Title: A Wii little problem
Post by: MaryJane on May 06, 2006, 03:13:03 AM
The problem i'm having with Wii right now is the same one I had with the DS. When I first saw the DS I was like HELL YES!! finally a system perfectly tailored to play RPG's... where are they? Now with Wii, although I see at as perfectly tailored to play FPS's I still think there are some cool things that can be done in the RPG segment.

Last-gen the reason I bought a PS2 was for the RPG's and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. Right now I'm playing Dragon Quest VIII, Disgea, and I was given another by my brother that i haven't played yet, tales of shadow or shadow tales, i don't feel like going to get the exact name, then there are all the ones I've already played which are too many to name.

We have heard a lot of games being mentioned for Wii, ranging in every genre, except RPG's. The DS has not had one good RPG released for it yet, and it took like 9 months or more for it to get it's first one. Where are the Wii RPG's??? I think that Final Fantasy guy said they wanted to a Crystal Chronicles for it, or maybe he was talking about the DS, but either way, I'm not really looking forward to it after the first one. I need a game I can play by myself and still have it be good. I'm probably going to buy a PS3 although that will be my secondary system, not Wii like Nintendo said it wouldn't mind people doing. But I'd prefer it if a massive amount of RPG's would be released for Wii, I really want to see how they can utilize the FHC for a game like that here are my ideas so that this isn't just a rant:

1. Action RPG: Battles would have to take place on 3d plane unlike Tales of Legendia, use the nunchuck to move character while the Wiimote would be used to quickly select targets and used like a sword or axe or gun depending on the RPG and character to attack. Spells would be button assigned on the d-pad to keep the action quick and simple. Also along the bottom of the screen not on the field but below it, would be some quick use icons, you'd be able to assign like different weapons, or healing items to them, obviously you'd just point and click with the Wiimote to use them.

2. Turn-based RPG(my favorite): I would love a deep rich battle system utilizing the Wiimote greatly and immensely complicated and rewarding. In battle, your basic attack would only require you to select your target and use the A button to confirm. Special attacks still in the physical realm(i.e not magic spells) require you to perform the action in "on" the monster. You would have attacks like assigned to vertical, horizontal, and diagonal slashes, later more powerful moves would incorporate multiple slashes, not too many as it could hard to remember, I'd say at most 3. The effect of the spell could be tied to the efficiency of the move, how accurate you were on the target, and how quickly you performed it. For spells I have about a million ideas, but the best one would probably be to use the system in Lost Magic, which was a great idea which wasn't implemented to its full potential(as a whole for the game). Again, you'd draw the rune symbols on the monster with the effect being tied to the efficiency of your drawing.

I just think there are so many things that I can't even think, of and other that I have and haven't written here that could be done to make the most brilliant RPG ever. Although I do still have some reserved doubts about the Wii, I do believe it has the incredible potential to make the best games for every genre. We've already seen how amazing FPS's and Madden will be for it, and they definitely will be the best ever of those genre's. I just hope they Revolutionize every genre the way they should.

Camelot is making an RPG.  It will be Golden Sun.  You'll see in a few days okay.

You definitely bring up a very good point.  Where are the RPGs?

Like you, I am a huge RPG fan and that reason alone is why I picked up a PS2 cause the GC's RPG lineup was simply not cutting it.  RPGs is one of the main reasons why the PS2 was successful in the first place.

I do hope we get more RPGs for the Wii than we got on the GC cause the last thing Nintendo needs is for more of their userbase to pick up PS3 to fill their need for RPGs.

RPGs are rarely released at launch for any console.

Just think about all of those RPGs on the SNES...uh, I mean virtual console, to hold you over

The virtual console is not going to hold everyone over.  Definitely not if the RPG situation is the same on the Wii as it was on the GC.

I've played practically all the RPGs on the SNES so the virtual console will not hold me and many others over.

So far:
- Final Fantasy: CC
- Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
- Camelot RPG
- Pokemon Wii
- Untitled RPG from a "well known RPG Studio"

A developer could really clean up making an American style rpg on the Wii.

Agreed. I really hope another Golden Sun game is coming soon to some platform. (DS or Wii, whatever)

Just a note on #2: the Linear Motion Battle System (the battle system used in the Tales of and Star Ocean series) has already been adapted to 3D in both Tales of Symphonia (GCN; PS2 in Japan) and Star Ocean 3 (PS2). As a big fan of Tales of Symphonia, I would certainly like more LMBS games.

Um, Star Ocean 3's battle system isn't anything like Symphonia's. Sure, they're both realtime but that's where the similarities end. In SO3 you can move freely while you're restricted to a plane in ToS, in SO3 combos are just cancelling moves into specials, etc.

Hold them over until the second phase of games for the Wii hits?  Sure it can.  As I said, RPGs are rarely ready for launch.  Obviously I'm not talking about the virtual console containing the only RPGs for the entire Wii generation, just for the initial dry spell.

I'm actually hoping that the new IP would be an honest to good traditional RPG from the mind of Miyomato.  I think that be great.  Though I know it be a let down for everyone else.  (No Legend of Zelda is as much an RPG as Metriod Prime is a First Person Shooter, probably even less.)

Also what was Sega smoking when Phatasy Star Universe isn't coming for the GCN.  Come ON.  Lets put all of the PSO titles on a console as the sole online game and not give it the epic RPG...  Sheesh...

Never happening

KDR_11k: Okay, I admittedly have only played SO3 for a couple multiplayer battles. In Tales of Symphonia, you can move around by hitting up or down. You can get to anywhere within the battle field, but the movement is like you are permanently z-targetting an enemy.

Ceric: I guess Phantasy Star Universe could be done as a shell game. I was thinking that if it was not a shell game, then its online play might be difficult to balance because the abilities of the controllers on the different platforms would have to be considered.

IceCold: Unforunately, you're right.

Zelda is Miyamoto's take on RPGs, methinks. If you want anything closer...why would you want anything closer? Miyamoto isn't about creating games with pointless stat upping and all that.

Anyway. 2 rpgs at launch. Happy now, Mary Jane?

You're right: the DS has had surprisingly few RPGs...
