Title: Some consolidation Please! E3 Planning.
Post by: Ceric on May 03, 2006, 12:11:41 PM
I am well aware of the irony of a topic that asks for the consolidation of topics.  But if it's this bad now think of what it will be at E3.  I think it be in all of ours remaining sanities best interest to decide now how we want to split things up.  I suggest doing a thread for Console Hardware Specific Announcements, A General Impressions Thread, A Announced Titles and Developers Thread (Just titles and developers no discussion), A Announced Titles Discussion Thread, Announced Developers Discussion Thread, a  Virtual Console/Online Thread (Lets face it they have to announce something in this regards), and The Chat Throughout E3 Thread (Anything can go here but needs to be siphoned to the other threads).  That's my idea.

Also what day and time is the Nintendo presentation going to start?  Are we chatting or flooding the forum?  Timezone to please (I'm in Central)

I think it's May 9th at 6:30 p.m. (Eastern)

I agree that some sort of organization is needed.

Mods! We need your help!

Could you please make sticky's of these topics as follows (thanks to ceric):

-E3 discussion (sort of like TGS, but I'm sure it's going to be a hell of alot crazy)
-Hardware (Remote, nunchuck, wifi -- whatever)
-Games
-Developers
-Impressions

That will about do it...

Maybe within each thread, someone could maticulously gather all the link's and update the first post.....then again, maybe not

One thing I typically don't like about consolidated threads is often they're TOO consolidated and you end up having like 20 topics that could easily be their own thread squished into one.  I might want to talk about one game that is revealed but have to cycle through pages unrelated to it to see if anyone else is talking about it.  Or discussion of the game just doesn't exist because the consolidated thread has focused on something different.

We don't need duplicate topics but if a new game is annouced we should be allowed to create ONE seperate topic for it.  Consolidating is not a bad idea in theory but is has to be done right.

Same here KnowNothing same here.*pats back*

Ian you do have a good point.  But I personally believe that there will be so much to talk about.  After the fact we can talk about all these things and hopefully have ourselves enough meat to last for months in a desert.

There just need 1 100 post a min thread that will be the breaking new thread and wowing thread, that break of to a new thread for mawiio128, SSBO, MPwii and any other really big games each, and a 2 bitching/loving thread about rev last secret being great/sparkling innovation and how the name did/didn't get fixed, and maybe a OMG game boy (cube/qooq/GBASPmicroDX) thread. Anymore will mess forum up with people cross posting the same thing.

Am I mistaken thinking there is usually an E3 forum that pops up this time of the year?  I could have sworn I remembered that.  I think it would help this situation a ton.  It allows for multiple threads, while keeping them all together and away from taking over the rest of the forum.

Point for MattVDB

Edit:  Actually expanding on the Idea a little.  Why don't we have the E3 forum be reply only.  We'll put each one of the general categories mentioned and then the Uber Powerful Admins will post a thread for each game announced.  This way every game will have a clear cut category.   General opinon will have one.  So on so forth.  Since it would be managed by the PGC Collective it would almost insure there would be no Multiple threads on the same topic.  Each game would be there and if the PGC folks, Who are at E3, are just so blown away by something they can make a thread on it.  In my head this seems like an elegant solution.  In fact there can also be some pre-work done with the categories we alread know and the games we already know.

This should technically be in the PGC Discussion Board, but anyway..

Which mod isn't going to E3 and is free during that time?

2 Points IceCold.

Actually your right it should probably be in the Discussion board.  I typed before I thought.  This area was getting messy so it was to point that out a little too.

So all of the Mods are going to E3?  I didn't realize.   But on the flipside if I got a job as a Mod I get to go to E3?

I figured someone was going to stay behind and maintain the site.  Sort of a central contact for all the E3 agents.

No, I don't think they are all going to E3. However, I assume it would be difficult to find someone who isn't going and is also free on that day to do all the duties..

There will be a thread for the initial press conference, which'll contain all of our intitial reactions. Then, there will be seperate threads on each thing of interest (Mario 128, Mario Paint Wii, Kid Icarus DS etc.) in both the relevant system sections and in Talkback.

It's not a perfect system, but it works.

As for the ideas in this thread, I think a seperate E3 section would be nice, and agree with Ian that consolidated threads aren't the best.

I vote PGC change the rules for E3 and enforce a one post per five minute rule.  This will make people think about what they're actually saying and not just jump in with a bunch of crap that's already been said/asked ten times before and will have no significance thirty minutes later.

And make people's posts annoyingly long and exhausting.  Keep it the way it's always been...I don't think it will be a problem.  I.  Really.  Don't.

History has proved otherwise.

Do you remember Iwata's GDC speech?  It was pretty hard trying to sort through all the crap in the threads the next day.  Last E3 was even worse.  It was nearly impossible to figure out what was worth reading and what wasn't a couple days later.  We wind up having to sort through hundreds of posts that contain no pertinent information/opinion after an hour has passed.

If I remember correctly there were over 100 posts within a couple hours before Nintendo's press conference last year with people just posting "58 minutes", "I wonder what new information we'll get", "57 minutes", "Reggie will pwn you", "56 minutes", etc.

EDIT:  Here's the GDC Iwataton Speech Thread.  Check out anywhere from posts 40 through 160.  There's really nothing in there worth reading if you weren't following along at the time.  Going back the next day is pointless because everything that's said there is either obsolete or much better written in other threads.  Any well thought-out posts are completely lost in all the muck.

I don't mind restrictions running up to the show...but afterwards, we should be as democratic as possible.  As I remember, people would start threads on certain topics during and after the show, and people would at the very least be able to distinguish which thread their comment should go to.

If their admin knows anything about gaming, I'm sure they do,  they must be kissing there budget and week good-bye.  That's going to be a ton of bandwidth and strain.  I would hate to have that position.  Does anyone know if they are just doing Nintendos or if their doing Sony's and MS too?
