This is a link to a kind of 3D display technology. The major con of this technology is that you need to be looking at the screen in a certian way. aka dead on. In the portable arena you are almost always looking at the display dead on.
Another thing is that this is a technology that because of the nature would not lend itself well to a 2 screen unit. Hence it couldn't do well as part of the DS2. Also this technology is not practical to use in TV's and for general computing.
You can turn off the feature to enable it to be a purely 2D diplay, playing older games. The prices of the computer display of these units have dropped recently and I don't beleive that the GBNext is going to be announced until nextE3 at the earliest or the one after that. Other things that I think are possible in GBNext is:
Analog Stick. Think the PSP numby only good. A total of 8 buttons. 2 shoulder, 4 action, Start select. Wireless. With Link cable emulation for older games. 1 gig carts. With the ability to use the unused space like system ram. (For decompresion) Virtual Console interoperbility.
I think these feature sets would differentiate it enough from the DS to justify there co-existance.
Plus come on true 3D display without looking stupid.

We actually discussed using the Sharp3D screens on the next gameboy back in march in this thread.
I agree, it would be a very exciting thing for Nintendo to do. Sure would blow the PSP out of the water.

All your other ideas sound good though and are very probable.

I'm glad someone else brought it up besides me, everyone seemed to think I was crazy for thinking it was a possibility.
There was actually an article in GMR magazine (March, 2004) that hinted Sharp and Nintendo were in talks about using Sharp's 3D technology "in a future portable system". At the time it was speculated that it might be used on the DS.

I'm with pale. A 3D display is a fun sparkling innovation but it doesn't really add anything to the gameplay. Not like the d-pad, shoulder buttons, analog stick, touch-screen, Wii-mote or any other landmark innovation in games. Even increased hardware power other than the obviously improved graphics allows for things like larger worlds, more activity on screen, etc... I could see a 3D display used in conjunction with VR goggles for added immersion but if we're talking just a standard screen displaying 3D, it seems pointless to me. It would certainly be "interesting" but so was the Virtual Boy.

Die. I'm not going to hurt my eyes on the daily commute just because somebody thought it would be neat.

The Sharp technology halves the horizontal resolution of the screen and halves the perceived brightness. The DS screen is already too low resolution for me. Also, another problem is that I'll want to tilt the GameBoy3D system so I can see the sides of objects, and that won't work.
How about a first person game in which you change your view angle by physically moving the system all around you? Maybe a PC style adventure game or a detective game. Use the motion sensing capabilities of the Wee Wii so it is turned into a virtual digital camera. You use it like you would use any digital camera with a live preview on the screen, but instead of capturing the real world, use are viewing a virtual world.
(when I say Wee Wii, I am talking about a portable system with Wii technology, of course)

Add to my originial list built in movement sensing and rumble. I had thought I typed those. :-P. But just improved hardware and the like doesn't make it anything that couldn't be done with DS2.

Yeah, just because 3D display isn't a sufficient innovation to be "Different" by itself doesn't mean it might not be a nice addition.
While we're on that, what about revisiting my old idea of having the controller half of the system come off so that you can not only replace a broken analog stick but also allow Nintendo to release different types of controllers for different types of games.

Anything that could be a loose and easily losable part isn't very desireable for a portable machine. Still a neat idea Jasonditz. In my opinion. That being said I liked the Virtual boy and we all know how functional that was.

I loved the Virtual Boy, I used to take mine to college and play with it in the optics lab between classes. I was all over Panic Bomber.
I think if Nintendo does go Analog stick on their next GB (Which is probably obligatory) they pretty much have to have some way for the end user to replace it when it eventually breaks/gets worn out.

I'm sure people said the same thing about sound. And color.

I think this is a brilliant idea, actually. Imagine a Wii game where you have to search for and kill invisible monsters that are hidden in your own room.
