Title: Speculation: Wii logo movie reveals final secret
Post by: Strell on May 01, 2006, 10:29:53 PM
I don't really subscribe to the idea that all the supposed 3D stuff is real, but if there's one thing I know about Nintendo, its that they always give clues that almost exactly tell us what they are up to.  Miyamoto talking about how he wanted to player to pull the level like Link, or Silicon Knights saying "Gosh we'd sure luv to play with Metal Gear Solid."  Even Miyamoto calling the Wiimote "the big gun" wasn't too far off.

Also, this theory has more or less been said in other respects.  I'm hardly adding anything new.

So I'm thinking about the Wii logo...and it has a lot of 3D space to it with the dancing i's.  For example, the bullets fly at you, then fly back at the i.  Then four i's are playing essentially pong with each other.

Then there's this really odd "twisting" of the i that I haven't really figured out...

But anyway, speculation.  What "gives it away" to me is the four i's playing pong with each other.

Let's assume you had four players, each with a Wiimote.  They are playing the new Mario Tennis.  The idea I'm envisioning is that the gameplay takes place in two different universes.  1) You play on the regular television, no big deal.  But 2) You play in real world space with others via the Wiimote.  So maybe you and your partner are playing, and all of a sudden the game goes in "real" mode, and you start hitting the ball towards each other in real time.  In other words, it's out of the television at this point. So you can bounce the ball off a table if you want, or maybe you have to volley it the entire time in a hacky-sac sort of thing.

The catch would be that the Wiimote physically interacts with the game world/objects.  So an enemy appears and you thrust the Wiimote into them.  Perhaps there's a way it looks like an actual sword (though I cannot imagine that is possible).  Or you hit the ball with the remote.  Whatever.

I keep trying to think about all the odd rumors we've seen in the past.  Nintendo supposedly experimented with 3D real time displays at E3 2-3 years ago.  Then there was IGN's cryptic remark about "seeing the sensor bar only sometimes."

So maybe games are jumping from 2D to full 3D space.

I'm trying to think of how this could be utilized for various genres, but honestly my head hurts enough as is.

Do I think this is it?  No.  Do I want it to be this?  Hard to say.  There's no way for us to know if it would work well or not.  I'm excited enough about the way the Wiimote works.  I'm fairly sure my head would melt if there's all of a sudden some sort of 3D-on-steriods stuff.

//just sayin'

I think we've discussed this before, way back. Anyway, what you're describing, seems impossible to me.

I'm thinking there could be a 3d representation of your hand/sword/gun that hovers pretty close to you, and moves the way the way the wiimote moves. That way, you could still stab enemies all 3-dimensional like, have blood splatter in your face, and all that.

Although what I think is more likely is that you'd have 3-d that only goes towards the screen, not away from it. What I mean is, the tv screen would look like a window. You'd have depth-perception, but not things popping out at you.

Then there was IGN's cryptic remark about "seeing the sensor bar only sometimes."

I doubt that has anything to do with 3d. I think they've said that certain games don't need the precise pointing that the sensor bar provides.

That would be AWESOME, but how on earth could it be done? You'd have to be looking at the screen to know where the ball is unless a hologram appears in your living room.

Hmmm... playing a 4 player game of Wii tennis where the other two players are on the other side of the screen, or "inside" the screen? Maybe one Wii will be able to play on more than one TV? Wireless TV connection? Say you're downstairs with the Wii, the wireless signal of it could connect to the upstairs TV as well, and all the person upstairs has to do is turn their TV on the video/Wii channel and pick up the remote to have a whack with the player downstairs whenever they want.

EDIT: Or you coudl put two TV's back to back, one person (or two) on each side, and the TV just acts as a visual aid for what's going on, which you respond to around you. Though that would require more sensor bars for each TV, but i'm still not sure how they even work.

Maybe we wont need a TV at all? Maybe it'll come with screens? Something else? Miyamoto has been quoted saying something like "in the future i hope to bring down the barrier of needing a TV and letting people play games anywhere".

Overall I think it wont be something as big as this because I don't see how it's feasable at the current time.

I dunno. I'm not convinced myself of this sort of thing. It just doesn't seem entirely possible without a headset of some kind.

In any case, it's labeled speculation, and we've got like 8 days to sweat until then.

I shudder to think of the mental fatigue I'm going to be under during these 192 hours.

Portability is plausible. Nintendo keeps making enphasis that the console is going to be low in energy consuption, and thats the only logical reason for having a low energy consuption, or are japanese concerned about their electric bills going up because of the next gen consoles? Seems too wacky, its Japan afterall though.

To me, it seems we could be on the verge of Virtual Reality, which could be close to what you are describing.  We don't need the TV, just the goggles and a open room.  Then wii actually play the game out for real.  How would they do it and make it cost effective though?

Pro makes a compelling 3 word argument.

I think we're over-analyzing this.

I'd just advise that no one sets themselves up for disappointment.

I think the two "i" represents one item neutralizing another item, that one item being a anti-gravity device and the other being gravity. That is why the Wiimote will have true force feedback

I thought the big secret was gonna be non-gameplay related

I think the final secret is revealed in the video but it's nothing like that.
It's all the interaction between the i's. I think Nintendo has created some new spin of online play. The technical aspects of online play have already been exploited but a creative new approach to it that would allow for more mainstream appeal and real interaction with real friends or potential friends could be a big deal. Basically, I think Nintendo could reveal the online game console equal to something like "My Space". "My Space" has become such a hit not because it technically did anything special, just created a more simplistic format which appealed to a wider audience and allowed for people to actually learn something about people they talk to online as opposed to just exchanging meaningless words with complete strangers.

Imagine if you could simply switch on the Wii-mote and with a few simple motions could bring up a list of local gamers (find out if your neighbors have Wii), gamers world-wide with similar interest, and previous opponents with a status marker indicating whether they're willing to play. You could bring up a profile with their stats and a list of games they own. There could even be a few built into the console like the ping-pong title. Because this is Nintendo it would be much more limited than My Space with actual messenge sending being limited only after someone accepts a friends invitation.

This would also make more sense of the "we".

I agree that there may likely be much more to the Wifi setup here than we realize but you have to consider that anonymity is very important.  Nintendo has already stated they don't wan't 8 year olds going online and getting cursed out, stalked, etc, ala xbox.  There is a reason DS online games are the way they are, and I kind of like that.  If only they connected faster...

i interpereted it as how you would 'twist' the controller to do things in-game. i guess Nintendo wanting the i's to represent people and the controllers worked because i thought of the revmote twisting, not the lil i-guy turning to call his buddies.

Maybe it will be what Demasked was all about with Warp Pipe.  That seemed to hinting at the whole Myspace aspect of community.
