah, I see now that the $500 model is a gimp model, not just a smaller HDD.

Oh man, I missed out on the Sony press conference circus, was visiting family, but it was absolutely hilarious to read the headline, and then go through these posts to see how people reacted when Sony unveiled the motion control.

This thing can't compete with the Wii remote whatsoever.  Even if it had the same degree of control, the fact that the remote can be held in one hand gives it an instant advantage.  Swinging a Dual Shock around like a sword or a tennis racket...it's just not happening.  Pathetic.

Of course, that doesn't mean the public won't like it...that would be scary.

I don't think Sony is done, not by far, but man, it's not looking that great.

Finally, go info on what the HDMI means.

So without it you can't have High Defination?

Does that mean you can upgrade the system later (Like the 360 Core System) or are you stuck without HD?
That is pretty big.  That is really quite lame of Sony.

Post by: Zach on May 08, 2006, 08:43:45 PM
Well, apparent Nintendo has something up their sleeves for tommorrow (YAY!!!).  So it might actually work for nintendo if the new thing is as big (or bigger) than the controller concept.  In that case, Reggie gets to make fun of Sony, AND gets to reveal something new that nintendo has.

I will laugh my @$$ off if Reggie makes fun of Sony (Hmm.... That conference yesterday seemed oddly familiar) and says, "Well, Sony now has also 'innovated' a controller with tilt sensors, but Wii have THIS......"

Btw I was looking at the PS3 section on the CAD forums for a good laugh, there is a thread called "Sony pulls a Wii," here are some highlights (My comments in bold)

"That with the gyro in it. Sure nintendo has it. But I don't care. It's a cool idea, and I'm glad that they stole it if they didn't think of it first because I was never gonna get a nintendo." What would this guy have said about Nintendo's idea yesterday?"

"Doesn't matter that random 14 year old on a few forums goes ZOMG THEY RIPPED OF THE WII!! What matters is that they have a feature that is cool, that is noticable, that will be well recieved, as well as it being just "another" cool feature, unlike the WII which has focused basically their entire product around it." I repeat my earlier comment

"I found the pricing to be well in line with that of the X-360... And I love the controller idea." All of the quotes so far were from the same poster, fanboys are funny
Later in that thread: "You mean the idea Nintendo had, monthes ago? Or Sony's idea to copy it?" Well Said

This point actually isnt bad, so I thought it was quote worthy "Also for all of those people complaining and throwing a fit about Sony "stealing" the motion sensor idea from nintendo.... I highly suggest you look up the history of motion sensors in controllers before you put Nintendo on a pedestal for using it. Because they certainly aren't the first by any means."

"Well, it's not like it's directly ripping off the wii controller. 1. It won't be completely like the wii-mote 2. Nintendo didn't exactly make it so that they were the only ones who could do that. Heck, Nintendo should be proud that the idea is looking good for others." Being proud is one thing, but when the competition copies you to try and push you out of business is quite another

This one is HILARIOUS "Where's your proof that it's idea stealing? I mean, it is possible that they were kicking the idea around, saw how well it was received when Nintendo did it, and went ahead and decided to implement it themselves.

I didnt include the names, but if you want, you can go over there and find them.  Also, not all of the posters were raving fanboys trying to defend sony's actions, even the posters above would later say something that made sense. There were some rational arguments for both sides.

Edit, screw up with the bold parts (begun one without closing it)

Yeah, good quotes. Sony put motion sensing in their controller for the bullet point, and nothing else. Now fanboys can say the ps3 has motion sensing too. Hooray for them.

I don't think the final secret has to be as big as the controller. In addition to the fact that the Wii controller will mop the floor with the PS3 controller, Nintendo's first party games will blow everyone away, final secert or no.

Breaking news! The PS3 has been renamed! Phil Harrison just made a special announcement from his hotel room! What's the new name? Sega Saturn 2.

ROFLMFAO

I could NEVER EVER justify buying one console that costs as much as TWO other consoles. That's what this is. The PS3 price = Xbox360 + Wii price. What does that add up to? SONY LOSES. So who really cares that Sony stole (and bastardized) Nintendo's idea? They'll be dead in two years.

I can't wait for Metroid Prime and Smash Bros trailers to hit the net tomorrow. Put that sh*t up side by side with that Warhawk demo.

MEGA-PWNED.

Nintendo better throw a f*ckin' knockout punch tomorrow. Sony's never been so vulnerable as they are right now.

More like four months ago. Beginning of January was when IGN first talked about Nintendo sending out advertisements for their conference. I can't believe it's only NINE hours away! After all the waiting I've done, it's so close I can taste it! This is better then Christmas man.

That Ken guy wasn't lying about working extra hours to buy one. People are going to have to start selling themselves if they want to come up with that kind of money in 6 months. STDs for PS3s.. doesn't seem like a fair trade.
Well, that why we package our wii(2)'s in plastic

Microsoft isn't worried about this. They know how bad of an idea motion sensing in a gamepad is, after all they pioneered that.
