Title: PS3 Shortage?
Post by: Zach on April 30, 2006, 10:29:47 AM
So I was in The Arundel Mills Mall yesterday (that is a major mall, and its VERY big, right in between DC and Baltimore) Anyway, I stopped in the gamestop and I overheard a conversation that peaked my interest.
A customer was asking about the xbox 360, and the PS3, and the employee actually seemed pretty knowlegeable (perhaps just because the person didnt ask about the GC or Wii). Anyway, when the customer asked about the PS3, and pre-orders, the worker said that Sony wasnt going to ship a lot of units (he might have said about half a million, but Im not sure) and they might not even do pre-orders because they'll only get about 3 or 4. Keep in mind this is the gamestop in a major mall, if they are only getting 3 or 4 PS3s than I wonder how many units will be going to smaller places.

This person, was of course, making an educated guess keeping in mind Microsoft's troubles.
Sony has gone on record that they intend to ship 1 million PS3's each month, with an extra million the first month, so that between the November launch and March 2007 there will be 6 million PS3's worldwide.

Never trust a Gamestop employee, nuff said. Just the other day I had one tell me how the Revolution (Wii not widespread yet, thankfully) was going to play all previous Nintendo and Sega systems, naming off things like the Dreamcast.

As a Senior Game Advisor at at GameStop around here I take a bit of offense to tihs. It seriously depends on which ones you go to. And that's, nuff said.

It has been my experience at all GameStop and EB locations. If there are some out there that go against this norm, then there are, but I no longer take the time to put much faith in anything said by them going from past conversations. Furthermore, I certainly would never take something they said as fact if there weren't sources on the internet I could find to back up their claim, nor do I want to go through the effort of searching out each one of their bogus tidpits.

yeah, I know that a lot of times the GameStop employees do BS, but the guy was talking about other stuff, and seemed knowledgable. I didnt really expect this to be taken too seriously, and I certainly havent taken it as fact (Nobody should) I just thought it was interesting, so I posted it too let you guys say what you think.

Couldn't speak to the knowledge of EB/Gamestop employees, but I would donate vital organs if they met their 2 million/November unit claim.
The system seems too complex and expensive to pull off what would essentially be the largest high-end consumer electronic product launch of all time. I'm slightly pessimistic.

I feel the same, the PS3 will have a hard time if it launched this holiday, I doubt sony has enough resources to mass produced such an expensive unit in time to meet demand, and I doubt your average Joe could afford one on a weekly salary, seriously sony's screwed at this rate.

How would a gamestop employee know how many units Sony is going to ship when for all we know they haven't even started making them?

I would not be surprised if Sony screws up their launch, in fact I expect it.

We can't say for sure, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say the PS3 launch will be a lot like the X360 launch. Rushed and horrible. The software might be there, but I think everyone knows the launch PS3 units will explode within minutes after play.

I believe I said this once a while back, but it bears repeating: A store is only as good as its employees with at the bare minumum, competent management.
I frequented some Gamestops (and EB) where the staff was pretty cool. Others were damn near hostile. Some seem to have a high turnover rate as well...
On topic, I'd be cautious with what they're saying. I remember I was at a EB waiting for service, when the sales clerk was convincing a buyer to buy a core 360 since they were out of the premiumum ones. He spouted how the hard drives would be sold individually, and that bigger capacity drives would come later this year. Yet he spouted this as fact. So far, Microsoft hasn't made an official announcement... How'd this guy know?
So yeah, watch those pre-order deals. Who knows, maybe Sony will have a preferred retailer like Microsoft did; you might get a better chance to get it there.

The only bit I doubt is the "no preorders" part. These stores love to sell you farmland on the moon. A preorder is a commitment and if they make people understand that more useless crap preordered=higher priority when the crap ships they make lots of money.

Amen, KDR!
Will Sony have problems? I don't know, I mean the company has been working on the system for quite a while. I get the feeling it's a lot further along at this point than Xbox 360 was a year ago. When 360 was first being shown, a lot of the games looked so-so, and most of the software seemed to still be early on in development. PS3 stuff seems to have been in development for a year already, maybe longer...however, Sony is trying to pull of a couple of new technologies, so a shortage is definitely possible. Especially with Sony being the the current market leader.

Does Sony have any chance of stealing this show from Nintendo? I cannot imagine anything more spectacular on the Ps3 or Xbox360 when compared to the buzz about Wii

Maybe if Sony announces the Movo-Duo: the new official PS3 controller that can be split in 2 for dual motion control. And also Super Smash Sisters: an online-enabled launch game where you duke it out with scantily-clad chicks.

I don't know, I think the next GTA could make larger waves depending on what would be revealed.

Hey, feel like bringing this back up again, but I was at another forum, and I was surprised to find that somebody in Washington state had heard the very same rumour:
Quote my boss just informed me that he heard a rumor from the guys at gamestop and eb in our area that ps3 will not be done with preorders and there will only be 2 million at launch for the entire world....
which means that our store would only get 1 or 2...."
So either this is an amazing coincidence, or the computers at all the GameStops are wrong, OR this rumour might have some merit after all.
Edit: IVE BEEN BRAINWASHED, FOR SOME REASON I TYPED THE WORD RUMOR THE WAY THE BRITISH DO!!!!
GET OUT OF MY HEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAD!!!!!!!!!

People paid like $2000 for PS2s on Ebay when they launched, nobody should believe that a $600 price tag is going to dampen PS3s launch. It might harm it in the long run, though.
